Description
Beyond Mars Comics Lot
Writer: Jack Williamson
Artist: Lee Elias
All Covers by: Lee Elias
In 1952 the New York News wanted to celebrate their success from a steady increase in newspaper circulation and decided an exclusive feature created for their publication would be just the ticket… It is said Chester Gould suggested many of the story lines and helped Williamson from time to time on a proper way to present a comic strip plot. This lively eye-catching space-opera drama with a stellar Dick Tracy feel was beautifully rendered in the “Noel Sickles School” by Elias with its amazingly detailed exotic locals, amusing alien creatures, beautiful women and lots of two-fisted action. But as with many strips over time, the New York News believed their creation did not live up to its expectations and cut the size to a half-page in late 1954, which probably contributed to its untimely demise on March 13, 1955 as the creative team wrapped up some final loose ends in the last Sunday.
Now Blackthorne Publishing presents, Beyond Mars. A five-issue mini-series collecting Jack Williamson & Lee Elias lively space-opera comic strip drama… all in Glorious Black & White. Classic science fiction for the serious science fiction enthusiasts. Headquartered on Brooklyn Rock, in the new frontier of the asteroid belt during the year 2191, freelance pilot Mike Flint steered his antimatter-powered craft across the universe by counteracting the pull of gravity on other solar systems. Although Flint held a license as a spatial engineer, he became more of an outer space policeman, often getting an assist from several alien sidekicks.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, In the 22nd century, pilot and spatial engineer Mike Flint have light-hearted adventures on the Asteroid Belt. Mike and his Venusian sidekick, Tham Thmith, investigate interplanetary malfeasance on The Diamond Asteroid.
Next in issue #2, Mike and his sidekick, a Venusian with a lisp, match wits with Buck Bullard, Space Pirate, and encounter the space anomaly known as the Death Rock.
Next in issue # 3, The conclusion of the Death Rock adventure; A mysterious drug called star dust leaves human wreckage scattered across the solar system.
Next in issue #4, Out amongst the stars, Mike and Tham Thmith encounter Fireproof Jones and Trish OKeefe, a beautiful and strong-minded woman.
Finally in issue #5, A mad plot to hijack an entire city brings Mike back to Earth; Mike and Tham Thmith encounter the brilliant Dr. Moray.
