Description
Dark Horse Presents: Aliens – Platinum Edition Trade Paperback
Cover by: Simon Bisley
Dark Horse Presents is an anthology series, each issue collecting several new short stories. Some stories are one shots while many span several issues.
Marvel has Marvel Comics Presents; DC had DC Comics Presents; and… Dark Horse Comics has…well, you can guess. Dark Horse Presents isn’t just a clone of the big two’s try-out books. For one, it’s published in a hefty black-and-white format, packing two or three times as many stories into each issue as any of its competitors. Also, the range of stories is, well, frankly amazing! A single issue may start with a terrible spoof of Dark Horse itself, move on to a gritty true-crime drama such as Sin City, switch over to a fairy tale adapted from Oscar Wilde, cut loose with a Predator tale, then return to part two of the spoof. Unbelievable! Good Stuff!!
Dark Horse Presents Aliens features all of the stand-alone stories from the past issues of Dark Horse Presents in one volume, and in color for the first time! This package includes stories by Mark Verheiden and Mark A. Nelson (DHP #24), Anina Bennett and Paul Guinan (DHP # 42-43), John Arcudi and Simon Bisley (DHP 5th Anniversary Special), and Arcudi, Guinan and Tony Akins (DHP #56). This volume is colored by Rachelle Menashe and Chris Chalenor. All wrapped up in a stunning new cover painting by Simon Bisley.
Dark Horse Presents Aliens – Platinum Edition contains:
“Theory of Alien Propagation”
Writer: Mark Verheiden
Artist: Mark A. Nelson
Colorist: Chris Chalenor
Story/Spoilers
The story is written in the form of an in-universe report by Aliens: Outbreak character Dr. Waidslaw Orona on the reproductive cycle of the Xenomorph, with accompanying imagery of Alien life and development. It shows Xenomorphs spreading via the impregnation of humans and other alien species, and also documents the creatures building one of their Hives, all accompanied by excerpts from Orona’s report.
——————————————————————————–
“Advent and Terminus”
Writers: Anina Bennett & Paul Guinan
Artist: Paul Guinan
Colorist: Rachelle Menashe
Letterer: Willie Schubert
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, “Advent”, The story features Wellington Frick, a wealthy neophyte explorer on hard times, his sex-synth, Belle, his mercenary bodyguard, Emil Zorn, and a story-hungry freelance news reporter named Posada who encounter Aliens during an expedition into an Egyptian-style Alien tomb on a distant, high prize-yielding planet with poignant results.
Finally in part #2, “Terminus”, The heart-racing conclusion of an extraterrestrial treasure hunting expedition gone wrong comes to a close as a vengeance-crazed cyborg leads the crew in a fight for survival.
——————————————————————————–
“Reapers”
Writer: John Arcudi
Artist: Simon Bisley
Colorist: Chris Chalenor
Story/Spoilers
This short action-heavy story focuses on an expedition by another alien species (presumably the “Reapers” of the story’s title) hunting an Alien hive, eventually facing its monstrous Queen. The Xenomorphs in the story, particularly the Queen, are shown to be much larger than the typical ones faced by humans, perhaps as a result of gestation in infected Reapers. In the end, it is revealed that on the Reaper homeworld, the Xenomorphs are a form of cuisine.
——————————————————————————–
“The Alien”
Writer: John Arcudi
Artists: Tony Akins & Paul Guinan
Inker: Paul Guinan
Colorist: Rachelle Menashe
Letterer: Willie Schubert
Story/Spoilers
The President of the United States and his ministers are called to Gateway Station, where they are appointed to meet with the Space Jockey who is orbiting Earth and reshaping the planet with a terraforming device. The meeting is actually an assassination attempt that helps free humanity from potential subjugation.
