Deacon Blackfire, a charismatic shaman with roots as old as Gotham City itself, has amassed the city’s homeless into an army, one he seemingly uses to fight crime. But Blackfire has a hidden agenda… and it includes brainwashing Gotham City’s Dark Knight protector, Batman.

Story/Spoilers
In book #1, “Ordeal”, finds Gotham City has seemingly had its homelessness problem solved for it by some outside force. At the same time, a rash of disappearances is occurring in the criminal underground. Sensing a connection, Batman finds himself captured and broken by a mysterious cult worshipping a religious figure with ties to Gotham as old as the city itself. Just what happens when Batman is finally broken by Deacon Blackfire?

Next in book #2, “Capture”, finds Batman indoctrinated into Deacon Blackfire’s cult, he partakes in one of the raids on the criminal underworld. Then going off separately with another member of the cult, Batman is separated and is able to regain some of his senses. But when the GCPD discovers Blackfire’s intentions, Blackfire resorts to unthinkable methods in order to gain his grip on the city. And when Batman is re-captured by the cult, it’s up to Robin to save him!

Next in book #3, “Escape”, finds a state of emergency declared in Gotham City as Deacon Blackfire’s cult takes over the city by force, declaring war against the establishment. But what is more unbelievable, how the Deacon has maintained his long life, or the fact that the Deacon is truly centuries old? And just what shocking choice will Batman make when he and Robin finally escape Deacon Blackfire’s underworld and re-emerge into a Gotham City that has fallen?

Finally in book #4, “Combat”, finds Batman returning to Gotham City in order to free it from the clutches of Deacon Blackfire, can two men succeed where an entire army has failed? And just what is Deacon Blackfire’s true purpose behind his control of Gotham City. Will Batman give Deacon Blackfire what he wants, or will he face an entirely different fate?
