East Texas. 1876. The late stage was fighting its way across the countryside outside Mud Creek. It made a rest stop, and the boy riding shotgun went off into the bushes to do his business. That’s when he saw the spider… The next anyone saw of the stage, it was sitting – empty – in the middle of Mud Creek. Its former passengers now spent their days in root cellars and shallow graves – and walked by night.

The Reverend Jebediah Mercer had also come to town. An itinerant drunkard, he was selling redemption. He felt his mission was to save Mud Creek with a bible and a revolver. But he would soon learn that Mud Creek, an East Texas city of the Old West, had already earned its damnation.

Story/Spoilers (featuring the full Dead in the West 1986 Novel Synopsis for nostalgic remembrance)

The Reverend Jebediah Mercer rides into the town of Mud Creek, Texas. Little does he know that it is about to be attacked by an Indian medicine man who was unjustly lynched by the town inhabitants. Soon the dead will rise and seek human flesh and the Reverend finds himself right in the middle of it. He aligns himself with the town doctor and two of the town’s inhabitants, Abbey and David. Together they fight the zombie horde and try to dispatch the medicine man who is the cause of all the evil.
