BlueWater Comics presents in the Ray Harryhausen Signature Series… 20 Million Miles More, a sequel to the 1957 film 20 Million Miles to Earth, which is notable for Harryhausen’s famous brand of stop-motion clay animation. The comic picks up the tale of the movie’s monster, a Venusian creature called a Ymir, and brings the story into the modern day. Several plot threads are going on here: we have a research team that investigates the history of the Ymir (apparently, they have been on Earth before 1957), an American teenager who seems to get infected with Ymir DNA, and, somehow related, a young girl with precognitive gifts locked up in a government safehouse. How these plot threads will run together is sure to stir the imagination in a way that Harryhausen’s groundbreaking work in cinema did decades ago.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Darwin Blinked”, It’s been 50 years since the strange being from Venus rampaged through Italy. So it has been 50 years of secrets, misinformation, and outright lying. Once the world was convinced that the Ymir was a giant hoax and the mission to Venus never happened, it was lulled back to sleep, ignorant of the truth. But no one counted on genetics. Years of secret testing and breakthroughs in many of the gray areas of science created unintended consequences that could bring the Earth to its knees… and only an 11-year-old child can save it.
Includes Variant issue of #1 featuring cover art by Randy Queen. Awesome!
Next in issue #2, “An Elegy for Orpheus”, The beast is loose in the City of Angels. It rampages from street to street, destroying some of L.A.’s most treasured landmarks that lay in its path. But as it smashes through the city many questions arise. What does it want? Where does it come from? Can anything stop it? But the biggest question of all: Is the world ready to learn the secrets of the Ymir? The highly classified scientific cabal of the military stands ready to catch the monster and prevent its most precious secret from leaking out at all costs. But is the genie already out of the bottle?
Next in issue #3, “Project 5”, With the Ymir recaptured after its citywide rampage, the depths of Project Five’s murky tendrils are revealed, and the answers go back more than five decades. Fifty years of doubt, guilt, and anguish weigh heavy on former astronaut Bob Calder, as he is forced to confront ghosts from the past and enemies of the present. And as bizarre as his life has become since his granddaughter’s horrid transformation into a Ymir monster, it’s about to take another dark twist.
Finally in issue #4, “Burning like a Silver Flame”, To the naked eye, Venus is a bright pinpoint of light in the morning sky. Twenty million miles closer, the enigmatic planet is hidden beneath a thick cloud layer obscuring deadly secrets shrouded in mystery for millennia. In this final chapter of the Ray Harryhausen-inspired epic, man returns to Venus for the first time in 50 years. What awaits them is something as deadly as it is astonishing. What they find will change the future of humanity as they pierce the veil of secrecy that blankets the planet.
