Stage-Station Keep, Charlie Burnette has been murdered! So, what does that mean to Deputy-Under Sheriff Samuel David? It means just one more body and one less bullet. The problem, partner, is that the townspeople don’t feel the same way…. Welcome to the town of Utopia.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, The man asleep under the rock is deputy-under Sheriff, Samuel David of Dubios County. The horse’s name is Heifer. And the town’s name is Utopia. But this quiet, idyllic, little town is about to become a dystopia when murder rears its ugly head and a corpse is discovered to the chagrin of the town folk. Now deputy-under Sheriff, Samuel David has no time for naps when he finds his hands full as he searches for the killer.
Next in issue #2, After discovering the stage station on fire, Deputy Samuel David literally stumbles upon stage-keep Charlie Burnette tied up and shot in the head. The town council decide that Charlie’s death is not worth upsetting the town folk, including Captain Hale’s forthcoming bride, so it is to be kept quite. The Sheriff’s department finds Birdy Johnson, a stage driver, who was the last person to see Charlie alive. They take Birdy to Dr. Bell’s so he can identify the body. In preparing the body for the autopsy they discover that Charlie Burnette was actually a woman.
Next in issue #3, During the funeral, a drunken Birdy stumbles and flips Charlie’s corpse out of the coffin infront of the town folk. Embarrassed, the council berates Sheriff Wakefield to find the killer. Later that day, Deputy David and the man with the cat skull on his hat become engaged in a gun battle with three outlaws.
Next in issue #4, Later on, Sam is paid a visit by bounty hunter Brigham Love. Seeking the large reward, Love has brought the decapitated head of legendary outlaw Chill Harper to the Sheriff’s department. Upon enlisting Brigham’s aid in helping him find Charlie’s killer(s), Sam becomes embroiled in a gun fight with Chill’s gang. All the while, Captain Hale’s bride Johanna has arrived in town along with banker Orirdion’s son Alexander.
Next in issue #5, Blaming Harper’s men with the shooting of Burnette, Love ingratiates himself with the town fathers. And through Machiavellian dealings sets up a meeting with Utopia’s most influential citizen, and his primary suspect: Captain Hale. Meanwhile, Dr. Bell’s youngest daughter, Eunice, experiences a horrifying vision while playing and Alexander visits his ever demented mother.
Next in issue #6, Satisfied that Hale is his man, Brigham informs Sam that he plans on blackmailing the Captain and has accepted a job. But what starts out as a standard manhunt quickly becomes something else.
Next in issue #7, Convinced that Hale is their man, Sam along with Brigham, accepts a job in bringing down an unusual group of rustlers. After a brutal chase through mazelike canyons the pair confronts the leaders of the gang.
Finally in issue #8, Individual perceptions of events vary wildly as Johanna lies in shock after seeing the strange painting created through the diseased mind of her distant husband, Eunice has another vision, and Birdy is arrested and beaten before being rescued from the town jail by Sam and Brigham.
