Adventure Time is an American animated television series created by Pendleton Ward for Cartoon Network. It follows the adventures of a boy named Finn and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake – a dog with the magical power to change shape and size at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, where they interact with Princess Bubblegum, the Ice King, Marceline the Vampire Queen, BMO, and others. After a short became a viral hit on the Internet, Cartoon Network commissioned a full-length series, which previewed on March 11, 2010, and officially premiered on April 5, 2010. Adventure Time’s success has led to various forms of licensed merchandise, including books, video games, clothing, and so much more!
Join best pals Jake the Dog, Finn the Human, and… The Ice King?! It’s a Dungeon Broventure as this crazy trio jumps into a game of danger of feelings! Will the treasure at the end be worth all the crazy emotions, or have Finn and Jake finally found a quest they won’t be able to finish?
Stories/Spoilers
In part #1, Finn and Jake (in Jakesuit) jump in front of a large group of princesses and are hit by a spell cast by Magic Man.
Five minutes earlier, the princesses of Ooo are gathered at the Princess Tea Party. The princesses converse, and Lumpy Space Princess tells a few of them about how Melissa has been arguing with her lately. She asks them if they have friends they love but can’t stand to be around sometimes, and a voice off panel tells her they know just how she feels. The voice turns out to be Magic Man. Princess Bubblegum asks him what he wants, and tells him to find another tea party to crash. He sees the word crash as an inspiration for a spell and starts to cast one. He summons a herd of Ancient Psychic Tandem War Elephants, and they storm through the party.
On a nearby hill, Finn questions Jake about why they were not allowed into the party. Jake tells him that he knows the rules, princesses only. They continue to talk until they see the elephants. Finn is confused, as he believed the only Ancient Psychic Tandem War Elephant in existence was set free by them to explore the world and his emotions. Jake notices that the location of the tea party is on fire. To get there faster, Jakesuit is used.
Back at the party, Princess Bubblegum continues to scold Magic Man, as Water Princess attempts to put out the fires. Magic Man then casts a spell to stop Water Princess’ powers, as Lumpy Space Princess rants about how he burnt her lumps. Finding her voice annoying, Magic Man casts a spell to remove it, but Finn and Jake jump in the way, the spell hitting them instead. Magic Man leaves and the princesses rush to Finn and Jake. After seeing that they are still alive, Finn and Jake attempt to speak. The Princesses are shocked to discover that the spell was real. However, they soon discovered that they can still speak through the use of emoticons. The princess tell Finn and Jake to go home and rest while they devise a plan to get Magic Man to restore their voices.
At the Tree Fort, BMO is excited that they are speaking in pictures, as he is the best at emoticons. The trio make sandwiches, and practice fighting a dummy dressed up as Magic Man. Princess Bubblegum calls Finn and Jake through BMO, and tells them they have created a plan and to meet them back at the High Tea ceremony. They arrive and tell them the directions to Magic Man’s house.
At Magic Man’s house, the princesses tell Finn and Jake their plan to use each princess’s skill set to set traps for Magic Man. However, he overhears and threatens to sell Finn and Jake’s voices to jerks that will get them in trouble if they don’t leave. Lumpy Space Princess comes up with a new plan, and the group leaves to discuss it.
Sometime later, Magic Man is reading in his house when Bubblegum calls him outside to meet the new “friends” they brought with them. To Magic Man’s surprise, the “friends” they brought are actually “kick-butt weapons and junk.” Magic Man casts a spell to turn the weapons into snakes but, to his amazement, fails. It is revealed that Finn, Jake, and Muscle Princess are on his roof, and the large group of armored princesses are actually a thought being “spoken” by Finn and Jake. PB tells the fake Wildberry Princess to use her Wildberry Punch (shooting a rocket propelled bomb shaped like a berry) on Magic Man’s house. At the same time, Muscle Princess punches a hole in his roof. In fear of his house being destroyed, he gives Finn and Jake their voices back. Princess Bubblegum tells Magic Man that she hoped he learned a lesson, but he tells her that all he learned was a new way to deceive people. Finn and Jake thank the princesses as they go to the Candy Kingdom for free snacks.
