Description
Giant-Size Conan the Barbarian #2 Comic
An Annual collection of the World’s Most Savage Adventures.
Cover by: John Buscema
Giant-size Conan the Barbarian was a short series that appeared in 1974 and ended the next year in 1975. Instead of telling a single story, each comic book would contain 2-3 stories, creating a sort of Conan anthology. Instead of having to follow a long story, the charm of the comic was that readers could pick up any issue and jump into a Conan story that requires little back story or lore understanding to enjoy.
Writer: Roy Thomas
Artist: Gil Kane
Inker: Tom Sutton
Colorist: Glynis Wein
Letterer: G.P. Lisa
Editor: Roy Thomas
Xaltotun takes Conan to Tarascus’ palace in Belverus. Xaltotun proposes to let the Cimmerian hold on to the Aquilonian crown in exchange for his allegiance, but Conan will have none of it, stating that his chief lieutenants, Count Trocero and Prospero, will hold the Aquilonian capital, Tarantia. Xaltotun has Conan locked away in a dungeon cell. Conan is rescued by Zenobia, a slave girl who fell in love with him years before when he rode through Belverus. She gives him a key to unlock his chains and a dagger, but was not able to steal the key to the main door, so Conan has to find a way out through the dreaded pits. While searching for a way out, he meets and kills a gray ape. Conan meets up with Zenobia and she starts to lead him out of the palace. On the way, Conan chances upon Tarascus talking to a ruffian. Tarascus tells the man that because he fears Xaltotun’s power he has stolen the Heart of Ahriman and bids him to throw the gem into the sea. After the ruffian departs, Conan attacks Tarascus, wounds him, and Tarascus runs out of the room and raises the alarm. Zenobia leads Conan to an exit, bids him farewell, and he makes good his escape. • Tarascus speaks with Orastes about the dual threats of Conan and Xaltotun. • Outside of Belverus, Conan finds a horse left for him by Zenobia. A Nemedian adventurer then confronts him, and Conan kills him.
Adapted from Hour of the Dragon (Conan the Conqueror), published by Robert E. Howard.

Traveling through a remote Zamorian village while returning to Shadizar, Conan ends up in the middle of a sorcerer’s tax collecting scam. The village has not paid its 40 pieces of gold, so the sorcerer sends a demon-tiger to collect. Conan battles, and loses against, the tiger, but it decides not to kill the barbarian and slinks off, changing into its true shape, a beautiful woman. The townsfolk tell Conan that she is the daughter of the sorcerer, Zukala. The girl, Zephra, returns to her father but for some reason is so pale and sickly she falls into her father’s arms. Meanwhile, Conan agrees to slay the sorcerer in return for a sword that had caught his eye. Conan sneaks into Zukala’s fortress and watches as the sorcerer summons a demon, Jaggta-Noga, to punish the villagers. Conan is discovered by Zephra, and explains her odd behavior — she saw a vision of her fated to love Conan, and Conan standing over her dead body. The two are interrupted by Zukala, who runs off when Conan shatters his mask, the source of his power. Enough of the mask remains for a few magical tricks, however, and commands his daughter to turn into the tigress and slay the Cimmerian. She refuses, however, but Jaggta-Noga returns to defend the wizard. Zephra leaps between demon and barbarian. Zephra is dealt a near-killing blow, and, horrified, Zukala sends the demon away. Zukala vanishes with his daughter, who, while still alive, is no longer as loyal to her father as she had been, and this saddens the sorcerer more than anything else. Conan takes the gold left behind, decides it’s payment enough, and continues to Shadizar.
Story Inspired by the Poem “Zukala’s Hour” written by Robert E. Howard creator of Conan.
