Description

Creepy Things #6                                  Comic
Editor: George Wildman
Cover by: Mike Zeck

Supernatural themed comics and other merchandise enjoyed a surge in popularity in the 1960s and 70s. Attempting to cash in on this trend, Charlton Comics released Creepy Things. With its spooky parade of mutant frogs, practitioners of Black Magic, vampires, and other strange creatures, this title promised to provide one of the scariest collections of stories available. Although the first issue did not have one, subsequent issues had a recurring narrator who set the mood for each tale. This was a common theme for “monster comics,” and carried over into more enduring titles like House of Mystery and Tales from the Crypt.

Creepy Things Issue #6 contains:
“The Vampire of Hanover”    7 pages
Writer: Pat Boyette
Artist: Pat Boyette

Taking place in Germany after World War 1, a distressed man tells his story of his horrific nightmares to a friendly librarian. The nightmares are about him transforming into a winged vampire-like creature. The librarian tells him that its ludicrous, and the distressed man transforms before his very eyes and kills him.

“The Star of Siva”    6 pages
Writer: Joe Gill
Artist: Rich Larson

A group of rugged men journey through the jungle to raid a temple of its treasure. When they reach the temple, they fall into a trap where they hallucinate a statue attacking them. The hallucination distracts them from the false floor, so when they pick up the treasure, they fall through and plummet to their deaths.

“The Hairy One”    9 pages
Writer: Joe Gill
Artist: Tom Sutton

And evil man who befriends tarantulas is secretly plaguing a jungle village. One night, he is caught in the act of releasing a wild animal into a neighbor’s home. The four men who caught him take him before the rest of the village and they decide to imprison him. While imprisoned, he mysteriously dies and transfers his soul to a tarantula, which quickly grows in size. However, the villagers are fierce warriors and even the massive tarantula isn’t a match. The tarantula reduces its size and attempts to escape into the jungle, but is crushed.