Later that evening, Finn and Jake are at home and ready to go to sleep. After Finn blows out the candle, Jake calls out for him. He speaks a picture of a heart, and Finn does one back, revealing they can still speak with images.
Next in part #2, Ice King has kidnapped Lumpy Space Princess, and now Finn and Jake are fighting him in his giant Gunter ice mech. They defeat him when he distracts himself by monologuing about how clever he is. Ice King doesn’t really care though, as Lumpy Space Princess is his least favorite princess. They break Lumpy Space Princess out of her cell and she calls them “true ultimate heroes.” This causes a trapdoor to open, and Finn, Jake, and Ice King fall into a dungeon designed to test heroes. Ice King suddenly remembers that he and Hunson Abadeer built it as part of some master plan and that there are prizes at the end.
Ice King tells Finn and Jake they can come with him, and they are shocked that he considers himself a hero since he constantly kidnaps princesses. Ice King explains that he “rescues” princesses from the loneliness and boredom of royalty. This causes Finn to consider Ice King’s point of view. However, Jake brings up Princess Monster Wife, but Ice King points out that they made her feel so bad she left forever. This causes Finn and Jake to feel sad but Ice King tells them to forget it and they go to explore the dungeon. After getting flashlights from Finn’s backpack, they come across the “Hall of Just Ice,” and when they enter it a monster-shaped sculpture Ice King made falls on top of them.
As they travel further into the dungeon, they eventually come across a chamber with three eyebabes, monster eyeballs that shoot ice at their enemies. Jake distracts them, and Finn is able to cut them in half. Then it is revealed that the eyebabes were the heralds of a giant Ice Queen. Finn and Jake are shocked that Ice King made a female version of himself, and he exclaims he doesn’t know and he was going through stuff with his relationships when he built this dungeon. Ice Queen is happy to see Ice King but rebuffs him when she remembers he abandoned her. Ice Queen prepares to stomp Finn and Jake, but Ice King flies through her chest, causing her to break into pieces. This frees an old lady Ice King used to power Ice Queen’s “secondary regality processor.”
As they continue through the dungeon, Finn points out that Ice King doesn’t remember much about the dungeon. Ice King explains that as you get older, you begin to lose precious old memories in order to make room for new ones. This depresses Finn and Jake. Finn asks why he doesn’t just write them down, and Ice King explains he has rooms full of books that he doesn’t understand why he wrote in the first place.
They eventually come across a patch of clear ice but don’t see any treasure underneath it. As they continue along, the panel expands to reveal that there is treasure under the ice and that it’s being guarded by a horrible sea monster.
Next in part #3, Ice King uses his ice powers to make the ice clearer so they can see what’s below them, and Fisho the Colossal, the Ice Dungeon boss, bursts out of the ice and attacks them. Finn and Ice King defeat the monster (the injuries causes her guts to shower onto Finn twice), and she explodes.
Remembering that water bosses always hide their treasure underwater, Jake turns into a submarine and takes Finn and Ice King underwater to get the treasure. They find a chest that has a picture of Simon Petrikov and Betty that causes Ice King’s eyes to water in joy. He explains to Jake that it’s the kind of treasure you can’t take with you, but you know you can always come back to it.
They leave Ice King’s dungeon and enter Hunson Abadeer’s dungeon. As they enter it, they find Peppermint Butler carving an inscription on the inside of a hollow tree. They think it’s an incomplete story and carve in their own edits to it.
As they progress through the dungeon, they find the enemies really easy to dispatch, tossing them into a pile of bugs. They form a fist and knock them into a trap door, and they are attacked by the monster Hook Crook, who beats both Ice King and Jake. Finn prepares for battle to fight Hook Crook alone, leaving the issue on a cliffhanger.
