Description
Green Lantern: The Power of Ion Trade Paperback
Writer: Judd Winick
Artists: Dale Eaglesham, Eric Battle, Brandon Badeaux, Jamal Igle, Pat Quinn & various
Cover by: Ariel Olivetti
This graphic novel collects Green Lantern #142-150. Written by Judd Winick, with art by Dale Eaglesham, Eric Battle, Brandon Badeaux, Jamal Igle, Pat Quinn, and others, with a new cover by Ariel Olivetti, this volume finds Kyle battling his evil opposite, Oblivion. When the hero expends all the energy from his Power Ring to stop his foe, he sheds his GL identity and transforms into something new and more powerful — an identity he calls Ion.
When Green Lantern Hal Jordan amassed an enormous amount of power in order to fix a terrible tragedy, he became the destructive being known as Parallax — and ultimately lost everything. Now the current Green Lantern, Kyle Rayner, is noticing a power expansion. Can anyone handle such unlimited power without losing his humanity? Now, as a near-omnipotent being, Ion’s actions save countless lives on Earth and throughout the galaxy. But his friends fear for him — after all, great power can hurt just as easily as it can help. Undoubtedly one of the greatest personal challenges Green Lantern ever endures, The Power of Ion has forever changed Kyle Rayner’s perception of heroism!
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, The trio known as Inferno is more than a match for two Green Lanterns, so Jade is in serious trouble when Kyle gets critically injured and taken out of the fight! Jade’s got no time to help him out though, as Inferno’s three members – Ember, Torch, and Blaze – try to take out not only two Green Lanterns in one day, but all of Manhattan!
Next in part #2, One of Green Lantern’s original villains returns. Only Grayven, the son of Darkseid, has been “Jokerized” and has decided to become the ruler of New York City! Green Lantern has his hands full chasing down an insane and powerful threat, especially since Grayven’s brought some decidedly unfunny toys with him from Apokolips!
Next in part #3, Kyle’s powers have been increasing with experience, but his most recent adventures have pushed him farther than he’s ever gone before, and he may not be coming back! Jade, Sentinel and former Green Lantern John Stewart have to figure out how to make sure Kyle’s mind stays intact while Kyle struggles for control over a power that is too much for one person.
Next in part #4, It’s the end of an era for Kyle Rayner, and the beginning of something far more dangerous than he’s ever had to deal with. The Guardians of the Universe created the Green Lanterns to maintain order and peace, while their polar opposites, the Qwardians, believed only in bringing about disorder and chaos. Now their champions – Kyle and Nero – battle for control of the greatest source of power either of them has ever had access to. To the victor go the spoils, but the prize may prove too grand for either man to handle.
Next in part #5, Kyle Rayner is going through an incredible metamorphosis as all the power that he, his ring, and therefore all the incarnations of Green Lanterns before him converge under his control. Is the real question here can he control this much power, or should he?
Next in part #6, Wheelchair-bound former Green Lantern John Stewart confronts his deepest, darkest secrets – a twisted journey through the psyche of a man who has had it all and lost it all. Meanwhile, the current Green Lantern, Kyle Rayner, spreads his newfound wings into near-godhood.
Next in part #7, Before Jenny Lynn-Hayden took up the Green Lantern ring, she was simply Jade. Given powers through her lineage, she lost them protecting her father. All this may be changing thanks to the scope of Kyle (now known as Ion) and his new powers. But as Ion’s abilities increase, the concerns over whether or not Kyle should be trusted with this ultimate power grows in all of his peers.
Next in part #8, Kyle’s newfound powers as Ion may be the only thing that can help the JLA stop an alien invasion! But if that’s true, why doesn’t the JLA approve of what Kyle is doing? Kyle is forced to look at the way his god-like actions are affecting the world around him. If Superman can’t convince Kyle to think twice about his world-changing deeds, then who can?
Finally in part #9, The end of Ion! The return of Green Lantern! But just who is going to wear the Green Lantern ring? As Kyle visits the moments in the past when various heroes have been given the Green Lantern ring, he must decide exactly how he can best serve the cause of good. With appearances from Hal Jordan (now the Spectre), Alan Scott, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and others, this issue is the beginning of a whole new Green Lantern!
