Fables: Werewolves of the Heartland tells an epic tale that began well before Bigby Wolf set foot in the bucolic plains of the Midwest. It began long ago when he served in World War II and became mired in a Nazi experiment that would change nations. It’s soon evident that murder in Story City is the least of their sins, and unraveling the town’s many mysteries may cost Bigby Wolf, the seventh son of the North Wind, much more than his own life.
Bigby Wolf takes center stage in this original graphic novel, embarking on a quest through the American Heartland to find a new location for Fabletown. In his wanderings, Bigby stumbles across a small town named Story City, that, amazingly enough, seems to be populated by werewolves. Who are they and where did they come from? They aren’t Fables, but they sure aren’t normal mundys. They seem to already know and revere Bigby, but at the same time they’ve captured and caged him – but why? Unravelling the many mysteries of Story City may cost Bigby more than his life…
Now Vertigo presents, “Fables: Werewolves of the Hearland”, Bigby embarks on a quest through the American Heartland to find a new location for Fabletown.
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, “When We All Lived in the Forest”, All her life Oda has dreamed that a stranger would arrive bringing vast changes to Story City, and now she tells her brother Carl that the day has arrived. Bigby Wolf enters the surrounding forest only to be set upon by werewolves, and is taken prisoner through the use of tranquilizer darts.
Next in part #2, “Wolves at War”, Awaking in prison, Bigby learns that the leader of Story City is his old comrade Sergeant Harp, whom he had thought killed in World War II. A flashback recaps their attack on Castle Frankenstein.
Next in part #3, “A Kind of Limbo”, Harp frees Bigby on parole, and shows him some of Story City. He gives Bigby a guest house for his own use, and there Oda tries unsuccessfully to seduce Bigby.
Next in part #4, “A God Among Us”, Star-struck residents of Story City mob Bigby to beg for favors, even as the covert Spezialeinheit plots against him. Bigby surreptitiously commandeers the local winds, and lays plans to destablize the Story City system.
Next in part #5, “Rituals”, Carl and Diana plot how to kill Bigby, and convert his death in to a religious ritual to their advantage.
Next in part #6, “Projekt Volsung”, Harp and Sigi explain how Bigby’s blood transformed them into werewolves; how they made peace with each other, and learned how to infect others; how the new tribe of werewolves made its way to America, took over Story City, and made it their own.
Next in part #7, “Story Night”, Stating that Story City is about to explode, Bigby revokes his parole and returns to his cell. The Spezialeinheit members turn to werewolves in order to kill Bigby and seize control of the community, only to discover that Bigby has escaped.
Next in part #8, Sword & Fire”, Recognizing that their lives and their systems have collapsed, Sigi commits suicide. Bigby and the Spezialeinheit make war throughout Story City, burning much of it in the process. Carl orders his followers to burn fellow members of the community in hopes of killing Bigby at the same time. Bigby hunts and slays the Spezialeinheit members, sparing only two for his own purposes, and orders a mass gathering on the morrow.
Finally in part #9, “Precipice”, Gathering the community, Bigby damns Arthur Harp as a weak leader, executes him, and installs Alwin in his place. He orders them to manage their own affairs and avoid drawing the attention of either Mundys or Fables. On his way out of town he meets Oda, who is also leaving. Both of them agree that Story City is untenable, and is doomed to collapse in time.
