Stories/Spoliers
In issue #1, “Kaleidoscope”, A man and his wife are at a barber shop, the man in the chair having his hair cut, when two men burst in and kill everyone with silenced handguns. The killers don’t see the man’s son, playing with an action figure across from the chair, until the boy screams for his father. They turn and shoot him.Steven Majorsky tosses and turns in bed as he relives his childhood trauma in the dream. As he sleeps, a caller leaves a message on his answering machine in response to an ad he placed seeking information about the death of his father 15 years ago. Later in the day, a woman is giving a tour of Elysium Towers, a new multi-million dollar condominium community, when four terrorists take over the place, killing two security guards. The tour guide asks why the terrorists are taking this action and one of them replies that they want Haywire. Elsewhere, Alex Kingman finishes with a client before going to see his psychiatrist. During the session, Alex tells the doctor about blackouts he has been experiencing lately. Back at Elysium Towers, the situation has become a media sensation. Newscasters announce that police are asking anyone with information about “Haywire” to call an 800 number. In the air, a news helicopter is hijacked by a man wearing an individual wearing a green armored suit. A terrorist is about to shoot one of the hostages when the helicopter crashes into building. The terrorists open fire on the helicopter with their machine guns. After they have expended their ammunition. The green armored individual, Haywire, leaps out of the wrecked helicopter and pummels the nearest terrorist. Haywire begins killing the terrorists. One terrorist tosses a grenade and Haywire shoots it with darts, minimizing the explosion. In the midst of the battle, the hostages get to the elevator and escape. The last surviving terrorist sets off a bomb, blowing up the entire top of the building.
Next in issue #2, “Black Dragon”, Opposing gang members are in the midst of a firefight. Haywire stands on a rooftop above them. Haywire jumps down to the street and kills the six fighting gang members. One of the gang leaders, in the back of a Cadillac with a cocaine snorting brunette, orders his driver to flee. The driver complies and Haywire leaps onto the car’s hood and shoots the driver through the windshield. The car veers wildly, rolling off a bridge and into the river, drowning the gang leader and the woman. Alex Kingman, who looks remarkably similar to Steven Majorski, wakes up late and rushes off to work. Elsewhere, in an underground high-tech facility, men discuss Project Haywire. This organization developed a special psionic suit of armor. After developing the armor they learned that only a certain type of highly repressed personality could use the armor to its maximum potential. So they held auditions. Once they found the right person, a drifter, they began running tests with the armor. During one of the tests, the man wearing the armor went berserk and raged his way out of the building. Now the organization is trying to recover the armor. At a the diner where his girlfriend Marlene works, Steven eats a meal free, compliments of Marlene. Back at the shadowy organization, a group of men meet and discuss how they are going to catch Haywire. They have procured the services of Japanese assassins. Later, Alex Kingman and his girlfriend Caroline take a cab from dinner to a press conference that Alex has to attend as part of his job. At the press conference, prosecuting attorney Mr. Biersten is beheaded by an arrow. On a nearby rooftop, a Black Dragon assassin stands, bow in hand. Haywire arrives and attacks. The assassin uses a weighted chain to bind Haywire, who easily snaps the chain. During the ensuing battle, the roof caves in and the fight is carried indoors. Haywire manages to kill the assassin by snapping his sword and jamming the sharp end in his eye and through his brain.
