DC’s “Elseworlds” stories — reimagining key characters in non-continuity tales. Here the story is set in 1800s Baltimore, Maryland and focuses — as you might guess from the title’s allusion to the poem “The Raven” — on the real life writer, Edgar Allan Poe. Poe is actually the main character. Working as a reporter (as the real Poe did at one point) Poe gets caught up investigating a series of grisly murders that seem to be targeting members of an exclusive gentlemen’s club — The Gotham Club. At the same time, a mysterious vigilante who dresses in a bat-like costume is prowling the city and Poe and the Batman ally together to ferret out the villain.

A 5-issue Elseworlds miniseries that brings the World’s Greatest Detective together with the inventor of the modern detective story: Edgar Allan Poe! There is a series of murders, and the public misunderstands Batman’s role, thinking he may be the homicidal maniac. Batman entrusts a young reporter named, Poe to solve the case and clear his name…

Story/Spoilers:
In issue #1, “Once Upon a Dreary Midnight…”, In Baltimore in the late 1800s, a number of high-ranking citizens’ have been murdered in ways that defy explanation. The only thing linking the murders are sightings of a giant raven fleeing each crime scene…

Next in issue #2, “…The Hideous Beast…”, Edgar Allan Poe’s investigation into Baltimore’s “Raven Murders” reaches a fever pitch! Poe’s discovery of the mysterious Batman prowling the murder scenes brings a new twist to an already twisted tale. Batman’s strange abilities and techniques disturb Poe, but he’s the only friend Poe has left, and with the body count increasing, Poe needs all the friends he can get…especially when the author realizes he’s next on the murderer’s list of victims!

Next in issue #3, “…A Commotion of the Earth…”, Edgar Allan Poe’s Elseworlds encounter with the Dark Knight continues! Poe’s investigation into the mysterious “Raven Murders” becomes personal, as the killer sets out to take care of Poe once and for all! Even with help from the dark and frightening Batman, it doesn’t look like Poe is going to make it in one piece…either physically or mentally.

Next in issue #4, “…A Fearful Scimitar…”, Edgar Allan Poe’s investigations into the Raven Murders have brought him closer to madness than he could have ever imagined. With the body count rising, The Batman and Poe learn the killer has marked them for death!

Finally, in issue #5, “…Masque of the Red Death…”, The amazing conclusion to the Elseworlds tale! Edgar Allan Poe has faced his own inner demons as well as the mysterious Raven Murderer. Now his investigation is at an end, and not even the Batman’s intervention and detective skills will be enough to prepare Poe for the truth that lies behind the murders of Baltimore’s elite!
