Description
Forty Coffins One-shot Comic
Writer: Rodolfo Santullo
Artist: Jok
Letterer: Jacob Bascle
Editors: Dave Land & Taylor Smith
Cover by: Jok
One by one, they disappear. The ship Demeter is traveling from Romania to Whitby, England with a mysterious cargo of coffins. As the crew is beset by a horrific killer, the remaining sailors turn on each other in fear and paranoia. Only when it’s too late do they realize their cargo carries the vampire Dracula. Based on Bram Stoker’s classic novel, Forty Coffins is the story of Dracula’s journey to England told from the point-of-view of the ship’s crew.
Story/Spoilers
One seemingly normal evening, some old sailors witness a heavily damaged ship heading at high speeds towards the port. Following the ship are storm clouds and abhorrent weather. The ship maneuvers a reef and easily docks into port, almost appearing to be controlled by magic. Upon investigating the ship, the old sailors find the captain’s log in his quarters. He begins reading it to uncover a bloody story. As he reads, he discovers that one by one, the terrified crewmembers of the Russian schooner Demeter vanished, victims of an unearthly lifeform that lied comatose in the ship’s hold during daylight hours. Only the Demeter’s seasoned captain, a proud man of the sea, remained to confront the voracious monster that preyed upon his crew by moonlight. Having set sail from Varna, Moldavia, the captain and crew of the Russian schooner, The Demeter, began their journey to Fairfax, England. What started out as a routine voyage is turned into a nightmare as the crew is stopped by Turkish Customs. This time around, they are very detailed in their search of the ship and are inspecting specifically the cargo bay, as if looking for something. Fearing for their lives, the crew ambushes the Turks, and a fight breaks out. Near the end of the fight, as the crew is turning the tides, the Turks that were inspecting the cargo bay sprint out, appearing terrified of something. They leave the remainder of the crew and the ship alone. Shortly after, one of the crew spots a strange apparition during his night watch, and suddenly another member of the night watch crew mysteriously goes missing from the decks. Now a nightmare at sea, each night another crew member goes missing and it’s evident that some vile, unearthly stowaway is stalking its decks. Her captain does all he can to maintain order, expose and eradicate his ship of this hell-spawned curse… but to no avail as another night passes and his most trusted second mate falls victim to the terrible monster on board. Now ravaged, the Russian schooner “The Demeter”, nears its final destination of Fairfax, England. With all but a few remaining crew and only its terrified captain left to guide her into port. The nightmare at sea is almost over as the new, true captain of the ship, the Upyr, now rules the decks with his bloodlust and prepares himself for his new home and his fresh, new and bountiful victims. Now, with the crew’s corpses scattered across the ocean, the ships’ Captain is the only man left standing between this unholy thing from the cargo bay and its final destination.
