Collectible Entertainment Spotlight

Aliens Fire and Stone Comic Set 1.1

Aliens Fire and Stone Comic Set Front Covers

Aliens: Fire and Stone is an entry into Dark Horse’s crossover event named “Fire and Stone”. The storyline follows Derrick Russell, a terraforming engineer, as he desperately leads a group of survivors in a heavily improvised escape plan from their doomed colony. The Aliens franchise is a favorite for the staff at Collectible Entertainment, so this great escape that launches the series is already a big draw for us. What follows is a continued battle for survival with many things going wrong. The overarching intrigue of the Fire and Stone plot eventually makes its way into the narrative. The best part of this series for us is the constant Xenomorph action. They are an active threat throughout the majority of story, and the sequences with them are well written and drawn.

The art style is unique. Patric Reynolds’ art heavily leans into the usage of shading and shadows. Every panel shows off this skill. Reynolds also has to ability to produce art that, at first glance, is on the more modest side, but when examined, is actually heavily detailed. What jumped out at us was his depiction of the Xenomorphs. They are highly detailed and a great representation of the horrific space creature. A runner-up is the facial expressions shown by the characters. The negative emotions of fear, anger, and others are especially life-like, almost to a disturbing extent.

Overall, this series is highly recommended for any Aliens fan. Considering that the separate Fire and Stone stories are not chronologically ordered, but more or less happening all at the same time, this can be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

Infinite Worlds Hardcover 1.1

Infinite Worlds Front Cover

“Infinite Worlds: The Fantastic Visions of Science Fiction Art” is a gorgeous hardcover that contains dozens of beautiful art pieces. The book is a compilation of the works of some of the greatest Science Fiction artists. Accompanying the artwork is commentary about the artists and pieces. The presentation is very clean, with a dust jacket and detailed, pristine book underneath. If you’re a science fiction fan, you’ll find it quite difficult to be unimpressed with this book.

The artwork excitement begins before you even open the book. The dust jack front cover by Paul Lehr is nothing short of impressive. Removing the dust jacket reveals a slick hardcover with an interesting science-fiction scene on the front and back covers. These initial impressions stay up to par throughout the remainder of the book. With big names like Frank Frazetta, Wayne Barlowe, Jim Burns, Boris Vallejo, and so many more, there is no shortage of excellent content. Not to mention that with 20+ artists on board, you also get an incredibly varied amount of art styles, genres, and scenery.

Overall, this hardcover is highly recommended for science fiction fans. There are a lot of recognizable names associated with this book and, weighing in at 300+ pages, it comes at an affordable price (typically, art books like these are expensive).

Evil Dead 2 Revenge of the Martians Comic w/ Variant 1.1

Evil Dead 2 Revenge of the Martians Front Covers

Evil Dead 2: Revenge of the Martians is the third entry in Space Goat’s “Evil Dead 2: Revenge of…” series. From Dracula, to Adolf Hitler, and now to Martians; Ash is always getting into trouble with forces beyond our comprehension. These “Revenge of” entries into the Evil Dead 2 franchise are excellent reads, perfect for quick, bite-sized Ash Williams experiences. This comic is a crossover between Evil Dead and H.G. Wells “War of the Worlds” and does not disappoint in delivering incredible sci-fi action. The story is nice and simple, there’s no need for anything overly complex here. Just a classic tale of Ash Williams getting in over his head with a new foe.

The art is great for a one-shot story. Eduardo Vienna draws a good Ash, complete with silly facial expressions and the bloodthirst in his eyes. It is thrilling to see the monstrous Tripods from War of the Worlds given the modern, full-color treatment. The sequence near the beginning where Ash is trying to outrun one in his vehicle is a great representation of this top-tier artwork. The goofy alien creature that plagues Ash throughout the story is another design that we enjoyed. It is drawn in a way that is strangely familiar, but we weren’t able to put a finger on what it resembles.

Overall, this comic will appeal to a lot of different collectors. Evil Dead, H.G. Wells, War of the Worlds, and Science Fiction fans will all enjoy this.

Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back Pop-Up Hardcover 1.1

Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back Pop-Up Front Cover

Get ready for another spin on one of the greatest movies of all time! There are many iterations of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and we’re here to show you yet another one. This hardcover is a pop-up book, meaning the artwork literally comes out of the pages as you read. The plot of Episode 4 is quite simplified here, but that fits in well with the main goal of enjoying the special artwork. The most memorable scenes are captured here, with a lot of the best characters, battlegrounds, and spaceships all making appearances.

Being a pop-up book, the artwork is charmingly simplistic. There is great attention to detail in the primary object of each panel, but in typical pop-up fashion, the backgrounds are more on the plain side. A lot of the pages feature a pull-out tab that causes the movement of different characters/ships throughout the story. This adds to the enjoyment of the experience as it gives the reader a part to play.

Overall, this is an excellent addition to any Star Wars fan’s collection. Empire Strikes Back fans will specifically be interested in this little piece of Star Wars history.

Blade Runner Movie Adaptation Comic Set 1.1

Blade Runner Movie Adaptation Comic Set Front Covers

The Blade Runner Marvel Comic Set is an adaptation of the 1982 science fiction film. The comics are set in a dystopian, future Los Angeles in the year 2019 (a distant future when the movie and these comics were first published) where technology has advanced to the point of creating bio-engineered androids called “replicants. Rick Deckard, the protagonist, is a “Blade Runner” tasked with hunting down and “retiring” (essentially killing) replicants that have escaped from off-world colonies and returned to Earth illegally. These replicants are physically indistinguishable from humans, but are superior in strength and agility. The story dives deep into philosophical questions regarding identity, humanity, and artificial life. These are all quite thought provoking and lend to creating a plot that it is easy to get invested into.

The iconic visual style from the movie is well represented here in the comics. It has dark and rainy streets, neon lights, and towering skyscrapers that create a unique and immersive enviroment. Al Williamson has truly outdone himself in recreating the dark atmosphere from the movie. The art style is a good representation of the 80s, where they were beginning to create heavily detailed panels and using more complex linework to illustrate the characters.

Overall, this comic set is for Blade Runner and Science Fiction fans. It is an excellent adaptation of the source material and the sci-fi artwork provides a great viewing experience.