Next in issue #3, “Nightlash”, At night, Haywire is on a street corner, watching a news report about Haywire in a store display window. He is propositioned by a couple of hookers and turns away, heading down the street. In an apartment above him, a man begins beating his wife. Haywire appears in the apartment and begins beating up the husband. The wife calls the special number that has been flashing on television to call if sighting Haywire. She finds out there is no reward and hangs up the phone. At a mansion, a drug deal is going down. Nightlash arrives and tells her employer that police are on the way. The drug dealers begin their escape and Nightlash confronts the cops, taking out a helicopter by wrapping a chain around its rotor. Later, at Alex Kingman’s home, a security service man shows Kingman how the cameras he just set up in his home work. The following day, Steve meets with a police reporter who was at his father’s funeral. A truck rushes in and three thieves jump out of the truck, planning to steal some diamonds. Haywire arrives, picks up the truck and throws it at the thieves. One of the thieves presses a button, calling for backup. Haywire kills the thieves. As night falls, Nightlash arrives. She is the backup. Wielding a laserized whip, she begins fighting Haywire. After taking a few lumps, Nightlash tosses a smoke grenade and escapes. The next morning, Alex Kingman awakens with fresh scars on his back, as though he had been whipped.
Next in issue #4, “Recognitions”, Two men rappel down from an aircraft to the roof of Steven Majorski’s apartment building. They head down the stairs to Majorski’s floor and use a locator beacon to home in on his location at his apartment. They pull out their guns and shoot up the door, gaining entry. Majorski hurls a barber pole lamp at the two men and it is shot out of the air. One of the men backhands Majorski against the wall and in a daze, he psionically calls his armor, transforming into Haywire. Haywire follows the two men to the roof and takes out their aircraft, killing everyone aboard. Marlene arrives at the apartment and asks Majorski what happened. He can’t remember and tells her so. In Dr. Reisman’s office, Alex Kingman tells the doctor how he installed cameras in his home. He then tells the doctor that he woke up exhausted one morning and checked the cameras to see himself getting out of bed, dressing and leaving the apartment in the middle of the night. Alex tells the doctor how his girlfriend spotted the cameras and left him. The doctor catches Alex calling his girlfriend Marlene instead of Caroline and asks him about it. Alex claims he doesn’t know a Marlene. Back at the secret organization’s headquarters, new psionic armor has been developed. Men are being trained with it to defeat Haywire. That night at the city morgue, three ninjas break in and make off with the body of the ninja that assassinated a prosecuting attorney. Elsewhere, on the street, Alex Kingman is recognized by Marlene, who thinks he is Steven Majorski. Later, back at the secret organization’s headquarters, a couple scientists turn on a ultrasonic transmitter designed to emit a frequency only Haywire can hear. The idea is to lure Haywire to the transmitter. Haywire follows the signal to a rooftop bearing three men wearing the improved psionic armor. Haywire destroys the transmitter and attacks the armored men. Haywire kills two of them and tears off the third’s arm. The one-armed man ignites his flight pack and escapes, knocking Haywire off the building.
Next in issue #5, “Graveyard Shift”, Haywire is in the underground subway tunnels. Haywire beats up a couple punks who are messing with a homeless man. One of the punks gets caught on one of the rails and is killed by an oncoming train. Later, Alex Kingman is at Dr. Reisman’s office and is being put under hypnosis. Reisman snaps his fingers and Steven Majorski’s personality comes to the forefront of Alex Kingman’s psyche. Confused and enraged, Majorski calls his psionic armor, transforming into Haywire. Haywire smashes the doctor’s desk. Haywire leaps through the wall of the building, escaping. In New York harbor, a drug shipment is arriving by ship. The shipment is guarded by several men wearing psionic armor. Having learned about the shipment from one of the subway punks, Haywire claws his way up the side of the ship, boarding it. Halfway up the ship, Haywire rips open the hull, revealing two armored men playing cards. They immediately begin fighting and one of the armored men knocks Haywire far away. Haywire fires a missile, blowing up the entire ship and killing all aboard except one armored man who swears vengeance. Haywire recognizes the armor as the man flies away. Later, the armored man crashes a game show and on camera, demands that Haywire meet him at the Statue of Liberty at a specified time. The time comes and Haywire is there. The armored Central American pins Haywire’s arms to his sides by squeezing a tire over his body. Then he tosses Haywire into a trash compactor. It is then that Combine soldiers arrive and chase off the Central American.
