Writer: James Kuhoric
Artist: Dave Simons
Colorists: Ivan Nunes & Rael Sidharta
Letterer: Simon Bowland
Cover by: Dave Simons & Giovani Kososki
Dynamite presents their first ever Christmas Special…this time with a twist as we send Ash on a Christmas adventure the likes of which the world has never seen! Will Evil Ash destroy Christmas? Can Good Ash stop Evil Ash from ruining Christmas? Is there really a Santa?
Everyone loves the holidays, right? Wrong! If you’ve ever worked S-Mart retail in December, you know it’s a special hell filled with something even worse than Deadit’s…dumbass holiday shoppers. And when the Necronomicon gets a hold of some classic holiday entertainment, it’sends Ash through a voyage of twisted Christmas visions that beat him senseless and initiate something deeper in Ash. “it’s a blunderful life” for everyone’s favorite big chinned Chosen One and this year he’s going to face something tougher than the Deadite Santas and zombie elves. He’ll find a piece of his soul that was swallowed long ago…
Story/Spoilers
After having dealt with a Deadite Santa running amuck at the store the previous year, newly promoted manager of housewares Ash Williams is ready for an evil-free Christmas Eve-eve at S-Mart. As the workday draws to an end, Mr. Smart asks Ash to be the store’s new Santa tomorrow since the Claus Union will not send anyone. Ash angrily rejects Smart’s proposal and marches out of the store, heading back to his dark and dismal apartment to get drunk and watch Christmas specials on TV. Finding nothing good on television, Ash reprimands the Necronomicon for taking away all the good things in his life and heads to bed. While Ash is asleep, the book “absorbs” the various Christmas specials and releases an emerald haze in the apartment, which begins to creep into Ash’s thoughts.
Ash awakens to find three spirits visiting him (two of which resemble The Wise Man and Mr. Smart), who tell him he needs to follow “the Christmas star” to find out what the holidays mean to him. The ghosts give Ash his chainsaw and Boomstick and send him out into the cold, where the world slowly begins to resemble various Christmas specials.
After venting his frustrations about holiday shoppers to a group of children preparing for a Christmas play, Ash arrives in a sepia-tone part of town, where he finally finds the Christmas star. To his surprise, he discovers the “star” is in fact a sales spotlight positioned outside of S-Mart, nothing more than a marketing gimmick. While outside of the store, Ash peers through the window, where he sees another Deadite Santa going on a rampage, killing employees and customers alike. He then realizes it’s not another Santa, it’s last year’s incident, except he’s not there to stop the chaos.
A cloaked figure, the silent spirit who had previously appeared in Ash’s apartment with the other two ghosts, approaches Williams, taking off it’s hood to reveal the face of Linda, the real Linda. Ash embraces his lost love, who then tells him that it’s his destiny to be the hero to stop the forces of evil that others cannot. Ash understands the meaning of this “journey”, and asks the fleeting spirit how to get out of this nightmare…
The following morning, S-Mart is packed with last-minute shoppers, and Mr. Smart is in a panic as everyone is clamoring for Santa to arrive. Ash arrives in the backroom, telling Smart that he’ll be Santa, but he’ll want some changes in regards to his pay and work schedule. Smart relents, and Ash gets into the Santa costume, warning the kids that if any of them “drop a bladder blotch” on him, he’ll give them a bag of crap for Christmas.
