Conan’s greatest adversary!
This essential piece of the Conan mythos chronicles the horrifying origin of Thoth-amon for the first time!
Thoth-amon was a wizard from the lands of Stygia who is also known as, “Thoth-amon of the Ring”. He is best known for crossing paths with Conan twice, first in the story “The God in the Bowl”, and again in the tale “The Phoenix on the Sword” (the very first Conan story written). He and Conan never meet face-to-face in any of Howard’s original stories; indeed, Conan only found himself involved in Thoth-Amon’s schemes by random chance. Moreover, in The Hour of the Dragon, Conan unintentionally does Thoth-Amon a big favor by going into Stygia and neatly disposing of a rival priest of Set who had intended to challenge Thoth-Amon’s power. Still, later writers would later depict Thoth-Amon as the Cimmerian’s arch-nemesis.
L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter, in their pastiche stories, made Thoth-amon the most prominent adversary of Conan. In the Marvel Comics series, Thoth-Amon was also Conan’s life-long opponent. He had a striking appearance designed by Barry Windsor-Smith, with a ram-horn ornamental headdress. In the Dark Horse Comics series, Thoth-Amon is also an important character, but with a more traditional Stygian (Egyptian-looking) appearance.
The most powerful of all Stygian sorcerers, Thoth-Amon was born into poverty. However, his insatiable greed and lust for power drove him to delve into forbidden knowledge. In dark, forgotten scrolls Thoth-Amon learned of the lost kingdom of Acheron. Desiring its power for himself, he made his way to the site of Acheron. It was here that the serpent god Set tested him. Thoth-Amon died, or nearly died, but was revived by the Black Ring of Set. With the Black Ring’s power, Thoth-Amon rose quickly to become one of the most terrifying sorcerers of the Hyborian Age.
Various Stories featuring the character Thoth-Amon:
“The God in the Bowl”
“The Phoenix on the Sword”
“The Hour of the Dragon”
The Treasure of Tranicos (added by Sprague deCamp, Not in the original or in some later versions)

“Witch of the Mists”
“Black Sphinx of Nebthu”
“Red Moon of Zembabwei”

Conan the Invincible by Robert Jordan

Witness the dreaded sorcerer Thoth-Amon’s rise from the squalor of the streets through the priestly ranks of Ibis to the heights of evil!
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “The Serpent Slumbers”, In the dark alleys of a decaying city, one beggar boy conjures visions of a future where, instead of spitting on him in the streets, the rich and privileged cower in fear of his terrible power. For young Thoth, hunger and pain is a way of life, twisting his heart into believing that no wickedness is too costly if it can afford a means of escape-not even the betrayal of one’s sole confidant in the wretched, unfeeling world.
Next in issue #2, “The Serpent Stirs”, The young acolyte Thoth-amon rises quickly through the priestly ranks of Ibis as one by one his fellows fall victim to grisly deaths by an unseen hand. Bewildered and powerless to halt the carnage, one priest fears he has discovered the source of the evil encroaching upon the city, only to learn that the truth is far more horrifying than anyone could have imagined. Meanwhile, the citizens of Memphia are losing faith in the ability of Ibis to protect them, and rumors are spreading of a far more powerful and ancient deity-the snake-god Set.
Next in issue #3, “The Serpent Rises”, The dread power of Thoth-Amon achieves devastating new heights as the young sorcerer sets in motion a plan to place the kingdom of Stygia within his serpentine grip. Having ingratiated himself to a weak-willed heir to the crown, Thoth undertakes the systematic elimination of any who would stand in the way of the fool’s assent to the throne. Yet, there is one in the Order of Ibis who grows suspicious of Thoth’s solicitous relations with the prince and the increasing amount of royal blood mysteriously spilt. Will this young priest discover the truth about Thoth in time to save the King, or will the snake-god Set sink its fangs into the last, best hope for peace in a war-torn land?
Finally in issue #4, “The Serpent Strikes”, Ancient evil dawns upon the land of Stygia in this horrifying conclusion to the origin of Conan’s greatest adversary, Thoth-Amon! After a lifetime of scheming plots, bloody rituals, and murderous betrayals, Thoth-Amon achieves his dark destiny as a dreaded sorcerer of the snake-god Set, and his ultimate display of power will devastate a nation and test the will of those dedicated to protecting a world lost and broken. It is the birth of a darkness beyond reckoning, and an unexpected finale to a story that has permanent ramifications for the Conan mythos!
Based on the work of Conan creator, Robert E. Howard.
