Description
The Art of Ray Harryhausen Over-sized Hardcover w/ Dust Jacket
By: Ray Harryhausen & Tony Dalton
Foreword by: Peter Jackson
Front Cover of Dust Jacket by: Ray Harryhausen {The 7th Voyage of Sinbad}
Lavishly illustrated and packed with Harryhausen’s own words and images. The huge ape of Mighty Joe Young. The fighting skeletons of Jason and the Argonauts. And, of course, the angry T. Rex of Island of the Gwangi. All these creations and many more, seared into our collective consciousness, are the work of one man – Ray Harryhausen. The father of special effects, Ray Harryhausen is revered among film historians, animators, special-effects designers, and everyone who’s ever seen his inspired stop-motion creations. In 2004, Watson-Guptill published Ray Harryhausen: An Animated Life to critical acclaim and sales of over 20,000 copies. Now WG is pleased to present a companion book: The Art of Ray Harryhausen. Concise essays and lavish illustrations look at each of Harryhausen’s many specialties, including aliens, prehistoric creatures, mythological monsters, and much more. At last, fans of Harryhausen can see the progression of his work over time, in a visual celebration of his art and artistry. Featuring 211 color and 74 black and white illustrations.
In An Animated Life, Ray Harryhausen told the story of his career as the acknowledged grandmaster of special effects in the pre-digital era. As one of the most highly acclaimed stop-motion animators in movie history, he was responsible for the dinosaurs, aliens, and mythological creatures in such classic films as The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Jason & the Argonauts, Earth Vs the Flying Saucers, 20 Million Miles to Earth, One Million Years B.C., and Mysterious Island, as well as his Puppetoons and Mother Goose Stories.
In this companion volume, the focus is not on the movies themselves but on the vast hoard of artwork that Harryhausen has carefully preserved in his London home, much of which is published here for the first time. Reproduced to the highest standards, this artwork includes preliminary sketches and elaborate drawings of key scenes and carefully plotted storyboards, all produced as he prepared to undertake the laborious task of animating the wondrous creatures that scene after scene from the human actors. Also depicted here are the tiny, elaborately articulated models that Harryhausen created to play these roles and the bronzes which he cast to preserve their forms in perpetuity.
The stunning array of images in this book is a tribute to the vast scope of Harryhausen’s imagination and artistic skills. It is a collection that no one interested in special effects of cinema history can afford to be without.
