At last, the Emerald Archer in his very own series! But will it be Ollie’s last, as someone comes gunning for him? An old friend of Oliver Queen’s dies and, much to her family’s consternation, leaves him her fortune and control of her company. Someone tries to blow Ollie and Dinah up. Plus, the origin of Green Arrow!
Story/Spoilers:
In issue #1, “All My Sins Remembered!”, Oliver Queen fights for justice, by day as a columnist for the Daily Star, by night as the Green Arrow. Two street toughs hold up a grocery store clerk. Before they can murder him, they are stopped by the Green Arrow. The Green Arrow activates an alarm, to signal for the police, before departing. At his home, the Green Arrow, as Queen, is accosted by Deidra Wagner, a lawyer. Queen is given a summons to appear at the reading of Abigail Horton’s last will and testament.
The scent of Horton’s perfume, on the document, draws Queen’s mind to his past. Queen’s relationship with Horton had generated great speculation in the society columns. Though Queen shared a deep friendship with the elder Horton, it was her daughter, Cynthia, who Queen romantically courted. Unlike the mother, however, the daughter shared few of Queen’s interests. That disparity drove them apart. To forget Cynthia, Queen booked passage on a luxury liner, one that was hijacked by pirates.
Queen was thrown overboard, washing up ashore on a deserted island. Queen taught himself archery, along with various other survival skills. When the pirates arrived on the island, to hide their ill-gotten goods, Queen easily dispatched them, using his newfound archery skills. Returning to the states, Queen, a changed man, embarked on a career as a masked vigilante, the Green Arrow. As the Green Arrow, Queen fought crime alongside his sidekick, Speedy.
During the course of his adventures as the Green Arrow, Queen’s neglect of his company cost him his fortune. Horton offered Queen to seed him capital to start anew, but Queen refused. Queen found life all the sweeter for having lost his fortune. Queen forged a lifelong friendship with the Green Lantern, and found love with the Black Canary. Queen stirs from his reverie, and bids Wagner good night. Queen’s appearance, at the reading of Horton’s will, surprises Cynthia.
Queen is introduced to Cynthia’s husband, Lord Gerrold Sinclair. The executer of the will, a Mister Thorndyke, seated next to an urn of Horton’s ashes, reads the will. Horton’s son, Theodore, Jr., daughter, Cynthia, and brother, Maxwell Stein, each receive several million dollars. Queen, shockingly, is awarded the bulk of the estate, along with controlling interest in Horton Chemicals. Horton’s family is outraged. Wagner, however, assures them that the will is legitimate, and does convey Horton’s true last wishes.
Queen has no interest in the money, but accepts that Horton didn’t want it to go to her, clearly, ungrateful family. En route home, Queen discusses the situation with his girlfriend, Dinah Drake Lance. Before he can enter his apartment, an explosion destroys it. Queen pursues the bomber, as the Green Arrow. The Green Arrow easily apprehends the bomber, who is more than eager to talk, to avoid a severe beating. Before the bomber can reveal any information, a remote signal incinerates him.
Realizing that he has been targeted due to Horton’s inheritance, the Green Arrow, as Queen, decides to accept it. The next morning, Queen establishes himself as the head of Horton Chemicals.
Next in issue #2, “A Slight Case of Vertigo..!”, Oliver Queen, the new president of Horton Chemical, is lost in thought. Queen’s secretary, one Mrs. Sangster, draws Queen out of his reverie, but only for a moment. Queen’s thoughts return to the recent death of Abigail Horton. Queen had been present at the reading of Horton’s will. Shockingly, Queen inherited millions of dollars, along with Horton’s company. Horton’s family were outraged. Shortly thereafter, an arsonist set fire to Queen’s home. When Queen attempted to interrogate the arsonist, as the Green Arrow, the arsonist, himself, was incinerated. After checking his car for explosives, Queen returns home.
Queen fashions some new high-tech arrowheads for his quiver. One such arrowhead scans Queen’s phone for taps. Dinah Laurel Lance, the Black Canary, offers Queen help on the case. Queen turns her down, preferring to solo on the investigation. Queen, as the Green Arrow, breaks into the Star City County Coroner’s Office. The Green Arrow learns Horton’s cause of death…asphyxiation…and that her wedding band was found in the palm of her hand, not worn on her finger. The Green Arrow s interrupted by a security guard. The Green Arrow harmlessly incapacitates the guard, and makes good his escape. The next morning, the Green Arrow, as Queen, rails against his computer terminal, drawing the attention of his secretary.
Queen meets with Horton’s brother, Maxwell Stein. To gauge Stein’s reaction, Queen reveals that he knows the identity of Horton’s murderer. Queen runs the same ruse on Horton’s daughter, Cynthia, and Horton’s son, Theodore, Junior. The executor of Horton’s will, one Mister Thorndyke, orders Queen to cease making his wild allegations of foul play, in Horton’s death, to Horton’s family. Queen agrees, much to the dismay of Deidre Wagner, Horton’s lawyer. A shadowy figure orders Queen’s murder. At a social gathering, given by Cynthia, and her husband, Lord Gerrold Sinclair, Queen is the target of an assassination attempt. Queen confronts his would-be killer, as the Green Arrow.
The failed assassin is revealed to be Horton’s son, Theodore, Junior. Before the Green Arrow can question Theodore, Junior, they are attacked by Count Vertigo. Under the effects of Count Vertigo’s power, Theodore, Junior falls to his death. Under the effects of Count Vertigo’s powers, the Green Arrow is incapable of hitting the Count. The Green Arrow launches a Feedback Arrow, at Count Vertigo, that homes in on the technology embedded in Count Vertigo’s temple, rendering the Count unconscious. Investigating Thoedore, Junior’s corpse, the Green Arrow sees that Theodore, Junior has drawn a hexagon in the sand. A shape not unlike Horton’s wedding band.