Next in issue #6, “Surgical Removal”, A helicopter brings Haywire to the Combine headquarters in Silicon Valley, California. A man explains to the leader of the Combine how Steven Majorski’s Haywire armor teleported away after he lost consciousness and leads the man to the stasis chamber where they are keeping Majorski, whose identity they do not know. The leader of the Combine looks at Majorski and recognizes him as his son. Majorsky awakens and is shocked with an electro-probe, causing him to become enraged and call his armor. As soon as the armor assembles, the stasis field is powered up and mechanical arms remove the armor, piece by piece. After removing the armor, doctors begin surgery to remove the chip in Majorsky’s head that allows him to call the armor. The doctor’s fail to administer anaesthesia and awaken Majorsky. He calls the armor, steals a flight module and escapes. In Japan, the Black Dragon ninja clan holds a funereal service for the ninja Haywire killed. Then the dead ninja’s sister is charged with killing Haywire in revenge. Back in California, five men in psionic armor are chasing Haywire through the city. Haywire kills them all, turning a firefighter into a paraplegic in the process.
Next in issue #7, “White Lotus”, Stowed away on a train, Steven Majorsky dreams of how he infiltrated the Combine to prove his dead father’s innocence, donned the psionic armor and began doing tests in the armor at the facility. In the middle of a test, he looked up, saw his father was the director of the Combine and went crazy, breaking out of the facility. Majorsky wakes up to find two hobos in the train car with him, rifling through his wallet. Majorsky transforms into Haywire and kills the hobos, leaving the train. In New York, the White Lotus, a ninja from the Black Dragon clan, has arrived in New York. That night, she goes on patrol, looking for Haywire. That night, Steven Majorsky is on the street with his girlfriend, Marlene, when they are confronted by three Combine soldiers. The soldiers kill Marlene and Majorsky transforms into Haywire. As he makes short work of the soldiers, the White Lotus spots him and flies to where he is. The two fight and White Lotus realizes she is not well enough prepared to kill Haywire. As a result, she retreats. In a wheelchair at his apartment, former fireman Ken Marshall watches a newscast about how he received a citation for bravery.
Next in issue #8, “Past Lives”Alex Kingman attends Marlene Isles’ funeral. As he bows his head, the tranquilizer dart meant for him finds the priest’s neck instead. As the priest faints, Kingman looks up and sees a couple Combine soldiers. He runs behind a mausoleum, transforms into Haywire and lifts the mausoleum from the ground, tossing it atop the two soldiers. Later, Alex Kingman meets with White Lotus in her civilian guise for dinner. Elsewhere, Ken Marshall throws darts at a picture of Haywire. He receives a phone call from his brother in law, asking to meet. Elsewhere, Nightlash arrives in a truck stop bar and beats up a group of patrons. Later, Caroline, aka Nightlash, is taking a bath when she receives a call from Alex Kingman. She learns that he is seeing a Japanese woman (White Lotus) and jealous, hangs up the phone with great force. Elsewhere, White Lotus attacks Combine headquarters, killing several officers before escaping. She returns to her apartment to await Alex Kingman. While she is waiting, in a nightie, Nightlash arrives and begins fighting her. Alex arrives at the apartment and Nightlash knocks him out. The two women continue fighting until security arrives and Nightlash escapes by jumping out the window. Ken’s brother in law arrives at Ken’s apartment with three throwing stars in his back and a briefcase. As Ken answers the door, his brother in law falls over dead.
