Brigade is a team of super-heroes funded by two wealthy brothers, Coldsnap and Seahawk, who take an active part in their investment. Battlestone, formerly the leader of the Youngblood team, heads Brigade. Atlas, a giant; Kayo, an archer; and two women: Thermal, who can throw fire, and Stasis, who can create anti-motion force fields, round out the team. Not sanctioned by the government, these vigilantes nevertheless manage to find situations which challenge their skills and teamwork.
Stories/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Sabotage!”, Battlestone is jogging along his beachside Malibu HQ, when he encounters the brothers Seahawk and Coldsnap fighting. Battlestone quickly breaks up the tussle when a Code Red comes in from D.C. Terrorists have taken over a building, threatening to blow it up. With Youngblood nowhere to be seen, Stone decides he and his team should take action. Brigade makes short work of the terrorists, but no explosives are found. Suddenly an unaccounted for terrorist appears and leads Stone on a chase. When captured, he reveals that he is the bomb, and detonates. The team, safely away, fear Battlestone has perished in the explosion, but he rises safely from the building’s wreckage. All of this has transpired with a running commentary by an unknown party. With Battlestone’s survival, the observer is revealed to be an alien named Genocide. He concludes that this Brigade will make worthy opponents for his might, and instructs his ship to head for Earth.
Includes bound-in “Brigade” Trading Cards! Awesome!!
Next in issue #2, “Eve of Destruction”, The alien Genocide is wreaking destruction on the streets of Los Angeles, demanding that Brigade challenge him. When the team does arrive, Genocide shows off his knowledge of the various members, taking them down one by one. Battlestone appears to get the upper hand, however, knocking Genocide out. But as the team debates what to do with the alien, Genocide revives and renews his attack, although with his universal translator now damaged Brigade can no longer understand him. When Brigade continues to humiliate him, Genocide resorts to toppling a building in order to distract them. Atlas props it up, but moments later he and the rest of Brigade vanish in a flash of light, and the building collapses. Genocide believes Brigade to have been killed in the collapse, but soon he too is beamed away. Brigade now finds themselves in an arena on Genocide’s homeworld.
Includes bound-in “Brigade” Trading Cards! Awesome!!
Next in issue #3, “Battlefront”, In the arena, Genocide’s people attack Brigade en masse. The team manages a brief escape when Thermal blasts a hole through the ground, leading them into a sewer. Unfortunately, a gruesome monster inhabits those tunnels. A short fight later, though, and the team is back on the surface. Immediately the team is attacked again, this time by a trio called The Factor. Although The Factor have orders to bring Brigade to the Magistrate, Battlestone refuses to be taken alive. But just as the final blow is about to be struck, the fight is interrupted by the arrival of the freedom fighters, Birds of Prey.
Includes bound-in “Brigade” Trading Cards! Awesome!!
Finally in issue #4, “Brigade”, Although the Birds of Prey have just saved Brigade from The Factor, Battlestone is reluctant to trust the newcomers. He is left with little choice, though, when the imperial guard finds them yet again. Fighting through the imperial forces, the two teams are led back towards the citadel, where Genocide is waiting for them. Genocide challenges Battlestone to a one-on-one match, which he exacts by opening the floor and dropping himself and Stone into The Pit. The two combatants do not fight alone for long, for soon Brigade and the Birds of Prey burst through a wall to join in. Nevertheless, Battlestone insists on fighting Genocide himself, and leaves the teams to take care of the guards. Genocide, however, attempts a sneak attack against Stone, which misses and hits Atlas instead, killing him. In a fury Battlestone pummels Genocide, but Talyn stops him just short from killing the prince. The surviving members of Brigade board a ship and barely manage to escape the citadel, heading for open space, and Earth. Three months later, a couple of men at the Pentagon wonder as to Brigade’s disappearance. If they should reappear, though, the order will be given to send the Bloodstrike team after them.
