Batman and Superman have teamed up many times over the years. The two heroes are opposites in many ways. Batman rules in dark Gotham and cultivates fear, while Superman builds trust in clean, bright Metropolis. Batman believes he could clean up Gotham in one day with Superman’s powers. But Superman thinks Batman couldn’t handle super–villains, aliens, and scientific experiments gone awry. Unfortunately, their lack of teamwork during an early mission causes a terrible tragedy. Now, each year on the anniversary of the event, the two heroes are drawn together once more. As they patrol each other’s cities together, a begrudging respect grows. This series chronicles how their relationship and this respect develops, year–by–year and adventure–by–adventure.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Year One: Different Worlds”, In Gotham City, Batman foils a robbery. In Metropolis, Superman foils a robbery. At the Daily Planet, Editor-in-Chief Perry White, tells Clark Kent he has been invited to attend the opening of a reconstructive surgery center in New York. Bruce Wayne also attends the opening. Kent and Wayne meet at the center. Harry Harrison announces at the opening that he is retiring. Backstage a man with a gun kidnaps Harrison and heads out the back door. Batman and Superman appear and foil the kidnapping. They meet up afterward and Superman tells Batman the goon he captured mention the Independent Citizens Militia. Batman tells Superman the ICM broke out Eric Stang, a serial killer, in Gotham City. Batman tells Superman he wants to handle things alone and is not interested in being part of a team. Superman comes alone anyway. The two handily defeat Stang’s henchmen and Stang grabs Dr. Grey, holding him hostage. They approach Stang, who is holding a deadmans switch to a bomb he planted in the building. Superman tells Stang, he has already defused the bomb. At the same time, Batman tells Stang he is jamming the detonator. Stang releases Grey and jumps out the window. Batman and Superman both go after Stang and rescue him from the fall. While they are arguing with one another about two heroes capturing Stang being overkill, Grey is running for his life and is hit by a truck and killed. Clark and Wayne attend the funeral. Clark tells Wayne that if Batman and Superman had worked together, perhaps Grey would still be alive. Wayne agrees.
Next in part #2, “Year Two: A Tale of Two Cities”, Batman and Superman visit Dr. Grey’s grave on the anniversary of his death. Batman and Superman tell each other how different their cities are from one another and Superman suggests they both patrol one city for half the night and the other city for the other half. Batman agrees and they begin their night in Gotham City. Batman and Superman foil a robbery by a group of criminals calling themselves The Henchmen. Then they head to Metropolis. Knodar, a criminal from the future, ties a woman to train tracks. Superman stands in front of the train, stopping it from running over the woman. Batman chases down Knodar. The next morning, Batman and Superman decide they are a pretty good team. Batman suggests they team up again on the anniversary of Grey’s death next year. Superman agrees.
Next in part #3, “Year Three: Light in the Darkness”, A man dressed as Superman tries to thwart a crime by a criminal named Illuminata. He is nearly killed in the process. Gotham P.D. takes down the criminal, and the “Superman” is sent to Arkham Asylum. That night, Illuminata appears at Arkham and frees “Superman” and the other inmates. It turns out that “Superman” really is Superman and he immediately sets about rounding up the inmates of Arkham. Batman shows up and helps Superman capture many of the inmates. Then they realize that they still have not accounted for the Joker. Working together they catch the Joker and Superman tells Batman he came to Arkham to write an expose for the Daily Planet.
Next in part #4, “Year Four: Underworlds”, Alfred Pennyworth brings Batman his dinner and reminds him that Dick Grayson’s school play opens at the end of the week. He suggests that Bruce Wayne attend. Batman tells Alfred that someone in Suicide Slum has been watching Superman. Batman goes to Metropolis. In Metropolis, Superman saves a woman and her child from a burning building. Batman shows up and pulls another kid out of the building. Batman tells Superman that someone is monitoring him. Superman shows Batman a small sphere that he found. Batman and Superman go to the place that is monitoring Superman and find Desaad in the midst of a deal with Inter-gang. Desaad flees through a Boom Tube and Batman and Superman round up the Inter-gang members. Superman flies to the apartment of the lady he saved from the fire earlier and has breakfast with her and her kids. On his way back to Gotham, Batman radios Alfred and tells him to make sure and get him a ticket to Dick’s play.
