The Official adaptation of the Hit Movie… G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra!

G.I. Joe is a line of action figures produced and owned by the toy company Hasbro. Since 1964 to present the G.I. Joe franchise has evolved from action figures with vehicles & playsets to a world-wide phenomenon including movies, animated TV series, comics, books, trading cards, games, clothing, artwork and so much more. With a complex background story involving an ongoing struggle between the G.I. Joe Team and the evil Cobra Command which seeks to take over the Free World through terrorism, G.I. Joe always delivers all-out action. Although the members of the G.I. Joe team are not superheroes, they all have expertise in areas such as martial arts, weapons, and explosives… so they know how to kick as… fight like true heroes!

Now IDW Publishing presents the official comic adaptation of the 2009 Paramount Pictures hit movie… G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra! The story follows two American soldiers, Duke and Ripcord, who join the G.I. Joe Team after being attacked by Military Armaments Research Syndicate (M.A.R.S.) troops.

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1A, Paris 1641, James McCullen has been found guilty of treason of selling weapons to their enemies. Instead of killing McCullen, they decide to make an example of him for his grave act of betrayal. As punishment, he is forced to wear an iron mask for the rest of his life so that no one will ever see his treacherous face again. As they place the iron mask over his face, he screams in agony. Belgium present day, a descendant of James McCullen, is giving a speech at Nato Weapons Command about a new war technology called nano-mites. After McCullen’s war demonstration of his nanotech technology, he meets with General Hawk to discuss the matter of transporting his weaponry securely. General Hawk believes that his team unit should be the ones that are in charge of transporting McCullen’s highly dangerous nanotech warheads, but McCullen disagrees and dismisses him. Kyrgyzstan present day, Captain Duke Hauser and a small military unit is given the briefcase holding the technology at MARS Labs. After a small briefing on the delicate nature of their transport, they leave MARS Lab in a tightly secured squad unit. Without warning, they are soon ambushed, and their vehicle flips over. Duke manages to get out unscathed, but his partner Ripcord has sustained some injuries. A helicopter appears from the skies and a woman with long black hair jumps out and steals the nanotech briefcase. She spots Duke and fires at him and Ripcord but hits their vehicle instead causing it to explode. Duke pursues the dark-haired woman, but she kicks him in the face and tells him that he deserves it. She tells Duke goodbye as one of her goons prepare to shoot him. An aircraft appears distracting the woman and her goon long enough for Duke to knock out the gun from the goons’ hands. The woman quickly grabs the briefcase and makes a run for it. As Duke pursues the woman more goons appear but are all stopped by people from the unknown aircraft. As aircraft opens fire on the woman and she loses grip of the briefcase and escapes without it. Duke grabs the briefcase but is distraught that he lost the black-haired woman. The people from the aircraft catches up and surrounds Duke and the briefcase. Duke pulls out his gun and tells them to stand down as they pull out their guns on him too.

Next in issue #2A, The Joes team surround Duke and insist that he hand over the briefcase to them, but he resists despite being outnumbered. Ripcord soon joins him, but everything is still at a stalemate. General Hawk explains that his unit will be handling the transportation of the high-risk weaponry, but Duke refuses saying that he was the one appointed for the task and that he will follow through. Hawk gives in but insist that his unit accompany Duke and Ripcord seeing that they are now undermanned and under-armed. While inside the Joes aircraft, Scarlett treats Ripcord’s injuries while Duke converse with the others. Soon, they arrive at the Joes base called the Pit. They are greeted while at the Pit and General Hawk gives them a tour and explains the G.I. Joe mission. They eventually reach a room where James McCullen is awaiting them. The McCullen before them is revealed to be some form of holographic projection for communications purposes. McCullen and Hawk discuss the attack on Duke’s convoy. McCullen asks if they can still deliver the case to NATO, and Hawk replies that it is unwise to expose them before the mysterious attackers are revealed and dealt with. McCullen agrees, but he asks if he can examine the warheads first and he does so. As he finishes, he ends the holographic projection and Scarlett asks Breaker and Heavy Duty for their input; while Breaker couldn’t make heads or tails of the voice analyzer, Heavy Duty believes that McCullen is working an angle. Elsewhere at MARS lab, McCullen is revealed to have been in cahoots with the dark-haired woman called Baroness. They argue about their failed mission but are glad that they manage to secretly activate the tracking device on the case to locate its position. McCullen leaves and meets with the Doctor where he demonstrates his latest creation, the perfect soldiers. The Doctor explains that he has injected his test subjects with nano technology which makes them fearless and completely obedient. McCullen impressed orders the Doctor to send a troop to rendezvous with Storm Shadow and Baroness. Back at the Pit, Hawk tells Duke that he is now the custodian of the briefcase and that Duke’s mission is complete. Duke unwilling to leave tells Hawk that he wants in on the new task. As incentive, Duke reveals that he once knew the Baroness and a curious Hawk listen. In Paris, France, the Baroness returns home to her husband. As she makes her way to her bed chamber, she is greeted by Storm Shadow who tells her that they will be going after the warheads at dawn. Hawk and Duke continue to talk about Baroness and her past. Hawk asks Duke if he is able to kill Baroness and Duke says that he will if he has too. Duke and Ripcord get acquainted with the rest of the Joes. Ripcord is especially interested in Scarlett. Hawk alone in his office does some paperwork until a knock is heard on his door. It is Cover Girl who asks him for a few signatures for some documents. As Hawk signs them, Cover Girl is impaled through the chest by a dagger.