But before the issue ends, we see that the picture of Simon and Betty at what appears to be a wedding has a quote from Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem In Memoriam A.H.H. on the back: “Behold, we know not anything; I can but trust that good shall fall. At last – far off – at last, to all. And every winter change to spring. So runs my dreams: but what am I?”
Next in part #4, Finn begins his battle with Hook Crook and tries to cut off its legs, which re-attach to its body. Finn attempts to revive Jake and Ice King to no avail, but is able to make Ice King’s body freeze Hook Crook solid. Finn resuscitates Jake and Ice King and then breaks Hook Crook into pieces. They find Hunson Abadeer’s treasures among the ice shards and all they find in it a basket of fries. Disappointed, they close the chest only for a giant skull-shaped portal to burst out of the ground and Ice King remembers the final and deadliest dungeon: Lich Land.
It’s revealed that while Simon and Hunson were having a dungeon meeting when the Lich appeared out of nowhere and then suddenly three weeks had passed for the two. While Hunson suspected the Lich did something to the dungeons but Ice King never bothered to look and forgot about it. Finn and Jake want to go in and destroy everything evil he finds there to make sure the Lich’s influence is gone forever and the Ice King reluctantly comes with them.
When they arrive in the dungeon, Finn finds himself in a strange place where his body has been changed and Jake is a regular dog. Jake runs off and begins to dig a hole and with Finn’s help finds the Lich’s skull and destroys it. The skull explodes and reveals that Finn has won an amazing warrior helmet. Elsewhere, Jake and a smaller Finn have arrived back to Tree Fort where BMO is waiting with milk and cookies. Jake tries to stretch but finds that while he can’t, Finn can. They rub it off as a side effect of the portal and go eat the snacks and Finn claims to have used his stretchy powers to find and destroy the Lich’s spine in a swamp. Then Princess Bubblegum comes by with a cake made of Dog snacks. Elsewhere, Ice King arrives alone in a prison cell and to his joy he finds Betty, pinned to a wall by the Lich’s ribcage and limbs. He frees her and the two have a romantic embrace.
It is then revealed that the three are experiencing hallucinations while the Lich’s minions march through the portal.
Finally in part #5, Finn is happy about his new helmet but decides it’s time to leave and attempts to go through the portal but finds he cannot and Jake attacks him. Finn runs into farmhouse where Finn’s mom reveals that this is all an illusion made by the lich and bid Finn to stay there with them while the Lich kills everything, including him. Finn escapes and remembers how he was able to defeat the Lich last time with love, he sings a love ballad and this is so repellent to his fake mother that she throws him out of the fantasy.
Finn finds himself in the real Jake’s fantasy and explains what is happening. The fake Finn in the illusions turns into a monster and grabs Finn while the fake Princess Bubblegum threatens Jake. Jake tickles the monster, causing him to step on the fake princess and before it can crush them as well they sing another love ballad that cause it to throw them out of the fantasy.
The duo now find themselves in Ice King’s fantasy, where they find Ice King and Betty building an ice castle. They find the Ice King refuses to believe that this is fake and when they finally do convince him, he’s perfectly happy to go along with the illusion, because he was finally reunited with Betty. This forced Finn and Jake to sing another ballad, but this time it’s about how this Betty isn’t the real one and force Ice King to see reality and the illusion was dispelled, much to Ice King’s sadness.
The trio now escape the illusions and find themselves in front of the Echo of the Lich. The wraith mocks the trio, especially Ice King who belittles as a senile old man who is losing all his memories, has no friends or loved ones and will die alone. However, Ice King is able to ignore the insults and distract the Echo long enough for Finn to throw Jake in its skull for him to blow himself out to shatter it.
Having finally gotten past all the dungeons, they finally get to the prizes. Jake receives gets a mailman’s outfit, Finn gets a new sword, and Ice King finds a small heart shaped gem that fits perfectly in his crown. Ice King then flies out of the dungeon with Finn and Jake in hand, with Jake commenting how his stomach hurts. (He ate a lich minion last issue, believing it was a cake in his illusion.)
