A century before the events of New York Times bestselling author George R. R. Martin’s epic series, “A Song of Ice and Fire”, a squire named Dunk picks up the sword and shield of his dead master and enters a tournament to begin his career as a knight. But ‘Ser Duncan’ has much to learn about this world of knights and nobles, and as he attempts to find a sponsor who will allow him to enter the tournament, he makes friends and enemies readily. Dunk is a capable fighter and has a strong sense of honor, but is that enough to become a true knight in the eyes of the others? Or is he just a young man living a delusion and putting those he knows in grave danger? It’s a classic underdog story… George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire has attracted a vast legion of fans, some of whom compare his work to that of the genre’s icons.
Adapted from the popular novella by George R. R. Martin, and so beloved by fans and critics alike for its deep storytelling and breathtaking visuals that the first edition became one of the best-selling graphic novels of 2004! Martin’s world comes alive in The Hedge Knight, and fans of the novels will delight in seeing Westeros captured graphically. The tournament grounds feature a number of house crests, which should be recognizable by fans, and the medieval style of speech can make the reader think he’s reading one of the novels.
Now, Dabel Brothers Productions presents, The Hedge Knight. Set a century before the books, in the fantasy world of Westeros, where life is short and the winters are long. The story follows Dunk, a would-be knight, and Egg, a boy who forces himself upon Dunk as his squire. Dunk travels to the great tournament at Ashford, but, as a hedge knight (a self-made traveling knight, without a house or permanent patron), he struggles with even the routine tasks of outfitting himself and finding a place to sleep….
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, Ser Arlan is dead, long live Ser Duncan the Tall. Ser Duncan finds his way to Ashfordmeadow and prepares himself for the fight of his life. All he owns he is gambling on his first joust, he’s determined to be champion, but is that what fate has in store for him? Also, we’ll meet some of the most important people in Dunk’s future, though who will benefit him and who will betray him is impossible to discern…
Next in part #2, Placing every worldly possession on the line to challenge in the tournament at Ashford meadow, Dunk does all he can to make a name for himself. With a runaway named ‘Egg’ for a squire, and a tree for a pavilion, Dunk prepares for battle. But one more seemingly impossible challenge besets him before he may enter the lists… Can he actually prove his knighthood?
Next in part #3, With a runaway for a squire, his dead master’s sword, and a pretty girl in his thoughts, Dunk is ready to take on the Kingdom’s best knights in the Ashford tournament as “Ser Duncan the Tall”. Gambling everything he owns for just one chance to prove himself on the battlefield, Dunk faces failure before he gets a chance to try when no one will vouch for his knighthood. Meanwhile, the coming of the tournament challenges not only his determination to join the lists, but also his very understanding of what it means to be a knight.
Next in part #4, As dusk descends over the Ashford tournament, Dunk and his runaway squire, Egg, recover from the horror they just witnessed and prepare for Dunk’s upcoming combat in the tournament. But Dunk’s first combat takes an unexpected, and potentially deadly, form when he chooses to defend a helpless puppeteer, Tanselle (a girl Dunk has more than a passing interest in) from the brutal hand of Aerion, a prince of the blood of the dragon. When the dust settles, lies are revealed, lives are destroyed, true natures are exposed, and Dunk finds himself with an opponent he cannot hope to defeat, the law of the realm!
Next in part #5, In this prequel story to A Song of Ice and Fire, night falls over the life on one noble knight and brings the dawn of his squire’s knighthood. Dubbing himself “Ser Duncan the Tall”, The Hedge Knight sets forth to the tourney at Ashford Meadow in search of fame and glory and the honor of upholding his oath as a knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Unfortunately for him, the world isn’t ready for a knight who keeps his oaths, and his chivalrous methods could be the very cause of his demise.
Finally in part #6, Dunk was a knight who remembered the vows: to protect the weak and innocent. But that may have cost him everything when he protects a young woman from the malevolent Prince Aerion Targaryen. Now Dunk’s simple dream, to ride in the tournament, has finally come true in a twisted turn of fate. No more are the spoils of a mock battle at stake. He must now fight for his innocence, his honor, and his life! With six unlikely allies at his side, Dunk takes to the battlefield in the deadly trial by seven! Swords are no longer blunted. Tourney lances are traded in for war lances tipped with steel! The battle is joined as The Hedge Knight rides to its brutal and tragic conclusion!