Next in issue #9, “Burials and Exhumations”, Alex Kingman is buying some wine at a liquor store when some masked men arrive and hold the place up. Kingman transforms into Haywire and kills the robbers, wrecking the store. Three armed men and the psionic armored Central American calling himself El Scorpio break into a bank. They escape with money from the bank. Alex Kingman is at his apartment, when White Lotus arrives in her civilian garb. Kingman lets her in and she reveals to him that she is White Lotus. She tells him how she knows he is Haywire and that she is a ninja assassin who has been sent to kill him. Yet, now she is in love with him and cannot do so. Meanwhile, an Atlantic City casino is held up by El Scorpio and his goons. Kingman hears about it on a police radio and transforms to Haywire. Haywire, apparently a separate personality, recognizes White Lotus and backhands her. He then takes off for the casino. Haywire begins fighting El Scorpio and his goons and White Lotus arrives shortly to help. Haywire kills El Scorpio and his goons and White Lotus manages to get arrested by police. Back at Ken Marshall’s place, he opens the briefcase his brother in law was carrying to reveal psionic armor.
Next in issue #10, “Love and Death”, Haywire watches as White Lotus is put into a police car. Haywire frees White Lotus. In Japan, three more ninjas are dispatched to the U.S. to kill Haywire. Another personality of Alex Kingman/Steven Majorski’s steals rubies from a mansion. The Combine has tracked down Ken Marshall and wants the armor back that his brother in law gave him. Donning the armor, he kills the Combine men. Alex Kingman takes a gem he found in his pocket to a jewelry store for appraisal. The gem is on the police watch list and the jeweler reports it. When Kingman returns to the shop he is arrested.
Next in issue #11, “The Incendiary Man”, Alex Kingman is in an interrogation room with a cop. The cop gets a little rough and Kingman transforms into Haywire and escapes. Later, the thief personality is scaling a building when one of the Combine’s men shoots him with a rifle, causing him to plummet into the river below. At the White Lotus’ apartment, she is confronted by the other three ninjas from the Black Dragon clan. Steven Majorski pulls himself out of the river and heads back to the apartment to find Marlene. When he doesn’t find her, he goes to the diner where she works. When he learns Marlene is dead, the psychic trauma causes him to transform into Haywire. He trashes the diner, demolishes a building and derails a subway train. Ken Marshall sees Haywire’s rampage on TV, dons his armor and goes out to confront Haywire. As the two fight, one of the Combine’s men shoots Haywire with a weapon that causes his armor to teleport away.
Next in issue #12, “Psychogenesis”, As Steven Majorski plummets toward the ground, Ken Marshall scoops him up and flies away. At the White Lotus’ apartment, she is bound by the three Black Dragon ninjas. They tell her they will destroy Haywire and fly away. Marshall holds Majorsky hostage and tries to get him to change back to Haywire, so he can get his revenge. Majorsky tells Marshall he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Suddenly, Majorsky remembers everything and transforms into Haywire. He knocks Marshall away and flies off. White Lotus works free of her bonds and suits up. Haywire begins fighting Marshall and the three ninjas catch up with him and join the fight. White Lotus flies to Alex Kingman’s apartment and is captured by Combine men. Haywire and Marshall join forces against the ninjas and drive them off. Then Marshall is killed by three Combine soldiers wearing improved psionic armor.
Finally in issue #13, “The “Y” Factor”, Steven Majorski is held captive in a room in Combine headquarters. His father arrives and tells Majorsky how he faked his own death so he could keep his dealings as Combine director secret. He tries to get the location of the armor from his son, but Steven has no memory of where the armor is located. After the director leaves the room, he meets with his men who tell him that according to their equipment, Steven is telling the truth. The director orders them to cut out Steven’s brain and determine how it works so they can get the maximum potential out of their psionic armor units. At Ken Marshall’s apartment he is knocked out and taken captive by two men in black. The Combine take Black Lotus into the room containing Steven. She kills the two Combine soldiers and is quickly recaptured. Steven is put under hypnosis by a Combine psychiatrist as White Lotus fights free of her captors. They kill her and Steven changes to Haywire, killing all the Combine soldiers. The room’s automated defenses roar to life and Haywire rips open the floor and dives through it. He breaks his way down through several levels, putting himself on a collision course with the headquarters’ nuclear generator, destroying the entire building. In Wichita, at a YMCA, three kids break into several of the lockers. In one of the lockers they find Haywire’s psionic armor.