Next in part #5, “Year Five: A Woman’s Work”, Batgirl is in the midst of foiling a burglary when Superman shows up and lends a hand. Batgirl and Superman determine that the burglars are members of a Metropolis gang known as the 100. Batgirl suggests the two of them team up to solve the case. Meanwhile, Thorn breaks up a criminal deal by a group of 100 gang members. She is knocked down by one of the gang members and they tie her wrists. Thorn manages to escape, and the lights in the warehouse go out. Batman starts taking out gang members. Batman and Batgirl arrive to find that they’ve missed the action.
Next in part #6, “Year Six: The Imp-Possible Dream”, Mr. Mxyzptlk is in Metropolis and he meets up with Bat-Mite. The two imps argue over who is better, Superman or Batman, and the two decide to prove which one is best. Bruce Wayne is visiting Clark Kent at the Daily Planet, when suddenly, time stops except for Wayne and Kent. Bat-Mite and Mxyzptlk appear and vanish Kent and Wayne’s civilian clothing, replacing it with their respective costumes. The two imps tell the heroes about their wager and tell them once a winner is declared they will restore reality. Batman and Superman race to save Lois Lane and both arrive at the same time. Next, the imps put the heroes in a fun house maze. The first to find his way out, wins the contest. The heroes find the exit at the same time. Mxyzptlk becomes frustrated, says his name backwards and disappears. Reality is restored and Kent sees Wayne off.
Next in part #7, “Year Seven: A Better World”, Batman returns to the cave, worse for wear. Alfred Pennyworth tells Batman he has a visitor. It is Superman. Batman asks if something is wrong. The two argue and Superman grabs Batman and flies out of the cave. Superman takes Batman to Smallville. The two talk about the ethics involved in crime fighting and the weight of the responsibility that comes with it. Superman hears a woman about to give birth and he and Batman rush to the scene and help deliver the baby since there is no doctor around. Then Superman takes Batman back to the Kent farm for flapjacks.
Next in part #8, “Year Eight: Cat & Mouse”, Catwoman steals a file from LexCorp. Bruce Wayne appears for a meeting with Lex Luthor. At that moment, Catwoman intentionally triggers an alarm. Superman appears and Luthor tells him that he doesn’t need the big blue boy scout’s help. Batman shows up and Luthor points to an open window saying that the thief must have left that way. Batman disagrees, saying the thief is still in the building. He asks Superman to use his super-vision to try and find her. His vision doesn’t work though, because Luthor has lined every wall with lead. Lois Lane and Alfred Pennyworth take the elevator, which stops on the 37th floor, where Catwoman is waiting for them. Superman arrives to save Lois and Catwoman blows up the elevator cables, dropping the elevator, which still holds Alfred, down the shaft. Superman flies after it. Batman drops into the room. Catwoman uses Superman’s return to cover her escape. Superman and Batman continue chasing Catwoman and Superman manages to retrieve the file she stole, but Catwoman gets away.
Next in part #9, “Year Nine: When It Reigns…It Pours!”, Batman meets the “Reign of the Supermen” pretenders (including Superboy) while Superman encounters the “new” Batman aka Azrael.
Finally in part #10, “Year Ten: War of the Worlds!”, Huge jailbreaks at Stryker’s Island in Metropolis and Arkham Asylum in Gotham City are only the beginning as huge groups of villains gather for war! Even Batman and Superman might not survive without the help of guest stars Superboy, Steel, Nightwing, and Robin. Meanwhile, curious developments come up in the case of Harrison Gray, the man whose death precipitated the yearly meetings between the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight.
