Originally created to be a darker version of Venom, Carnage was once a serial killer known as Cletus Kasady who became the deadly killer symbiote after merging with the offspring of the alien symbiote called Venom during a prison breakout. Since the alien symbiote adapts to the host’s personality, the Carnage symbiote is affected by Kasady’s insane mind and lust for destruction… making it even more dangerous. Carnage is usually considered as a “main” enemy of Spider-Man. The character first appeared as Cletus Kasady in The Amazing Spider-Man #344 (March 1991) and then as Carnage in The Amazing Spider-Man #360 (March 1992). Carnage was created by writer David Michelinie and artists Erik Larsen and Mark Bagley, based on elements of the precursor character Venom. Along with Venom, Carnage belongs to a race of amorphous extraterrestrial parasites known as the Symbiotes.
Carnage is widely considered one of the Greatest Comic Book Villains of All Time!
Now, Marvel Comics Presents, Carnage! Exit Cletus Kasady and enter Dr. Tanis Nieves as the new female Carnage. The deadliest foe of Spider-Man is back! Web-Head teams up with Iron Man against a bloodthirsty force of evil and an army of super-powered menaces! The alien symbiote so twisted and murderous that it made Venom look like a choir boy has been brought back from space…but how? And without the without the psychopathic serial killer Cletus Kasady as its host, will Carnage be less dangerous…or more unhinged?! Don’t miss the villainous threat that will test these two Avengers teammates to the limit of their strength – if it doesn’t kill them!
Story/Spoilers:
In issue #1, An armored truck is being chased by a sedan with Doppelganger, a duplicate of Spider-Man, following from above. At the same time at a Medical Supply Expo attended by Tony Stark, Michael Hall, a computer manufacturer, shows the crowd a new kind of prosthetic arm that is controlled by a chip that functions by reading thoughts. Stark leaves at the end of the presentation and, wondering how Hall could pull off this technology, calls Pepper Potts and asks her to gather information on all of his companies. Suddenly, he sees Doppelganger and the car chase and changes into his Iron Man armor. Then, he calls Peter Parker, currently trying to enjoy his down time, and tells him to meet him on the West Side Highway. As Iron Man follows after the three of them, Doppelganger lands on top of the armored truck, bringing it to a halt. Iron Man orders him to surrender, but is instead covered in webs, allowing Doppelganger a chance to escape. Spider-Man arrives shortly after and, based on Iron Man’s description of the enemy, realizes that they are after Doppelganger and recalls the mayhem that occurred when he last saw him working with Carnage and other villains, including Shriek, who has the ability to make people form rioting mobs and kill others. Then, a mob attacks and surrounds them and the armored truck. A woman leaves the sedan and tells Doppelganger to stop the truck. As Spider-Man and Iron Man deal with the mob, two men in advanced armor calling themselves Royal Blue and Firebrick trap the crowd with a red webbing. Then, Royal Blue fires an energy blast at Doppelganger as he tries to get the backdoor of the armored truck open, but the woman jumps in front of the blast, blowing off her arm and ripping Doppelganger in half. Iron Man goes to the woman’s side and Spider-Man watches Doppelganger die. The mob is also freed from their mind control. Iron Man asks Royal Blue what was in the armored truck. That night, the armored truck is revealed to be carrying Shriek. She is taken to an unknown location and brought to a room with a giant glass bubble containing the Carnage symbiote and is expected to feed it with her powers.
Features/Includes Limited 1 for 10 Variant Cover #1C by Clayton Crain. Awesome!!
Next in issue #2, Witness the violent rebirth of Carnage. Shriek’s psychiatrist, Dr. Tanis Nieves, lost her arm in a friendly fire incident from Hall’s armored security team. With revolutionary prosthetic technology, similar to his men’s biosynthetic armor, Hall had Nieves fitted with an artificial arm… made from a sample of the Carnage Symbiote, which Hall retrieved from space and harvested for his inventions! The symbiote in Tanis’ arm quickly possessed her and turned/transformed Dr. Tanis into an all-new Carnage!
