The Road of Kings is a fantasy novel written by Karl Edward Wagner featuring Robert E. Howard’s sword and sorcery hero Conan the Barbarian. It was first published in paperback by Bantam Books in October 1979. Later paperback editions were issued by Ace Books (1987) and Tor Books 2001. The first trade paperback edition was published by Warner Books in 1989. The first British edition was published by Sphere Books (1986, reissued 1989). Aside from the Bantam and Tor editions all other editions were issued under the variant title Conan: The Road of Kings.
“Road of Kings” features Conan during his buccaneering days. He becomes involved in thwarting a plot to take over the turbulent kingdom of Zingara, complicated by sorcery rooted in the long lost realm of Acheron. But will Conan be tempted to take the Zingaran throne for himself?
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, The pirate world is about to get 100 percent more savage as Conan and his crew of brigands ravage the seas in search of treasure and glory. But when the beautiful Olivia appears aboard one of the captured ships and starts speaking of prophetic dreams and king’s fortunes, Conan and his crew head in another direction-one that leads straight to the Road of Kings!
Features Variant of issue #1 by Dale Keown.
Next in issue #2, Being a warrior on the road of kings will only get you so far; you’ll also need plenty of gold to keep you going. Luckily, Conan is skilled at separating the wealthy from their spare treasure! But when he discovers a pit of gold, he may have met his match in the form of a tentacled horror intent on killing any intruders!
Next in issue #3, When Conan finds a nice out-of-the-way tavern to leave his female companion, Olivia, for a few hours, he imagines she’ll be safe under the watchful eye of the dancing wench he paid to watch her. Unfortunately, Olivia has a big mouth when she’s drinking and news that she’s royalty turns the safe oasis into a watery death trap-seeing as how the tavern is conveniently situated over the top of an underground lake that is home to a prehistoric water dragon!
Next in issue #4, On his way to deliver stolen state secrets, Conan is abducted by the King of Nemedia and asked to turn over the name of the accomplice who sent him on this errand. Conan’s loyalty is strong, but will it be strong enough to overcome the Nemedian inquisitor who will stop at nothing to force Conan to reveal all he knows? Bound and tortured-if Conan is able to escape, he may not be able to catch up to the beautiful Olivia, who has been kidnapped by the dastardly Fharos!
Next in issue #5, Conan has been in trouble before, but never like this! It may just be the end of the line for everyone’s favorite barbarian! Join Conan as he braves Ophir’s golden court as he tries to save Olivia from the power of the mystic ring known as the Star of Khorala. Conan will need both luck and skill if he’s to escape the axe of Ophir’s savage executioner!
Next in issue #6, The dangers keep stacking up against Conan as he travels down the Road of Kings. If he wants to continue on his journey, Conan will need to defeat a deadly executioner, a mystic royal astrologer, and the evil and deadly razor-handed Gamesh! Chapter 6 of Conan’s voyage along the Road of Kings is one you won’t want to miss!
Next in issue #7, “Of Princes and Plotters”, Will Conan’s first sight of Aquilonia also be his last? The Cimmerian gets caught up in the nets of Hyborian Age treason-and so does one whom he considers the most innocent victim of all. The journey down the Road of Kings continues!
Next in issue #8, “The Horrors beneath the Stones “, In underground catacombs beneath Aquilonia’s capital, a desperate Conan fights to protect himself-and a young child-from creatures more hideous and deadly than anything he’s ever encountered on the surface. The Road of Kings is no place for weaklings!
Next in issue #9, “When Death takes Wing…”, Beneath the city of Tarantia, Conan, his allies, and the child in his care are at the mercy of a horde of zombie Hyborians, while above their heads an even greater menace reveals itself! If they survive the catacombs, can Conan and his charges withstand a siege of the city?
Next in issue #10, “Is Tarantia Burning?”, With Tarantia under siege, Conan just wants to get out of town, but the promise of a reward wins out. Drafted into an assassination plot, the Cimmerian becomes part of the struggle over who will rule Aquilonia, while still protecting the mother and child in his care. But when the plan falls apart, Conan finds himself up against both an army and the palace dragon!
Next in issue #11, “A Cimmerian In Argos”, In need of money after escaping war-torn Tarantia, Conan finds his way to a seaport called Messantia. There he wastes no time in finding old allies and making new enemies. With a friend on the wrong side of the law and Conan himself on the wrong side of the local criminals, all the pieces are in place for Road of Kings’s blowout conclusion!
Finally, in issue #12, “Conan’s Day In Court”, Conan’s journey on the Road of Kings concludes, as the Cimmerian finds himself at the end of every sword in a small port city. Once again betrayed by the hypocrisy of civilized men, Conan must embrace barbarism to fight his way free!
Roy Thomas, the man who brought Robert E. Howard to comics, returns to Conan!
