Bernie Wrightson was an American artist, known for co-creating the Swamp Thing, his adaptation of the novel Frankenstein illustration work, and for his other horror comics and illustrations, which feature his trademark intricate pen and brushwork. Wrightson began his career as an illustrator for The Baltimore Sun newspaper in 1966. In 1968, he was hired by DC Comics and was a regular artist on the House of Mystery and House of Secrets horror titles. Wrightson and writer Len Wein created Swamp Thing in House of Secrets #92 (July 1971). The character soon received its own monthly series, for which Wrightson drew the first ten issues. In 1974, Wrightson began working for Warren Publishing magazines. Wrightson illustrated adaptations of works by well-known horror writers, including “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe and “Cool Air” by H. P. Lovecraft. He drew comic book adaptations of Stephen King’s screenplay for Creepshow in 1982, which led to several more collaborations with King. Wrightson spent several years creating an illustrated edition of Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, which was released in 1983. Later in his career, Wrightson provided concept art for various films and television series. Bernie Wrightson’s work in comics and animation has won him world-wide recognition and a “cult” fan following. Of which I am one.

Bernie Wrightson’s Freak Show has a varied publishing history. First published as a serial in Heavy Metal magazine in 1982, it was subsequently published in graphic novel format in France, Spain, Denmark, and the Netherlands just to name a few. Image Comics also published multiple editions.

This Limited Deluxe Edition Hardcover edition was printed in the Netherlands in 1997. It reprints the interior artwork very nicely on high quality paper in Glorious Black & White. The text is all in English. It also includes all of Bernie’s illustrations for Stephen King’s The Stand plus the portrait of Randall Flagg that was only included in the limited-edition portfolio. Additionally, this edition contains The “Incomplete” Bernie Wrightson Checklist, a small color reproduction of the painting “The Meltification of the Fish.” AND a beautiful Bernie Wrightson limited book plate. An informative and “quaint” Bernie Wrightson Checklist that barely scratches the surface of the legend’s bibliography, paintings, prints, portfolios, etc. Especially a checklist from a book printed in 1997. None the less, very interesting for the Bernie Wrightson enthusiasts.

Reprinting Stephen King’s The Stand Portfolio with artwork by Bernie Wrightson. The portfolio was Limited to 1200. The Stand is a post-apocalyptic dark fantasy novel written by American author Stephen King and first published in 1978 by Doubleday and has been subsequently re-published in multiple varied forms by different publishers. The Stand has also been adapted to television in the, The Stand (1994 miniseries) and The Stand (2020 miniseries). The plot centers on a deadly pandemic of weaponized influenza and its aftermath, in which the few surviving humans gather into factions that are each led by a personification of either good or evil and seem fated to clash with each other. This hard cover reprints all 12 plates of the portfolio, plus an additional plate of the portrait of Randall Flagg that was only included in the limited-edition portfolio.
