Adventure Time is an American animated television series created by Pendleton Ward for Cartoon Network. It follows the adventures of a boy named Finn and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake – a dog with the magical power to change shape and size at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, where they interact with Princess Bubblegum, the Ice King, Marceline the Vampire Queen, BMO, and others. After a short became a viral hit on the Internet, Cartoon Network commissioned a full-length series, which previewed on March 11, 2010, and officially premiered on April 5, 2010. Adventure Time’s success has led to various forms of licensed merchandise, including books, video games, clothing, and so much more!
When Fionna rescues a feral flame boy from the Ice Queen, it starts her on a quest she’ll never forget…it’s a crazy adventure with magic flan and magic wands, everything you need in a monster-fighting, queen-defeating, wacky story filled with friends and sweet, sweet justice. This totally mathematical hardcover edition features never-before-seen extras, including an inside look into the making of the Adventure Time” with Fionna & Cake comic!
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, The issue begins during a monsoon rainstorm at night and Cake is telling Fionna her story of a woman made of fire and how she became the first volcano. Fionna is not impressed with the story, however, she sees baby Fire Lions running away from Ice Queen.
As Fionna and Cake prepare to confront her, Cake reveals she has made nine different swords to replace the sword Ice Queen tricked her with. The swords are less than impressive and Fionna is questionable about using them, but eventually using the “kitty litter sword.”
Ice Queen is blasting ice at the Fire Lions for being in her snow banks. Flame Prince sees this and attacks her. However, he hesitates and Ice Queen freezes him and sticks an ice crystal she planned on using on the Flambits in him and lets him fall to the ground. However, he is saved by Fionna and Cake, who have come to confront the Ice Queen. The issue ends with Cake telling Fionna not to be checking out Flame Prince, much to Fionna’s embarrassment.
Next in part #2, The fight between Ice Queen and Fionna and Cake begins as the rainstorm stops. After being hit with Fionna’s kitty litter sword, Ice Queen uses the frozen baby Fire Lions as a shield and retreats in disgust. Fionna checks on Flame Prince and is shocked by what she sees.
Back at the Tree Fort, it is revealed that Flame Prince has been turned into a small fire ball-like creature. He speaks cat and Cake translates that he needs to find his lion pride so he can protect his family’s babies from the rain and Ice Queen until monsoon season is over.
As Fionna goes to change out of her wet clothes, a monster bursts into the Tree Fort, as the smoke clears the monster changes to reveal an injured Marshall Lee who needs to see Fionna immediately, much to Cake’s annoyance.
Next in part #3, Marshall Lee has shown up at Fionna and Cake’s Tree Fort looking for help, much to Cake’s contempt. He eventually convinces the ladies to help him when he tells of how “Boy’s Night” had gone terribly wrong and how Prince Gumball is now trapped in a dungeon below his very own kitchen in the Candy Kingdom. Marshall Lee explains how Gumball found a map leading to treasure and the boys literally blew a huge hole right in the middle of Gumball’s castle.
After going down the hole they find that the dungeon is filled with candy skeletons who attack them. However Fionna and Cake defeat them and find Gumball trapped in a giant piece of magic flan that hypnotizes people by reflecting their own beauty onto them. Cake turns into a spoon, which Fionna then uses to scoop Gumball free.
Gumball reveals that the reason why they didn’t invite Fionna to “Boy’s Night” was because he had finally found the Ancient Enchanted Oven, a legendary artifact that can be used to create items that are magical, beautiful, and powerful. As he prepares the dough to make the item, he notices that the oven’s pilot light is out. Luckily Flame Prince pops out Fionna’s backpack and offers to help. As a thank you for all of the times that she has helped him, Gumball uses the oven to make Fionna a new sword with the ability to grant small wishes. Fionna, with sword in hand, wishes that she, Gumball, and Marshall Lee had matching “Boy’s Night” t-shirts. Cake forces Fionna, Gumball, and Marshall to sit in her baby sling before they all leave the dungeon together.
Next in part #4, Prince Gumball asks Fionna about Flame Prince and she tells him the story of what happened and shows him one of Ice Queen’s crystals and Gumball recognizes it as a heated salt crystal. He tells her that the crystal absorbs heat and the one inside of Flame Prince will eventually evaporate him into nothing. Gumball puts Flame Prince inside his oven until they find a way to help him and Fionna goes to the bathroom. While she’s in the bathroom, Lumpy Space Prince sneaks into the castle, steals Fionna’s wand sword and uses it to make himself really handsome.
He returns to Lumpy Space and all the women fawn over him and give him gifts. However, they soon become so infatuated with him that they capture Lumpy Space Prince and stick him in a glass ball for display. Fionna eventually arrives, free Lumpy Space Prince and demands he return her wand sword. When his fangirls try to stop her from taking Lumpy Space Prince, they try and tell them not to be manipulated by his handsomeness. However, it becomes clear that Lumpy Space Prince and the Lumpy Space People have learned nothing, so Fionna just punches his face back to normal.
As the fangirls leave, Lumpy Space Prince gives Fionna back her wand sword and apologizes. As Fionna leaves Lumpy Space, she tells him if he start doing good things people will realize how beautiful he really is.
Next in part #5, Fionna is returning with her wand and meets Marshall Lee, who is going home. Fionna goes downstairs and discovers Prince Gumball’s oven was able to temporarily restore Flame Prince to his normal form and that Cake gave him new clothes. When Flame Prince tries to touch Fionna, he sets her hat on fire and when Cake puts it out, it hurts him. Gumball explains that he raised his body temperature, so he’s too hot to touch but at midnight he’ll revert to his weakened state as long the heated salt crystal is inside him.
Prince Gumball reveals that he informed Ice Queen that the fire lion cubs she captured belong to a prince. She agreed to return them if Flame Prince goes on a fancy dinner date with her. They disguise Fionna and Cake as a Fire Lion and they and Flame Prince go to the Ice Kingdom to try and trick Ice Queen into getting the heated salt crystal out of his heart.
When they arrive at the Ice Kingdom, Ice Queen invites them in and reveals the frozen fire lion cubs and freezes Flame Prince, seeing easily through Fionna and Cake’s disguise. Fionna attacks her but is easily subdued by Ice Queen who holds her by her hair and prepares to freezes her until Flame Prince shoots fire at her hand and accidentally sets Fionna’s hair ablaze.
Finally in part #6, The issue starts off with the tale of a water nymph, who saves a cat and is offered immortality. Refusing, the cat still goes on the dangerous quest to reward her (unbeknownst the nymph is following the cat). Before the cat is killed by falling stalactites, the nymph sacrifices her life to save the cat and ends up dying. The cat then grants the nymph immortality by giving her a special gem.
The main story line continues from the last issue with Fionna and Ice Queen still duking it out, along with Fionna’s hair still ablaze (and FP is still trapped in ice). Fionna contemplates the current situation and what she should try to protect. Her final decision is to cut off her hair (much to cake’s disappointment). Fionna and Cake are denied the chance to resolve the issue at hand and soon realize that a butt-kicking isn’t enough to beat the Ice Queen. As the two are battling, Fionna asks Ice Queen why she hates her so much, causing a surprising answer. Eventually, Ice Queen takes the Crystal Salt Gem from FP’s heart and starts to melt. As she it melting, she tells Fionna that, “There’s so many strange magic in this world, be careful with it, Fionna,” basically telling her to remember to be self reliant, and you can’t always count on magic to solve your problems. After the battle, Fionna and Cake have a conversation into which the text of the comic fades into quacks from Gunter.
