The Battlefield series is divided into three self-contained mini-series with three issues each, all of which are set during World War II. The first mini-series, “Happy Valley”, deals with a novice pilot assigned to an Australian bomber crew bombing German targets while hoping to stay alive for the three missions remaining until they return home. The second mini-series, “The Firefly and His Majesty”, follows the same British tank crew as they try to take down a powerful German tank. And finally, in the third mini-series, “Motherland”, the star pilot of the Witches gets transferred into a squadron of fighters defending the Russian front and must learn to once again work well with others.

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, In “From a Land Down Under”, England, January 1942: young Australian Ken Harding arrives at his first operational squadron, keen to play his part in the aerial attack on Germany as the commander of a bomber crew. Losses have been high and life expectancy is low, but Ken remains undaunted- until he meets his crew, a foulmouthed, battle-hardened bunch with no time for new boys who can’t stand the pace. Together, they must take the war to the enemy over the most heavily-defended region of the Third Reich – the industrial heartland of the Ruhr, known to the men who face the flak and nightfighters as Happy Valley.

Next in issue #2, In “In Pomgolia”, Between the flak, the searchlights, the night fighters and the freezing, airless cold at twenty-thousand feet, bombing Germany in midwinter is no joke at all- but with some of the friends he’s got, pilot Ken Harding might not even need any enemies. Ken gets to know his crew a little better, as they edge towards the last operation that will complete their tour of duty. One more nightmare flight, and then they can all go home…

Next in issue #3, In “Who’ll Come on Ops in a Wimpy with Me?”, One last operation, and then everyone gets to go home… but how long can one bomber crew beat the odds? Ken, Masher, Blue, Clive, Acker and Joe are determined to try their luck- but pushing their commander’s patience to breaking point results in a nightmare for all concerned. And with the German defenses growing more lethal all the time, will anyone make it home alive from the hellish skies above Happy Valley?

Next in issue #4, He’s got a new crew and a new tank, a Sherman Firefly with a high-velocity gun capable of taking out even the fearsome German Tiger. Too bad the enemy have a new tank of their own, the mighty King Tiger, with twice the armor and firepower of the original. As Stiles and his men join the Allied advance into the Nazi homeland, they soon realize that every inch of ground will be bitterly contested by the foe… and that there are worse horrors than Tigers lurking in the gloom of the last German winter.

Next in issue #5, In “Soldiers of the Reich”, Stiles and his crew are going Tiger-hunting, which is all very well so long as your intended prey has no idea you’re coming. But the last days of the Third Reich prove to be a savage time, and as British and Waffen SS tanks stalk each other through the wretched gloom of the German winter, tragedy is never far away.

Next in issue #6, In “Kingdom of Dust”, Sergeant Stiles’ hatred of the Nazis has got him right where he wants to be: sitting behind a high-velocity cannon with a mighty German tank in his sights. But Tigers are never more dangerous than when they’re cornered, and the Panzer crew will be only too happy to take their enemies with them. The cat and mouse battle is fought to the finish, as the second Battlefields arc concludes with a bang.

Next in issue #7, Lieutenant Anna Kharkova is posted to single-seat fighter aircraft and sent straight into action. Hardened and embittered by the loss of her comrades, Anna is only too keen to get her teeth into the enemy- but with Russian and German armies about to collide in the titanic battle of Kursk, her first flight with her new squadron may well be her last. And once the Soviet secret police start sniffing around, death in battle may well be preferable anyway…

Next in issue #8, Dreadful losses for Anna’s squadron result in the one thing she doesn’t want: promotion. But as vast aerial armadas clash above the battlefield, and hundreds of pilots are swept away in a storm of blood and bullets, our heroine finds something even more unexpected- when she begins to fall in love.

Finally in issue #9, Horrific losses land Anna with the very last thing she wants: more responsibility, in the shape of eight young replacement pilots to be trained for combat. But with the Battle of Kursk reaching its climax, rookies are nothing but lambs to the slaughter – and even the most experienced pilots find themselves flying on borrowed time. The former Night Witch meets her destiny, as Motherland- and the second series of Battlefields – conclude with a bang.
