Description

DC Archive Editions: Superman – Volume 4         Sealed Hardcover w/ Dust Jacket
Writer: Jerry Siegel
Artist: Joe Shuster
Cover by: Fred Ray

DC Archive Editions is a line of hardcover reprint runs of early, often rare comic book series, titles, and stories which ran from 1989-2014. They include more than 160 Golden Age and Silver Age comic properties currently owned by DC Comics, regardless of whether DC Comics was the original publisher. The series first published Superman Archives Vol. 1 in 1989. Most of the restoration work to make the pages suitable for quality printing has been done by Rick Keene, who has restored more than 2,500 pages.

The Man of Steel continues to defend America and explore spectacular locations in the fourth volume of the Superman Archives series. Introducing Clark Kent’s loyal sidekick, Jimmy Olsen, this book of 1940s classics features tales in which Superman discovers an underground civilization beneath Metropolis, goes on a disastrous rampage while under hypnosis, meets an alluring mermaid and visits the lost city of Atlantis, becomes trapped in the Fourth Dimension, protects American naval weapons from international saboteurs, and battles the deadly costumed villain the Archer.

Story/Spoilers
In part #1, Superman must battle Lex Luthor who is disguised as The Light, a criminal who kidnaps prominent men from many different fields, hypnotizes them with colored lights, and makes them do his bidding. And later, a new villain hits the front pages of Metropolis’ newspapers, a villain who prefers hunting human beings for profit rather than animals.

Next in part #2, When people who attend a concert at Monmouth Hall are robbed, seemingly without their knowledge, Clark and Lois attend the next evening’s concert to see if lightning strikes twice. Later, when young Chet Farnsworth’s invention, a fire extinguishing powder, is successfully used to put out a tenement fire, the young man hastily signs a contract with an unscrupulous man.

Next in part #3, Lois and Clark stand by and seek to assist Sgt. Branigan, who was blinded during a tussle with mobsters as well as being dismissed from the Police force for accidently killing a woman. Later, Superman discovers that Battleship Y-92 had been sabotaged by agents of the war-like nation of Napkan upon launching. And finally, Superman must battle the Evolution King, a man who has developed a way to advance or revert the ages of prominent athletes.

Finally in part #4, When Lois and Clark take slum kids out into the country for a day, editor White decides to have the Planet sponsor a fund-raising campaign to build a resort for the underprivileged children out in the country. Later, Superman has to respond to the threats made by a Mr. Sinister, who uses a special ray-cannon to transport buildings, including the Daily Planet, into the Fourth Dimension. And finally, Lois and Clark’s lives are nearly forfeit when they bear down in their newspaper articles about local racketeers who are demanding fees from every truck that unloads in Metropolis
