Death Race 2000 is a 1975 cult action film directed by Paul Bartel, and starring David Carradine, Simone Griffeth and Sylvester Stallone. Death Race 2000 was written by Robert Thom and Charles Griffith, and produced by Roger Corman. The film takes place in a dystopian American society in the year 2000, where the murderous Transcontinental Road Race has become a form of national entertainment.
In an alternate timeline of 1975, the oil crisis has caused mass panic and both the Republican and Democratic parties have collapsed into a single “Bipartisan Party” and the “United Provinces of America”, is formed and run by an authoritarian, totalitarian dictatorship, headed by a fictional “Mr. President” (Sandy McCallum), who is named president for life. In 1980, the Bipartisan Party created “the Annual Transcontinental Road Race”, a lethal coast-to-coast, three-day race. But the race’s points are not just scored for speed, but for the number of innocent pedestrians killed during the race.
Now, Roger Corman’s Cosmic Comics presents a comic book sequel of sorts based in part on the film Death Race 2000. The comic book, as the title indicates {Death Race 2020}, takes place 20 years after the film and deals with Frankenstein’s return to the race as well as introduces Von Dutch a new racer character.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Frankenstein Unchained”, As chronicled in the 1975 film “Death Race 2000,” the US government once authorized the annual Death Race, a transcontinental automobile race that awarded points to drivers for killing pedestrians. The winner of that race was a government-manufactured über-driver named Frankenstein, who had a change of heart and outlawed the race after he was declared President of the United States. This act made him entirely unpopular, and the nation erupted with urban violence, including a number of illegal Death Races. In order to stem the tide of the brutality, President Frankenstein takes his battle to the streets and begins taking out the aggressors—some of whom were bred in the same government laboratory that produced him.
Next in issue #2, “Bride Of Frankenstein”, Last issue gave the green light for The Inner City Slaughter… now The Inner City Slaughter race continues with more action, more bullets and more bloody death and if that were not enough… how about the death of Frankenstein’s beloved wife by assassination. Can anyone say, “Head Shot!”.
Next in issue #3, “Frankenstein Goes To Hollywood”, Spyda is fingered for the assassination of Frankenstein’s wife Anne, and we finally get to learn the awe-inspiring, majestic, and frankly disgusting origin of the Death Racers!
Next in issue #4, “Steppenwolf”, The first legal Death Race in 20n years begins, Frankenstein and Spyda will be racing against Rick Rhesus, Happy the Clown, Von Dutch, The Alcoholic, and Russia’s first Death Racer, the sorcerous, Satanic Steppenwolf! And Frankenstein will find that Steppenwolf is not racing for gold and glory – this is a race for America’s soul!
Next in issue #5, “Ramping”, Normally, when two cars hit each other head on, they simply crash… But a pair of Veteran Racers can “RAMP”…. They both travel exactly 82 mph… The “Ramp Car” slam on his brakes exactly one car’s length way… his nose dives…. Allowing the wheels of the other vehicle to mount the hood… The brake angle of the hood and the combined speed of 164-mph make the other car a flyer… so the Death Race is not confined to just death on the streets, but also, …. death from above!!
Next in issue #6, “Major Reservations”, If “Indestructiman” the armored, towering genius of Professor Irving Dunbar is shown no mercy and ravaged onto death, how do the peaceful, harmless, sentient dolphins stand a chance. Dolphin sandwich anyone?
Next in issue #7, “Dark Forces”, The body count rises and so does the dark forces of evil as the Death Racers murderously advance in the Deadly Death Race.
Finally, in issue #8, “Love Me Tender”, The two most patriotic organizations in America (circa 202) – the Marine Corps and F.E.A.R. (the Federation of Elvises Against the Race) – battle the Death Racers. The former are the tough-as-nails remnants of the once-mighty U.S. military machine. The latter are worshippers of “the King” who believe Death Racers are nothing less than false idols. Their combined power may be too much for the Death Racers, but they get help from an unexpected quarter – a new Death Racer! Novice racer Pete Whitey likes big cars, fatty fried food, the Eagles, and chewing tobacco. In other words… he’s a True Blue American!
