Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “The Great Turkey Shoot”, After their defeat at the battle of Midway the Japanese lost the elite of their carrier forces, and were facing a new threat – the loss of the Philippines. When American Admiral Spruance laid siege to the islands of Guam, Rota and Saipan, the Japanese high command had to commit its remaining carriers in a vain effort to stop him. Unknown to the Japanese, the strength of the U.S. Fleet was being rapidly built up – new carriers and other ships were being launched daily. All this while the Japanese Fleet stagnated. American submarines were strangling the Japanese Merchant Fleet, slowing to a trickle the flow of oil, steel and other goods needed to replace losses necessary to maintain effective fleet levels. So as powerful as the Japanese Navy was, it was unknowingly about to engage a vastly superior American Fleet in the Battle of Midway, nicknamed “The Great Turkey Shoot”!
Next in issue #2, “The Battle of The Java Sea”, The all-new second issue of FAMOUS NAVAL BATTLES OF WW2 examines one of the most important naval engagements of World War II, The Battle of the Philippine Sea. Also known as the Battle of the Java Sea, this confrontation pitted dozens of U.S. carriers, battleships, cruisers, and support ships against the cream of the Japanese Navy. The battle was close but the final result spelled inevitable defeat for the Empire of Japan. In the opening days of World War II the Japanese quickly overran the Pacific Ocean possessions of the European Allies. The Dutch island of Java was next on the Japanese ‘hit list’ and to avert another disaster, the Allies sent various naval units to the aid of the Dutch Admiral who was in overall command. These units included American, British and Australian ships. The operation seemed doomed from the beginning: conflicts in strategy and tactics, combined with differences in languages and signaling methods, along with a lack of knowledge and experience of Japanese tactics, made Allied success a long-shot. Nevertheless, this ad-hoc fleet was the only Allied force standing between Japan and the Empire’s successful conquest of the major oil- and rubber-producing possessions in the Far East. The Battle of the Java Sea, while not as famous as the Battles of Midway and Coral Sea, constituted a major confrontation in the Pacific theater during World War II. It may remain ‘mysterious’ to many military and WW2 buffs, but it had far-reaching consequences on the course of the Second World War.
