Now IDW presents, “Godzilla: The IDW Era”, featuring an illustrated overview of IDW’s most popular Godzilla story-lines. With rich “Godzilla” artwork and telling details from each hit series, this comic will instill a desire in every Godzilla enthusiast to re-read every IDW Godzilla comic series again. Good Stuff!!
The first title released by IDW was titled Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters. When it hit stores in March 2011, it was clear from the start that IDW’s version of Godzilla was going to be very different from what came before. Aside from the roster of Toho’s monsters making their comic book debuts, Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters offered readers a story filled with not just gigantic, rampaging monsters, but one rich with political and social satire as well. With giant monsters suddenly appearing across the globe, the governments of the world struggle to maintain order and control of the situation. As the world leaders are shown time and time again, there is little they can do against the greatest monster of all, Godzilla.
Spanning 12 issues, the series introduced a number of characters (both human and monster) to what would become the “IDW Universe” and serve as the foundation for two series that would come later, Godzilla and Godzilla: Rulers of Earth.
——————————————————————————–
Godzillla: Gangsters & Goliaths
IDW’s first Godzilla miniseries was to many a throwback to the classic Showa films of the 1960s. From the team of writer John Layman and artist Alberto Ponticelli, Godzilla: Gangsters & Goliaths put readers into the world of Detective Makoto Sato as he attempts to get even with and bring down the Takahashi Crime Syndicate using whatever means necessary… including kidnapping a certain set of twin fairies to force Mothra to do his bidding! With more than he can handle already, the stakes grow ever higher when Godzilla appears and a clash of monsters ensues. This five-issue miniseries was released in March 2011.
In addition to the team creating the book, Godzilla: Gangsters & Goliaths featured a number of talented artists lending their skills to the covers. Among them, Geof Darrow and James Stokoe.
——————————————————————————–
Godzilla
The second “ongoing” series behind Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters brought a tale of revenge and redemption to the IDW Universe. Titled Godzilla, this 13-issue series followed an ex-special forces operative named Boxer as he sets his sights on Godzilla. Seeking revenge for the death of someone he cared for, Boxer and his team realize that revenge is not only dangerous, but a potential money maker as well. Calling themselves the Monster Kill Crew, Boxer and his team travel the globe, willing to do the world’s dirty work for a premium. But would killing Godzilla and the other monsters really be the smartest thing to do, especially with the arrival of even more monsters from space?!
Written by Duane Swierczynski, the first issue of Godzilla was released in May 2012. Artwork featured the work of Simon Gane and Dave Wachter (Issue #6), with Rhonda Pattison once again handling the interior colors. While being collected in three volumes of trade paperbacks, the series has recently been reprinted and collected as Godzilla: History’s Greatest Monster, available now.
——————————————————————————–
Godzilla Legends
The second miniseries released by IDW was Godzilla Legends. This five-issue anthology featured five standalone stories, not connected to any other book previously published by IDW, with a different creative team behind each one. When IDW first acquired the Godzilla license, there were a number of discussions on how to bring top talent to the book and a miniseries such as Legends was just the right kind of vehicle to do that with. One of those creators was Arthur Adams, who provided the series with five absolutely stunning (and interconnected) covers depicting the particular monster featured in that issue’s story.
The first issue featured the always brave (and hopelessly outmatched) Anguirus going up against the deadly Destoroyah. Titled “Underdog,” the story was written by Godzilla: Rulers of Earth artist Matt Frank and Jeff Prezenkowski, with Matt also handling the art duties.
The second issue, “Lifespan,” was written by Jon Vankin with artwork by Godzilla artist Simon Gane. In the story, a young boy and his father are caught in the chaos as Rodan arrives to claim its offspring!
The aquatic behemoth Titanosaurus is featured in the third issue’s story as a young girl gifted with psychic powers is used to raise the giant monsters from the depths. But as it turns out, there are plans for the monster, and it doesn’t bode well for humanity. Written by Mike Raicht with artwork by Tony Parker, “Secrets” featured an ending that just begs for a sequel.
“Smog of War” was the fourth issue, featuring a young Mechagodzilla crew investigating a chemical disaster in Linfen, China. When the team arrives, they discover Hedorah (AKA the Smog Monster) was behind it all. When Godzilla shows up, it’s everyone for themselves in a three-way monster melee. IDW’s Creative Consultant for the Godzilla books and future Godzilla: Rulers of Earth writer Chris Mowry provided the script, nd E.J. Su drew the issue.
The final issue was written by current Godzilla editor Bobby Curnow and dealt with an aging adventurer hired by the government to get an up-close and very personal study of Godzilla. Not one to turn down such a challenge, the adventurer learns that climbing Godzilla could prove to be the adventure of a lifetime. The talented Dean Haspiel provided the artwork in one of the most emotional Godzilla stories yet.
——————————————————————————–
Godzilla: The Half-Century War
The third miniseries from IDW knocked both fans and critics alike off their feet. Godzilla: The Half-Century War arrived and took no prisoners as it delivered one of the most stunningly illustrated and well-written tales courtesy of James Stokoe. The story follows Lieutenant Ota Murakami and his first encounter with Godzilla… an encounter that turns into an obsession as Murakami documents the next 50 years with the monster. Spanning five decades and bring a variety of monsters into the mix, Godzilla: The Half-Century War has been highly-recommended by fans as one of the most must-read books from IDW Publishing.
In addition to the compelling story, Stokoe – with color assists by Heather Breckel – delivers some of the most magnificent images ever to feature Godzilla and his co-stars. Massive, two-paged spreads packed with details, coupled with dynamic storytelling page after page made each issue a true work of art. Recently, some of Stokoe’s work from this series have appeared on officially-licensed Godzilla T-shirts.
——————————————————————————–
Godzilla: Rulers of Earth
As Godzilla: The Half-Century War wrapped up and Godzilla nearing its climax, IDW decided to give two of their most die-hard creators their shot at a multi-issue book. Chris Mowry (Godzilla Legends #4) and Matt Frank (Godzilla Legends #1) teamed up to bring readers the most ambitious and fan-friendly book yet. The third chapter in IDW’s Godzilla universe, titled Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, hit stands in May 2013. Mowry and Frank both came up with a basic outline for the story, using elements and characters from the previous books Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters and Godzilla, while setting the foundation for the introduction of some new, yet familiar themes often seen in Godzilla films. With Mowry writing and Frank drawing (with the help of occasional guest artist Jeff Zornow), the series was the longest-running IDW Godzilla comic to date.
Set shortly after the events of Godzilla, the world has come to terms with giant monsters and tries to adapt to living alongside of them. Budding young scientist Lucy Casprell is part of a group of researchers determined to study the kaiju and help prevent further death and destruction caused by them. Leading a group of specialized soldiers dealing with giant monsters is Steven Woods, last seen in Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters. As previously unseen monsters rise around the globe, the two groups soon learn that two alien races have teamed up to wipe out not just Godzilla, but humanity from the face of the Earth!
