Deathlok first appeared in Astonishing Tales #25, a cyborg killing machine whose brain belonged to human Luther Manning. After a run in Astonishing Tales, Deathlok faded from view, appearing sporadically in various issues of Marvel Team-Up, Captain America, and others. Finally, in Marvel Comics Presents #62, his brain was destroyed when the onboard computer electrocuted him.
In 1990, Marvel revisited the Deathlok project in this four-issue graphic novel limited series. A new Deathlok is brought to life in the Marvel Universe! Meet Roxxon employee Michael Collins, a man with a mission! In this, his debut mini-series… a new Deathlok is born! Cybertek Systems (the applied cybernetics division of Roxxon Oil) have decided to continue with their failed Deathlok project. The only problem: they need a new brain for the system. That little difficulty is solved when Michael Collins, head of their computer systems division discovered that his “prosthetics” project was actually a weapons system. Michael, a pacifist, threatens to quit. Instead, he was captured—and woke up as the new Deathlok cyborg!
Story/Spoilers
In book #1, “The Brains of the Outfit”, Michael Collins, a Cybertek employee, uncovers evidence of the Deathlok project and he confronts the company’s head, Harlan Ryker. Ryker has Collins drugged and puts his brain in the Deathlok cyborg. While the Deathlok cyborg is on a mission for Roxxon putting down guerillas in the South American nation of Estrella, Collins’ mind unexpectedly awakes and gains some control of the cyborg which is quickly recalled to Cybertek. At Cybertek, Collins achieves full control of the Deathlok cyborg and escapes.
Next in book #2, “Jesus Saves”, Deathlok is befriended by Jesus Badalamente. Harlan Ryker sends Mainframe to take down Deathlok.
Next in book #3, “Dam If He Don’t”, Deathlok returns to the nation of Estrella to aid the rebels in destroying Roxxon’s dam and its cybernetic forces. With information from Nick Fury, Deathlok returns to Cybertek to capture Harlan Ryker.
Finally in book #4, “Ryker’s Island”, In exchange for the return of his human body, Deathlok agrees to help Harlan Ryker with an arms deal sending weapons to Japan. Deathlok and Sunfire uncover a plot to use the weapons to start World War III.
