Baltimore is an American horror comic book series created by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. The series originally began with an illustrated novel, Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire in 2007. It followed the story of Lord Baltimore’s hunt of the vampire Haigus as told by his three friends, Doctor Lemuel Rose, Thomas Childress Jr., and Demetrius Aischros. The series is a part of Mignola and Golden’s Outerverse, a shared universe with Joe Golem and other titles such as Lady Baltimore.
France, August, 1916: Lord Henry Baltimore follows the trail of his nemesis, the vampire Haigus, to a coastal village of Villefranche, where he is arrested by the suspicious local authorities, who summon an inquisitor to interrogate him. Baltimore is freed by a young woman, Vanessa, who insists that he take her with him when he escapes the town. Their ship is attacked at sea and they are stranded on an island filled with derelict ships. When the corpses of the ships’ crews rise up to attack them, Baltimore locks Vanessa inside a wrecked U-boat and holds off the horde of revenants until dawn. Vanessa chooses to return home, not knowing that the inquisitor, Judge Duvic, has arrived and is torturing her grandmother to learn Baltimore’s whereabouts.
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, Months after a devastating plague ends World War I, Europe is suddenly flooded with deadly vampires. Lord Henry Baltimore, a soldier determined to wipe out the monsters, is on the hunt for the creature responsible for this chaos and his own personal tragedy. What he uncovers is a terror as horrific and frightening as any he’s seen on the battlefield.
Next in part #2, Setting sail from a harbor choked with sunken ships, where plague victims are burned in great furnaces, Lord Baltimore reveals a terrible incident that took place during the war, where his men fell victim to creatures that feast on the freshly dead, and Baltimore himself first met the vampire who has become his obsession.
Next in part #3, After a furious storm rips apart their ship, Baltimore and Vanessa wash up on an island shore in the midst of a graveyard of submarines. While taking refuge they stumble upon a ruined plague ship-a vessel used to burn vampires-now entrenched in a grotesque and dangerous fungus.
Next in part #4, While hunting the vampire responsible for the death of his family, Lord Baltimore gets stranded on a haunted island, where horrible fungus spores cover the beaches and rotting corpses don’t stay dead.
Finally in part #5, After a weird array of plague vampires attack them on the island shore, Vanessa suspects that Lord Baltimore may be damned after all.
