Bruce Lee was an American-born Chinese martial artist, instructor, actor, filmmaker and founder of the Jeet Kune Do martial arts system. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and famous martial artists of all time. He is considered by many to be the greatest martial artist of all time. Bruce Lee is also widely considered as the father of mixed martial arts.
Malibu Comics presents the 6-issue Bruce Lee comic book miniseries about a “fictional” Bruce Lee character striving his way through gangs and building a movie career. Although the story was a purely fictional adventure and the “comic” character had little in common with the real-life Bruce Lee, the comic series has been praised by Bruce Lee fans for being the “only” Bruce Lee comic book in North America. It was written by Mike Baron (who had previously written three comic stories for NOW Comics’ range of Green Hornet comic books about the version of Kato played by Lee on the 1966 television series) and drawn by Val Mayerik (who had drawn the second Kato miniseries). Includes an 8 page Mortal Combat story making it a 40 page martial arts thriller!
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “One Inch Punch”, With the help of his companions and his students, Bruce Lee has successfully established his own dojo, the American Academy of Jeet Kune Do. To make matters more eventful, Bruce’s dojo operates directly across from Ace Zeppelin’s dojo…
Next in issue #2, “Full Contact”, Bruce’s suspicions that Ace Zeppelin – the quintessential anti-hero – deals with less-than-virtuous “nutritional enhancements” prove correct. While Ace may have some explaining to do. Bruce must also answer to the police: How did a strange guy, wearing an American Academy of Jeet Kune Do shirt, end up dead in Bruce’s dojo… and from an apparent drug overdose…?
Next in issue #3, “Tinseltown Rebellion”, T. J. Bryce, Ace Zeppelin’s “sidekick” is dead. So naturally, Ace is wanted for murder (again). But before the police can get to Ace, Bruce Lee triumphs at the shootfighting championships and inadvertently renders Ace comatose in the process. Also, Stickman saves a street kid named Fabio from the hands of the Dexter Street Treys, the local Uzi wielding chapter of gangbangers. Another confrontation with the Treys is inevitable. In show business, Bruce makes the impression to end all first impressions (and second ones, as well). “Rolo” Pendergast, the move producer, and Sheldon, Bruce Lee’s friend, plan to pave Bruce’s way to stardom.
Next in issue #4, “The Word on the Street”, Bruce and Sheldon finally meet action-movie extraordinaire and extraordinary jerk, Stefan Patrese. On the school front, the Dexter Street Treys attack Bruce’s studio – mere moments after Bruce welcomes Fabio as a new student. When Bruce suggests that the school shut down until “gang business blows over,” students wonder: Has Bruce’s new movie career become more important to him than his students? On film location of the “Black Scorpion,” Bruce befriends the young girl Marti and her mother, Caitlin-Thomas. Caitlin, the film’s female lead, just ended a relationship with stuntman Joe Dorgan. Since Dorgan makes hostile demands, insults Bruce, and suffers from denial, Bruce may have to do some attitude adjusting…
Next in issue #5, “The Avenging Dragon”, On film location of “Black Scorpion,” Bruce Lee dices up Joe Dorgan a bit. Stickman and Mr. Chin, meanwhile conduct a crash course in introduction to philosophy through Flower Arrangement. When the Treys attack Bruce’s dojo, Stefan gets hurt – but his injury turns out to be a wonderful thing.
Finally in issue #6, “Wrap Party”, Filming of “The Avenging Dragon” commences in Mexico. Suddenly, shooting is stalled. According to Director Dal Lazlo, they’ve run out of film! That gives Bruce and Glynis a chance to go horseback riding and consequently, get acquainted with El General: “a mysterious figure who owns most of the land north of the village” and fights bulls with his bare hands. Turns out, Joe Dorgan and El General work together! When Dorgan threatens Glynis, Bruce must take the beating. And right before Dorgan does in Bruce, El General intervenes… and offers Bruce “a chance at honor… like the Bull.”
