Description
Batman: Broken City Hardcover w/ Dust Jacket
Writer: Brian Azzarello
Artist: Eduardo Risso
Colorist: Patricia MulVihil
Letterer: Clem Robins
Editors: Will Dennis, Bob Schreck & Robert Greenberger
Cover by: Dave Johnson
Originally planned as a graphic novel and then serialized in the pages of Batman over five issues, this story by crime–master Brian Azzerello (100 Bullets) and Eduardo Risso (Batman Black and White) was a smash success. Pitting Batman against some of his most vicious rogues in a murder mystery with plenty of seedy action, Azzerello constructed a story that will probably rank among the best in the long history of the Dark Knight. If you like noir fiction, pick this book up. Risso’s dark, moody art is perfectly suited for the dark streets of Gotham.
Story/Spoilers
First in part #1, Batman is trying to get information from Killer Croc about Elizabeth Lupo’s death. He does so by hanging Croc upside down from the side of a building. Batman punches Croc repeatedly. He knows that Croc killed Lupo. He also knows he has no evidence to prove it. What he doesn’t know is who hired Croc. Batman searches Angel Lupo’s place and finds a woman named Margo Farr, half-dressed, in bed. She tells him that Angel hired Croc to kill his sister. Batman tricks Margo into revealing that Angel has fled to Havana, Cuba. He then waits outside and follows her because he believes Angel is not really in Havana. While following Margo, Batman saves her from a street punk.
Next in part #2, The hunt for murderer Angel Martinez continues…but the closer Batman gets to him, the more his own dark past comes into focus! And with a little help from his old “friends” The Penguin and Scarface, Batman’s troubles are going to get worse before they get better.
Next in part #3, Batman recuperates from his wounds and sets out to find Angel Lupo. First, he visits the Penguin and is told that Angel made a deal with people named Fat Man and Little Boy. Penguin tells Batman he should visit Scarface next, so the caped crusader drops in on Scarface and his gang. Batman takes out Scarface’s henchmen and holds Scarface’s dummy’s face up to the nozzle of a cappucino machine.
Next in part #4, Batman chases down a street thug and knocks him down. He is attacked from behind by a female member wearing the same gang colors. As Batman stands up, he sees a large man carrying a fishhook. He learns the woman is Little Boy and the man is Fat Man. Batman tells them he is looking for Angel Lupo, just as they are. Fat Man tells Batman that Angel is not a killer and that someone else must have killed his sister. Batman moves throughout Gotham rousting the criminal element and interrogating all that he finds as to where he can find Lupo. Batman learns that Angel’s sister was pregnant when she died. He meets with Killer Croc and the two get into a fight. In the midst of the fight, a woman shows up and shoots at Batman and Killer Croc. As Batman realizes he must now find Angel to save him, instead of to bring him to justice, he detains his attacker.
Next in part #5, Margo Farr admits to Batman that she killed Angel Lupo’s sister. Penguin shows up and gives Batman the address at which Lupo is staying. Meanwhile Killer Croc finds out from a source that Angel is nearby. Batman finds Fat Man and Little Boy waiting for him at Lupo’s address. He fights them and beats them in time for Lupo to appear. Lupo points a handgun at Batman, loses his nerve, and runs off into the night. Lupo is shot.
Finally in part #6, Over the past 6 months, Batman has been pushed to his limits? physically and mentally. But when the Dark Knight finally catches up to Angel Lupo and discovers the dark secret behind a young boy’s dead parents, his world is turned upside-down…and he’ll need the help of The Joker to put things right! Don’t miss the end of the Batman arc everyone is talking about!
