Created by Steve Ditko, the character first appeared in Strange Tales #110 (cover-dated July 1963). Doctor Strange serves as Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Strange was introduced during the Silver Age of Comic Books in an attempt to bring a different kind of character and themes of mysticism to Marvel Comics.

Mordo visits the Ancient One’s home in astral form and compels the servant to put a drug in his food. Baron Mordo attempts to wring mystic secrets from him by threatening to let the poison kill him gradually. When Doctor Strange tries to contact the Ancient One and fails, he realizes something is wrong and visits in astral form. Strange and Mordo do battle. In desperation, Strange uses his amulet to transfer energy from himself to the Ancient One, thus weakening himself. He bluffs Mordo by telling him that he can keep Mordo’s astral self from reuniting with his physical body. Mordo flees to his body and loses control over the servant. Strange follows and tells Mordo that his plot has failed

In the Dream Dimension Nightmare has prepared a potion that will bring humans into his dimension and trap them while they sleep. Dr. Strange is contacted by the police to solve a case where people can not be awakened after falling asleep. Dr. Strange discover that the sleeping people are under a spell. Using a chant found in the Book of Vishanti Dr. Strange is able to enter the Dream Dimension. Inside Dr. Strange evades the first traps of Nightmare and free the imprisoned men, but is then himself trapped. However using his amulet Strange defeats Nightmare’s minion, the Spinybeast and escapes to the mortal world.

Beyond the Purple Veil! (Strange Tales #119)
Dr. Strange is up late at night studying a sinister gem when he discovers two common burglars breaking into his house. He sends them through the wall and leave them without calling the police. This encourages the thieves to return next evening after Strange has dismissed Wong and retreated to his study. They steal the strange gem and escapes. Dr. Strange quickly senses that something is wrong. The gem has transported the unsuspecting thieves to the Purple Dimension. Dr, Strange enters the Purple Dimension himself and is brought before its ruler, Aggamon the All-Powerful. Aggamon shows how his subjects are slaving in the mines digging for gems and then offers to release his captives if Dr. Strange takes their place. He accept, but breaks free of his shackles as soon as the two thieves have been returned. Aggamon attacks with his jeweled demolisher beam and Strange counters with his magic amulet. The contest lasts for hours and both grows weaker. At last the cowardly Aggamon gives up and surrenders. With his amulet Strange weakens Aggamon’s powers and makes it so that only by releasing his captives may Aggamon regain his strength. Dr. Strange returns to his house where he learns that the two crooks have given themselves up and promised to live straight from now on.

When a local haunted house becomes the subject of a television program trying to debunk it as a hoax, the camera crew attracts the attention of a crowd of spectaters, among them is Dr. Strange. Beleiving the house to be truly haunted, Strange enters the buildings and confronts it’s mystical attacks. He forces the entity in the house to reveal itself to him and tell him it’s purpose. He learns that it is from another time-continuum and that it has come to observe humanity. With the threat neutralized, Strange exists the house and uses a spell to make it return from where it came. The Challenge of Loki! (Strange Tales #123)
In order to get control of Thor’s hammer, Loki tricks Dr. Strange into believing that Loki is a helpless prisoner of the “evil” Thor and the only way to free himself is by gaining control of Thor’s hammer. Using a spell to draw Thor’s hammer to him, Loki reveals his ruse before the hammer can get to them. Canceling the spell and having Thor track it’s path to his Sanctum, Dr. Strange attempts to fight off Loki. However, Loki proves to be a more adept at magic than Strange, however Loki is forced to retreat when he sees that Thor is on his way. With Loki gone, Thor continues on his merry way, unaware of the plot against him that almost succeded.

Dr. Strange is persued by the minions of Baron Mordo in Hong Kong, narrowly escaping each attack with his own mystical aptitude, trying desperatly to make an escape. Defeating all attackers in both human and asteral forms, Dr. Strange manages to sneak aboard an airplane and trick Mordo’s forces in searching for him elsewhere, by disguising his asteral form like one of Mordo’s minsions and trick the others into going the opposite way of the plane.

Detecting Strange’s presence, Dormammu infuses Mordo with his mystical might and sends him to battle Strange. While at the lair of the Ancient One, the weakened Ancient one tells his servant that perhaps only Eternity may save him. Back at Strange’s Sanctum, Dormammu takes full control over Mordo and pours all his mystical power into him, allowing him to easily defeat Dr. Strange making Strange black during combat.

The Wondrous World of Dr. Strange (Amazing Spider-Man Annual #2)
Spider-Man is disappointed to find nothing going on at night. However, a man named Xandu enters a bar-room brawl finding two muscular men daring anyone in there to a fight. Xandu hypnotizes them to feel no pain and give them limitless strength to accomplish their task: to steal the second half of the Wand of Watoomb. We learn that Dr. Strange holds this half in his mansion. As they break in, Dr. Strange tries to distract them but he is soon knocked out. The two henchmen find the Wand of Watoomb and exit a skylight, which attracts the attention of Spider-Man. Spider-Man goes in to fight not knowing their supernatural strength, yet as he’s knocked down, he throws a Spider Tracer on one of the henchmen. Xandu receives the second half of the wand and joins them together. He reveals that with the wand he can create doorways to other dimensions and times, as well as see any place or object he desires. Spider-Man interrupts Xandu’s trying to kill Dr. Strange but starts to disappear to an alternate dimension. Spider-Man realizes this and grabs the Wand of Watoomb realizing its importance. Xandu then sends the two henchmen after Spider-Man. As they fight, Dr. Strange regains his consciousness and follows the track to Xandu’s lair. The two do battle when the two henchmen bring Spider-Man back to Earth. Xandu regains control of the Wand of Watoomb and uses it against Dr. Strange. Realizing he’s overpowered by the wand, he leaves his physical form to his ectoplasmic spirit to aid Spider-Man. At Dr. Strange’s suggestion, Spider-Man grabs onto a wire and shorts out the two henchmen’s hypnosis. Dr. Strange returns to his physical form and fights alongside Spider-Man to trip up Xandu with his webbing and retrieves the wand. The wand is drained of its magical power and Dr. Strange wipes the memory and evil intentions of Xandu

Lost in thought Dr. Strange is almost struck by a truck while crossing the road, however a spell saves him at the last moment. Returning to his Sanctum, Strange ponders further over a sense of dread of some opposing force that is waiting to strike. After seeking the advoice of the Ancient One, Strange soon becomes aware of a presence in his Sanctum. Chasing this presense in his asteral form, he is too late to stop it from taking possession of his physical body. It attack’s Strange, and after a fierce battle, Strange realizes his asteral form could touch his foe, when his opponent tries to leap out of the Sanctum’s window, Strange prevents it from falling to realize that the Sanctum had been transported to another realm. Begged by version of himself manifesting in trees and clouds telling him to surrender to the force around him, he uses the Eye of Agamotto to learn the truth. He learns that he actually got hit by the truck and now is in emergency surgery and that he is really in the dream world. Upon his discovery he also learns it is his old foe Nightmare who is responsible and the two battle each other until Strange defeats him. After his victory, Strange awakens in the hospital and erases the doctors memories of his mystical abilities.
