John Carter was an Earthman who ventured into a cave one day and saw a strange light. When the light touched him, his body seemed split into two, with one body staying behind on Earth, and another being transported to Mars. There he discovered strange races, including green, four-armed giants and ancient humanoid warriors. Carter rose to become a prince on this world, leading a swashbuckling life of space adventure. He also found friendship in the alien known as Tars Tarkas, and true love in the beautiful Dejah Thoris.
John Carter, Warlord of Mars was Edgar Rice Burroughs’ first hero, predating his work on Korak and Tarzan. Carter made his comics debut in 1939’s The Funnies #30. It appeared sporadically under several different publishers, including a 1972 run in DC’s Weird Worlds. Marvel’s version began in 1977, and presented Carter’s sword and fantasy adventures until issue #28 in 1979.
Annual #1 is loosely based on a chapter from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Llana of Gathol, (the tenth novel in his famous Barsoom series), “The Ancient Dead,” originally “The City of Mummies,” was the last to be published during Burroughs’ lifetime. Annual #2 partly adapts Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “The Mastermind of Mars”,
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “When Walk the Ancient Dead”, The story opens with John Carter cruising in a space flier over the Martian terrain. While reminiscing on Barsoom and his experiences there, he discovers and rescues Pan Dan Chee from an army of Tharks.
John Carter follows Pan Dan Chee into the city of Horz and is captured and sentenced to death by the men of the city. His crime? Strangers are not allowed into Horz and John Carter has clearly violated their law. The King of Horz explains the rich history of their city and its implications on his execution.
John Carter is given an additional day before the execution is to be carried out. Pan Dan Chee takes Carter to a special place and shows him the tombs of the ancient citizens of Horz. Among the tombs a secret passageway is found and the two men find their way to an old man who deceives and captures them. A new battle ensues, but are the ancient foes real or a figment of their imagination?
Next in issue #2, “Gale”, John Carter, Dejah Thoris and Tars Tarkas board a flagship to perform an inspection, but a huge gale nearly blows Carter into the eye of the storm. John Carter regains consciousness and sees strange headless human slaves being ruled by an elite class of citizens. In the wilderness, Carter meets a headless creature that has been given a head. A great white ape grabs John Carter and intends to eat him.
The strange creature and great white ape have an extended conversation with John Carter, describing the origin of their condition. John Carter, the strange creature and the great white ape board a flier and stage a rescue of Dejah Thoris and Tars Tarkas. A bizarre talking and walking head attempts to take over Barsoom and destroy John Carter. Can Carter defeat him and rescue Dejah Thoris?
Finally in issue #3, “Amazons of Mars”, Always the southern gentleman, John Carter fights to defend his new female friends from a horde of flying vampire creatures. On the brink of disaster, a door is opened and Carter enters a temple room of worship where scores of Amazonian women worship an idol surrounded by a pool of molten lava. John Carter is led to the altar where he is tied down and about to be offered as a sacrifice.
Meanwhile, Dejah Thoris teams up with Tars Tarkas to rescue her husband from the Amazonians. During the attempted rescue a flaming apparition appears in the alter, threatening to destroy everyone. Can Tars Tarkas and Dejah Thoris deliver deliver John Carter in time?
