Death Hawk is a space mercenary who will do jobs for just about anyone, as long as the price is right. He’s accompanied on these missions by his constant companion, a symbiotic protoplasm-creature named Cyke (who, despite appearances, often seems to possess more good sense than Death Hawk). As the story begins, Death Hawk is sent to retrieve an ancient artifact of unknown power. Unfortunately, he’s far from the only one interested in this artifact, and his competition includes everything from crooked thugs to a dangerous beauty armed with a nerve blaster. Death Hawk was created by Mark Ellis and Adam Hughes and is presented in Glorious Black & White with painted full color covers by Dave Dorman and Stephen Hickman. Death Hawk is Sci-Fi Action at its Best!!
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Dreams Alone”, In the late 25th century, nearly all trade, commerce and life is dominated by galaxy-spanning corporations. Into to this web of intrigue and violence comes Death Hawk – a mysterious ex-outlaw and mercenary for hire. Death Hawk gas been hired by BioTech, a corporation that produces artificial life-forms, to retrieve artifacts of the long-dead Skril race. Hawk and his protosymbiotic partner, Cyke, travel to the hostile Sikh to rescue Vanessa, Vanessa has been hired by a competing company. Nippon Interstellar, to retrieve the relics.
Next in issue #2, “To Enshrine the Past”, After Death Hawk recues her, Vanessa treacherously incapacitates Hawk and takes the artifact. Furious Death Hawk follows her to the Freeworld of Amicus and finds her in the company of an old adversary – R’lex, a ruthless Arcturan mercenary. Through a combination of trickery on the part of Hawk and Cyke (and stupidity on R’lex’s part), Vanessa is spirited off-planet . Vanessa claims that she doesn’t have the relic with her, and she refuses to divulge its whereabouts. Cyke, through a psionic mind scan, learns that Vanessa, in some mysterious manner, has absorbed the properties of the Skril artifact. In essence, she has become the artifact. Exasperated beyond endurance, Hawk takes her to Progenetrix, the planet that houses the corporate headquarters of BioTech.
Finally in issue #3, “Devil’s Playground”, While on Progenetrix, the planet that houses the corporate headquarters of BioTech, Death Hawk learns that the second part of the Skril artifact is located in the heavily guarded museum of a distant planet under a rebellion. Death Hawk and Cyke travel to the planet under a diplomatic disguise and proceed to break into the museum and steal the artifact. As they attempt to escape, they are captured by the rebels and forced to join the rebellion or die…
Collectible Entertainment comment: Death Hawk (1988) is an ill-fated title that was originally to have run for more than three issues is therefore an incomplete story w/ a cliffhanger ending issue #3 (Death Hawk was canceled after the third issue when the publisher went out of business. A fourth issue was completed, but went unpublished at the time.)… Nonetheless, it’s three issues of far-out sci-fi action from cover to interior. And the black and white artwork is awesome. It’s good stuff!!