Next in issue #3, “Hexagon of Death”, The Green Arrow interrogates Count Vertigo, in his own inimitable style. Count Vertigo gives up some minor information, regarding a fuel alternative. The Green Arrow renders Count Vertigo unconscious. The Green Arrow turns Count Vertigo over to the authorities. The Green Arrow goes over the case in his mind. Abigail Horton, of Horton Pharmaceuticals, had died. In her will, the lion’s share of her fortune, as well as controlling interest in her company, had been left to the Green Arrow, in his civilian guise, Oliver Queen.
Horton’s family, particularly her son, Theodore, Junior, and daughter, Cynthia, were outraged. Horton’s lawyer’s junior partner, Deidre Wagner, had intimated that Horton’s death was purposeful. Queen’s apartment was targeted by an arsonist, who, himself was burned to death, by remote signal, when questioned. Theodore, Junior was revealed to be Horton’s killer. After failing to assassinate Queen, Theodore, Junior was murdered by Count Vertigo, to keep him from talking. Theodore, Junior drew a hexagon in the sand, reminiscent of Horton’s hexagonal wedding band. It’s the Green Arrow’s only clue.
Mister Jones, an operative of the Central Intelligence Agency, calls on Queen. Jones quickly discerns that Queen has no useful information, nor does Jones provide any to Queen. Switching tactics, Queen tries to run a ruse on the board of directors, to garner information, but Queen’s gambit fails. Frustrated with the investigation, Queen opts for a different tact. Queen feigns disinterest in running Horton Pharmaceuticals, then begin publicly spending his inherited fortune in a most debauched manner. Wagner calls Queen out on his behavior.
Not knowing if he can trust Wagner, Queen keeps up the debauched playboy façade. Horton’s lawyer, one Mister Thorndyke, reports that Queen is no longer a threat, but they are no closer to discovering Horton’s fuel alternative. By chance, Queen’s secretary, one Mrs. Sangster, provides Queen with the breakthrough he’s needed. Queen, using the password “Benzene Ring”, is able to get into Horton’s encrypted files, and discover the formula for the fuel alternative. Queen discovers that the man who originally synthesized the fuel alternative, Doctor Woodley, was also murdered.
Unbeknownst to Queen, Horton’s computer has been tapped, and the architects behind her murder, also have the information. Queen is targeted for assassination. A sniper draws a bead on Queen, just before being gunned down by Jones. Jones protects Queen from a group of shadowy gunman. Queen runs for his life. A barrage of bullets send debris flying into Jones, rendering him unconscious. Queen, as the Green Arrow, takes out the gunman. The Green Arrow teams up with Jones to bring Horton’s murderers to justice.
Finally in issue #4, “…Showdown at Sea!”, The Lady A, a yacht, has been anchored, for several days, in an undisclosed location. Captain Lash, and his modern day pirates, capture the yacht, enveloping it within their own vessel. Tracking the Lady A are the Black Canary, the Green Arrow, and Agent Jones, of the Central Intelligence Agency. The Green Arrow reflects on the case. Abigail Horton, the president of Horton Chemicals, had been murdered. Horton left the bulk of her fortune, and controlling interest in Horton Chemicals, to Oliver Queen.
Horton’s family were outraged. In the course of the investigation, Queen survived three assassination attempts, and as the Green Arrow, a run-in with Count Vertigo. Horton’s son, Theodore, Junior, was revealed as the murderer, but was, himself, slain by Count Vertigo. The entire case centered on Horton Chemicals’ discovery of a fuel alternative, the sole sample of which lies hidden somewhere aboard the Lady A. Spying a tanker near the Lady A’s last known coordinates, the Green Arrow plays a hunch.
The Green Arrow dives his plane towards the tanker, which opens fire on the aircraft. The Green Arrow maneuvers the airship out of the line of fire. Certain of their target, the Green Arrow leads the Black Canary, and Jones, on an all out assault on the tanker. The Green Arrow opens with a smoke arrow, to conceal their boarding of the tanker. Then, all Hell breaks loose, as Captain Lash’s mercenary army engages the Green Arrow’s boarding party.
Meanwhile, inside the yacht’s cabin, Captain Lash searches for the fuel alternative. The Black Canary, the Green Arrow, and Jones take out the mercenary crew. Captain Lash discovers the fuel alternative, hidden in a bust of Horton’s husband. With the mercenaries defeated, Captain Lash engages the Green Arrow in combat, pitting his acumen with a bullwhip against the Green Arrow’s archery skills. Ultimately, the Green Arrow defeats Captain Lash, even saving his foe’s life from a fatal fall.
Unfortunately, though Captain Lash is saved, the fuel alternative drops from his belt, into the sea. The Green Arrow interrogates Captain Lash. The Green Arrow pays a call on Horton’s daughter, Cynthia, and her husband, Lord Gerrold Sinclair. Also present in the house are Horton’s brother, Maxwell Stein, Horton’s lawyer, one Mister Thorndyke, and Thorndyke’s junior partner, Deidre Wagner. From the shadows of the trees, the Green Arrow watches Sinclair.
Jones phones Sinclair, luring the Lord to his office, and away from the innocent residents. The Green Arrow confronts Sinclair, only to find him shot. Cynthia reveals herself to be the true mastermind behind the plot. Cynthia, and the Green Arrow, take aim at each other. Dying, Sinclair’s final act is to murder Cynthia. The case has closed, though more tragically than the Green Arrow had expected. The Green Arrow, as Queen, turns over the Horton fortune, as well as controlling interest in Horton Chemicals, to Stein. The only inheritance Queen wanted was a pair of crystal goblets. Pouring wine into each goblet, Queen toasts the memory of his great friend, Horton.