Next in issue #3, Tanis Nieves recalls the time she was six and found a three-legged, one-eyed dog, which her parents wanted to put down. She fights them on it and they decide to let her keep it. The Carnage symbiote recalls the time Cletus Kasady killed his mother’s dog. Tanis tries to stop the symbiote from taking over her mind and then recalls graduating college, hoping to help the insane. Another of Cletus’s memories is of him burning down the Estes School for Boys. Tanis, still hoping to fight off the symbiote, remembers refusing to give Shriek Thorazine, an anti-psychotic drug because she doesn’t put “patients to sleep.” The Carnage symbiote remembers Cletus using Shriek to kill others and planning to kill her when he was bored of her. Tanis tries desperately to stop it from taking over her mind as it has already taken control of her body, which is currently tearing apart Hall Industries. Somewhere else, two scientists are looking over the dead body of Doppelganger when an alarm goes off. They abandon the body and leave without putting it back in the freezer. His arm begins to thaw. Outside Hall Industries, Spider-Man and Iron Man follow after Michael Hall’s men when Spider-Man realizes that his spider-sense isn’t working despite the blaring alarm, meaning a symbiote is blocking it. Royal Blue comes crashing up from underground with Carnage following shortly after. Spider-Man is horrified when he initially thinks it’s Cletus Kasady, but Royal Blue tells him that Cletus is dead and it’s Dr. Tanis Nieves that’s inside it. In the Research and Development Lab, two men try to bring Shriek back to her quarters but she refuses to go anywhere without her psychiatrist, Dr. Tanis. Meanwhile, Doppelganger continues to thaw and his arm starts to move. Spider-Man, Iron Man try to fight Carnage but it flies away. The two men drag Shriek to her quarters, but before they can get her there, Doppelganger is found crawling on the wall. They shoot and brutally beat him in an attempt to kill him. This drives Shriek over the edge and, in retaliation, shrieks loud enough to kill them, reminding her how much fun it is. Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Hall’s men track Carnage to a sewer, which leads Royal Blue to believe that it is hunting down Hall for revenge. They reach Hall before Carnage does, but he tells him that it’s not after him, but, in fact, is trying to return to its original host, Cletus Kasady, who had been kept alive by the symbiote and held in containment by Hall. When it finds him, now with his entire lower body replaced with prosthetics, it leaves Tanis and begins to bond with him.
Next in issue #4, Carnage goes on a rampage while searching for Michael Hall, who sends in his men to stop him. However, the pieces of symbiote inside their armor prevent them from moving and they are merged with Carnage before Spider-Man and Iron Man can save them. They then start to fight. At Hall Industries, Shriek and Doppelganger find Tanis Nieves and discover that she is carrying Carnage’s baby, which is growing on her prosthetic arm. Tanis begs Shriek for help, saying that it is trying to take control of her mind, but she refuses. The symbiote continues to ask Tanis to feed it and Shriek tells her to accept her responsibility. Tanis grabs a piece of glass and tears her prosthetic arm off. Shriek picks it up and claims it for herself. Meanwhile, as they continue to fight, Iron Man slams a vehicle on top of Carnage. Just as he recovers, Doppelganger and Shriek, now bonded with the symbiote, appear.
Finally in issue #5, While Michael Hall is being flown to safety, Shriek and Doppelganger reunite with Carnage. Carnage continues to fight Spider-Man and Iron Man. Meanwhile, Tanis Nieves awakens to a riot of people being controlled by Shriek. She feels ashamed that she wouldn’t let them put her on medication after seeing what it has caused. Iron Man attempts to take control of the suits Carnage has merged with by inject a virus into them but his suit ends up getting data from Carnage, forcing him to abort. Shriek holds Tanis with her new symbiote and shows her what she’s done to the rioters. Her screaming frightens the symbiote and it leaves her. Tanis gives in and allows the symbiote to bond with her, turning her into Scorn. Gripping Shriek by the neck, Scorn forces her to shriek, which knocks Carnage to the ground. Iron Man and Spider-Man use this opportunity to break open the suit, but when they do, they find that Carnage had escaped. Tanis drags Shriek, who is unconscious, by the hair and tells them about the dog she had as a child. Her parents wanted to put it down but she wouldn’t let them and it ended up biting her brother in the face. She realizes that some things have to be put down, including Shriek. In the aftermath, Spider-Man and Iron Man searched for Carnage but the trail had run cold. Shriek is in a coma and it is unknown if she will wake up. Tanis is put into Iron Man’s care in hopes that Scorn can help them find Carnage. At an unknown location, Cletus hides out with Doppelganger and holds Michael Hall prisoner while he plans his comeback.
