Mature Readers

Most often, the master painter’s hand of Grendel-creator Matt Wagner graces only book covers, but here, with the uncensored account of Grendel-Prime’s quest to contact the spirit of the original Grendel, Hunter Rose, Wagner brings his astonishing brushwork to an entire volume’s worth of storytelling! In seven chapters, all written and lusciously painted by Wagner, the deadly cyborg Grendel-Prime pursues the past with singular purpose, even while the decadent and decaying world he has forsaken hunts him for reasons of its own. With each chapter a twisted relation to the children’s rhyme, “Rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief, doctor, lawyer, Indian chief,” this tightly crafted work is an essential piece of the Grendel canon, and a tie-in to Wagner’s popular Batman/Grendel series.

Matt Wagner wrote and painted a series of short stories as backups in Grendel Tales, starting in 1994 and collected in 1995. This hardcover collection of the story was released in March 2008. The one-shot collection, Grendel: Devil Quest, features the backup stories which ran in the various Grendel Tales mini-series: The Devil’s Hammer (1994), The Devil in Our Midst (1994), Devils and Deaths (1994), Homecoming (1994-1995) and Devil’s Choices (1995). Set 104 years after War Child, these back-up stories feature the Grendel-Khan, Jupiter Assante III, as he attempts to find Grendel-Prime in the wastelands. The cyborg, disillusioned by the decadence of the world, is attempting a bloody experiment/ritual to contact the soul of Hunter Rose, his namesake. The ritual seems to work and Grendel-Prime disappears. He later reappears some distance away, badly damaged. What happened when he vanished and why he was damaged was not explained until 1996 with the publication of the second Batman/Grendel crossover.