Next in issue #3A, Zartan stabs Cover Girl through the chest and before General Hawk can react Storm Shadow thrusts his sword into Hawk’s gut. Baroness takes the briefcase, and the three Cobra soldiers make their exit from the bloody scene. General Hawk staggers to press the silent alarm, while Cover Girl lays across from him dead. The alarm at the Pit blazes and the Joes all reacts as Cobra Vipers raids their base. Duke blocks Baroness and she asks him if he could kill her as she walks closer towards him, though he hesitates to shoot. A viper prepares to shoot Duke, but Ripcord tackles him, and the shot blows up the walkway that Baroness and Duke were on instead. Ripcord pulls his gun out on Baroness and tells her to freeze, but Storm Shadow intercepts him and cuts his gun in two. Storm Shadow prepares to slash Ripcord, but Snake Eyes appears and counter his attacks. Baroness gathers herself together but is tackled down by Scarlett. The two women fight it out and Scarlett uses an invisibility cloak to disappear from Baroness’ sight. Unable to see her attacker, Baroness is easily subdued by Scarlett in her invisible cloaking. Baroness quickly grabs some type of liquid nearby and splashes it onto Scarlett disrupting her invisibility cloak advantage. Scarlett momentarily stunned by this is now overtaken by Baroness. Duke rushes towards Baroness and Scarlett just as Storm Shadow arrive on his jet pack to pick up Baroness for their escape. Before Baroness and Storm Shadow leave, Baroness whacks Duke in the face with the briefcase and then they take off. Scarlett is alone in the bathroom looking at the bruises she got from Baroness choking her. Ripcord walks in on her and they talk. In a flashback, a young Snake Eyes sneaks into someone’s home to steal some food to eat. A young Storm Shadow calls out thief and attacks the young Snake Eyes. An older man comes in and tells Storm Shadow to back off their young intruder and offers young Snake Eyes some help. The old man becomes Snake Eye’s martial arts master and quickly becomes his favorite pupil. A scorned Storm Shadow is seemingly accused of murdering their master as it is seen that Storm Shadow’s blade was used to kill their master. Scarlett and the other Joes are performing an autopsy on one of the dead Vipers that attacked the Pit where she discovers that the body has been imbued with nano mites. Ripcord deduces that McCullen probably set them up when he asked them to open the case for him. Breaker informs them that he has tracked the Baroness and they suit up and leave. A tiny flashback reveals that Duke feels responsible for the death of Rex because he sent Rex into a house to search for something. Baroness arrives in a lab in Paris where she tells her husband Leon to do her a favor. After activating the warheads for her, Baroness kisses him and Storm Shadow stabs Leon and leaves him to die. The Joes arrive onto the scene, but they are too late Storm Shadow and Baroness are already on the move. Snake Eyes leaps onto the Cobra’s getaway vehicle while the others pursue them in another vehicle. Storm Shadow and Baroness manages to get Snake Eyes off the top of their vehicle but are now tailed by Duke and Ripcord who are in accelerator suits. After a fancy chase scene, Storm Shadow and Baroness gets into a wreck with an oncoming train and decide to take the chase on foot. Duke goes after Baroness who has the kill switch while Ripcord goes after Storm Shadow who has the warhead. Storm Shadow manages to get a shot at the Eiffel Tower and leaps out the window before Ripcord can catch him. The warhead hits the Eiffel Tower, and it is consumed with nano mites which eat away at its construct. Duke chases Baroness onto the roof of a building. Baroness spots Storm Shadow in a helicopter and leaps out towards the helicopter. With the help of the accelerator suit, Duke manages to leap on board with them as well. Duke manages to hit the kill switch after a brief struggle and stops the nano mites from doing further damage. Baroness congratulates Duke for being able to stop the attack on Paris, and Storm Shadow knocks Duke out.

Finally in issue #4A, The French are mad at the G.I. Joe team, and are kicked out, never to return again. Not only that, but the team has also been shut down and everyone has been called back, ordered to return to the PIT. This isn’t exactly the end of the Joe team, as Hawk didn’t specifically tell his team which route to take back to the PIT. Later, The Joes infiltrate the arctic M.A.R.S. base where Duke is being held. Here we see Rockslides, and a Night Raven. The man who has been running the show the entire time is introduced to Duke. The Doctor reveals who he is to Duke, with Duke shocked and bristling with questions. With warheads launching amuck, Ripcord launches in a Night Raven in an effort to shoot them down. Meanwhile, Duke needs to be saved, and before the Joes show up, The Baroness does, though it might not be for what you’d expect. Duke gets into a standoff with McCullen and The Doctor, over The Baroness. An explosion occurs, with McCullen suffering very severe burns to the face. Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes face off in a battle which reveals a shocking revelation that gives hint to Storm Shadow’s true intentions. The Doctor helped McCullen heal his face, and the results are visibly familiar. A rather fitting name is also given to McCullen, meanwhile The Doctor dons a new mask, and changes his name as well. With the mission a success, Ripcord and Duke are brought onboard as official members of the G.I. Joe team, and Cobra rises in political office.
