Description
Batman: False Faces Sealed Hardcover
Introduction by: Brian K. Vaughan
Cover by: Scott McDaniel, Andy Owens & Guy Major
Don’t miss this hard-hitting volume from award-winning writer Brian K. Vaughan! In the first of these tales of the DCU, Bruce Wayne adopts the guise of Matches Malone – the seedy identity he uses to infiltrate the Gotham underworld. But when Matches is shot, it’s up to Batman to determine what really happened… and how Scarface is involved! Plus, in other stories, Batman takes on the Mad Hatter, and Wonder Woman and Donna Troy square off against Clayface! Brian K. Vaughan’s tales remind us of how dangerous wearing a false face can be… and of how we can become lost behind the masks we wear!
Batman: False Faces contains:
“Close Before Striking, Act One”
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Artist: Scott McDaniel
Inker: Karl C. Story
Colorists: Wildstorm FX & Roberta Tewes
Letterer: John Costanza
Editors: Bob Schreck & Michael Wright
The Batman walks into a seedy bar, asking about a shipment of armor-piercing “Cop Killer” bullets coming into Gotham City. Seeing Matches Malone at the end of the bar, he walks over, picks him up by the scruff, and demands information. Matches refuses and spits in his face, and Batman throws him out of the window, threatens the room again and leaves. Shortly afterwards, Scarface offers Matches a place on the team he’s assembling that night to pull the score previously in question, which Matches graciously accepts. After Matches leaves, the Batmobile swings around and picks him up. Dick Grayson is driving, still in the Batman costume from before, and Bruce takes off his Matches Malone disguise and grabs the wheel. Their attempt to reestablish Matches’ credibility had been a success, and they prepare for the night’s activities. On the railroad line where the Ventriloquist and his crew are taking the incoming train shipment, Batman and Nightwing ambush them. They are successful in preventing the smuggling operation, but the Ventriloquist is able to escape. Naturally, as the operation had been kept relatively secret, and Matches Malone was the only one to bail, Scarface makes the conclusion that Matches is snitching to the Batman. Later that evening in the cave, Bruce and Dick receive a disturbing phone call from Oracle. It seems that Matches Malone has just been shot.

“Close Before Striking, Act two”
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Artist: Scott McDaniel
Inker: Karl C. Story
Colorists: Wildstorm FX & Roberta Tewes
Letterer: John Costanza
Editors: Bob Schreck & Michael Wright
Matches Malone is dead, and Batman is none too happy about this. It had generally been assumed that Malone was simply an assumed ID, but as Batman tells Nightwing, there really was a Malone many years ago, one of a pair of arsonist brothers. When his brother Carver died, possibly at his hands, Matches committed suicide and Batman took over his identity. However, Malone had faked his death and took on another life “back home in Hoboken”. When he heard about the possible stool pigeon with his name, he decided it was time to come back to Gotham, only to find himself in serious trouble with Scarface.

“Close Before Striking, Act Three”
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Artist: Scott McDaniel
Inker: Karl C. Story
Colorists: Wildstorm FX & Roberta Tewes
Letterer: John Costanza
Editors: Bob Schreck & Michael Wright
Batman’s longtime alter-ego, Matches Malone, has a deadly encounter with Scarface. Will Matches be able to come out of this unscathed? Meanwhile, Batman just may slip into madness as he tries to reconcile his alter-egos.

“Mimsy were the Borogoves”
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Artist: Rick Burchett
Inker: John Lowe
Colorist: Jason Wright
Letterer: John Costanza
Editors: Bob Schreck & Michael Wright
When Doctor Kirk Langstrom, the scientist sometimes known as “Man-Bat,” is kidnapped, and a mysterious clue is left behind at his house, The Batman already knows he will not have an easy night ahead of him. The clue is a cryptic Lewis Carroll quote, and Batman visits Arkham Asylum to locate Jervis Tetch, “The Mad Hatter,” who has apparently escaped, and kidnapped his most recent social worker as well, “Jeffrey Yorkes.” When Batman does find him, the Hatter has already injected his social worker with a cocktail version of one of Langstrom’s serums. Instead of only Man-Bat DNA, it also contains the DNA of both Killer Croc, and Solomon Grundy; transforming Yorkes into a terrible dragon-like hybrid, perfectly fitting the bill to play Lewis Carroll’s “The Jabberwock,” and wreak havoc upon Gotham City for the Hatter’s amusement. After rescuing Langstrom and returning to the cave for the Man-Bat antidote, Batman is able to revert Yorkes to his original form and save him before he plummets to his death. As the Hatter is being dragged away, Yorkes insists that he not be dealt with harshly this time, no matter how bad his actions seemed; he believes that the Hatter had actually been trying to help him. Prior to his experience, he had been unable to even comprehend Tetch, let alone understand how he got that way, despite his best efforts. After spending a night as an uncontrollable fictional beast, he had gained insight into how the Hatter’s mind worked, and was now better suited to help him become a normal person again.
