The Many Deaths Of The Batman tells the tale of a shocking act against the caped crusader. While Batman’s on a case in Paris, the bodies of men found in Batman costumes continue to pile up in Gotham. Batman must discover the identity of the ‘Bat-Killer’ before anyone else is murdered.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Period of Mourning”, A police car screams across the Gotham City streets, and parks in an alley to investigate a tip. To their horror, they find it’s true. The Batman is dying, strung up on a fence like Jesus on the cross. An ambulance rushes him to the hospital, and amidst a frenzy of activity they try to save his life. Two doctors fight when one of them tries to take off his mask. They are unable to save him, and the Batman dies. Batman is brought to the morgue, where a seedy journalist bribes a guard to get some photos. The next day, it’s all over the papers; “Batman Dead” is the headline. The Penguin reads the paper in Arkham, and is furious. Two-Face reads the paper, and flips his coin. It comes up on the scarred side, so he rejoices. Dick Grayson trembles with grief, and Starfire attempts to comfort him. Alfred Pennyworth is shocked, and runs into the Batcave to investigate, finding it empty. When Jim Gordon, out of town, hears the news, he immediately flies back to Gotham and goes straight to the city morgue. He says two words to everybody in the room. “Get out.” The room empties, and he pulls off Batman’s mask to look underneath. It’s a blonde man he’s never seen before.
On top of the Gotham Plaza Hotel, another man in a Batman costume is blown to pieces in a huge explosion. And another Batman chases a masked criminal across several rooftops near the harbor, before falling into the water and drowning.
Next in issue #2, “How Many Times Can A Batman Die?”, A third and forth Batman killing was discovered. All four were experts in their fields: a race car driver, a demolitionist, a chemist, and a body builder. A fifth turned up, a gymnast. Gordon investigated by visiting a cross-bow expert (a cross-bow had killed the gymnast) who’d recently arrived in Gotham. He greeted Gordon in a Batman costume and told him that Bruce Wayne had sent it to him for a masquerade. The man died while Gordon was there. The Commissioner went to see Wayne. While talking to Wayne, Alfred brought in a package that had arrived – a Batman costume laced with acid.
Finally in issue #3, “The Last Death of the Batman”, Gotham police are on the scene of a homicide, when they find that the deceased scratched a bat into the carpet before she died. Back at Wayne Manor, a frustrated Bruce Wayne laments to Alfred Pennyworth that so long as the police are at the Manor protecting him, he cannot leave as Batman, preventing him from finding the Bat-killer. Finally, Wayne can take it no longer, and risks sneaking into the Batcave. Alfred distracts the police, by bringing out a tray of food. In the cave, Batman analyzes the list of the Batkiller’s victims so far. He follows a clue to the apartment of a man named Bosch, only to find that Bosch is dead. Batman disguises himself as importer/exporter Mr. Shastri and arranges a meeting with a Mr. Jones, who turns out to be the Batkiller in disguise. Batman confronts Jones, but is given an electric shock and Jones escapes. Batman tracks down the killer, Jerry Sawyer, and stops him in the middle of his next murder.
