Bernie Wrightson (October 27, 1948 – March 18, 2017) was an American artist, known for co-creating the Swamp Thing, his adaptation of the novel Frankenstein illustration work, and for many other comics and illustrations, which feature his trademark intricate pen and brushwork. Throughout his career, Wrightson has illustrated for comics, books, album covers, trading cards, collectible card games, posters, portfolios, prints, as well as provided concept art for various films and television series. One of the most popular comic book illustrators in the industry, Bernie Wrightson’s stylized artwork has won him world-wide recognition and a “cult” fan following. Of which I am one.

The Reaper of Love and other stories (Fantagraphics Books, 1988) is a collection of Bernie Wrightson’s early fanzine and magazine work from 1966 to 1971. Before his groundbreaking work on Swamp Thing, Bernie (or as he originally spelled it, “Berni”) Wrightson was one of the rising stars in a new generation of artists that emerged in the late 1960s. This group, which also included Jeff Jones, Mike Kaluta, Bruce Jones, Richard Corben and Frank Brunner, were influenced by the high-quality work of the EC Comics of the early 1950s and by the reigning dean of fantasy art, Frank Frazetta. This group all arrived on the scene around the same time, originally working in fanzines, Warren’s EC-like horror magazines, and for Joe Orlando’s mystery-suspense books (House of Mystery, House of Secrets) at DC. The obsessive attention to detail in Wrightson’s art won him enormous acclaim. His “Swamp Thing” stories for DC and his illustrations for Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein have all been widely Reprints. The Reaper of Love and Other Stories collects much earlier and more obscure work in this attractive 144-page trade paperback. A real treasure for any serious Bernie Wrightson collector and/or enthusiast.
