Description
Chamber of Darkness #4 Comic
And the Monster Man came Walking… Walking…
Editor: Stan Lee
Cover by: Marie Sevein & Bill Everett
Chamber of Darkness is a horror/fantasy anthology comic book published by the American company Marvel Comics. Under this and a subsequent name, it ran from 1969 to 1974. It featured work by creators such as writer-editor Stan Lee, writers Gerry Conway, Archie Goodwin, and Roy Thomas, and artists John Buscema, Johnny Craig, Jack Kirby, Tom Sutton, Barry Windsor-Smith (as Barry Smith), and Bernie Wrightson. Stories were generally hosted by either of the characters Digger, a gravedigger, or Headstone P. Gravely, in undertaker garb, or by one of the artists or writers. After the eighth issue, the title changed to Monsters on the Prowl, and the comic became almost exclusively a reprint book.
Chamber of Darkness #4 presents the stories; “The Monster” – A wealthy, ugly, and lonely man is believed to be a monster by the ignorant people of his village. “The Man Who Owned the World” – A greedy billionaire crashes the world economy to finance a scientist to send him into the future, where a horrible surprise awaits him. And “The Sword and the Sorcerers!” – Novelist Len Carson plans to write one final story in his popular sword and sorcery series to kill off the protagonist, Starr the Slayer, but his creation comes to life and kills him in self-defense.
Chamber of Darkness Issue #4 contains these stories:
“The Monster” 7 pages
Writer: Jack Kirby
Artist: Jack Kirby
Inker: John Verpoorten
Letterer: Artie Simek
An ugly man who lives alone is regarded with suspicion by the villagers. After a visit into town to pick up a music box, a mob gathers and follows him back to his home. They see a beautiful girl sitting still through a window and figure the monster must have her under some sinister spell. They break in and gun him down, only then noticing the girl is merely a mannequin. The man was merely a tragic hermit who had created his own world, while the villagers ended up being the monsters.

Writer: Roy Thomas
Artist: Barry Windsor-Smith
Letterer: Jean Simek
A writer who is selling barbarian stories of Starr the Slayer that come to him in dreams plans to kill off Starr in the next story because the dreams are putting too much of a strain upon his health.
