Hellblazer: Hard Time                   Trade Paperback
Writer: Brian Azzarello
Artist: Richard Corben
Colorist: James Sinclair
Letterer: Clem Robins
Editors: Axel Alonso & Michael Wright
Cover by: Tim Bradstreet

John Constantine has lost his freedom and must adapt to life behind bars. Sentenced to a maximum-security penitentiary, the Hellblazer soon learns that there is a whole different set of rules to live and die by within the prison walls. But for a man that is used to making the rules, Constantine quickly realizes that to become king of this castle he will have to fight his way up the ladder through ruthless gangs, brutal guards, and finally to the prison’s overlord. Then it will be time for everyone to learn his rules.

Story/Spoilers
In part #1, John Constantine is in a new kind of hell: a maximum-security penitentiary. Throughout his sordid career, not much has scared Constantine. As long as he’s had his smokes and his freedom, he’s always been in control. But what happens when those things are taken away from him? Stripped of his trademark trench coat, his pack of Silk Cuts, and the safety net of his personal connections, Constantine must adapt to an environment unlike any other he’s experienced – a hard place governed by even harder men, where weakness is rewarded by death…or worse. For Constantine, always used to being the baddest of the bad, survival will require learning a whole new set of rules as he navigates a treacherous maze of ruthless gangs, brutal guards and, eventually, the prison’s formidable overlord. And once his education is complete, then Constantine can begin to teach others the rules of his game. And that’s when things start to get really interesting…

Next in part #2, Word is spreading about the new guy and his run-ins with the stone-cold crews that populate the maximum-security prison. Seems everyone’s learning the hard way that there’s much more to “England” than meets the eye. Everyone, that is, other than Stark, a cold- blooded lifer and boss of the nastiest gang in the cellblock. Over a hand of poker John Constantine finds that the ante may be his life.

Next in part #3, Cold-blooded lifer Stark is the nastiest boss in the cellblock. When compelling evidence points to a snitch on the block – perhaps someone in Stark’s own inner circle ? prison life is about to take a turn for the worst. And while John Constantine undertakes his own search for the culprit, he uncovers a scheme more devious than even he could imagine.

Next in part #4, While stewing in “the hole,” Constantine is visited by the ghosts of his past. And if old friends aren’t enough to push John over the edge, he’s also trapped without his favorite companions: his trusty pack of smokes. While John is gripped in the throes of a violent nicotine fit, the rest of the prison’s general population begins to feel his pain…with terrible results.

Finally in part #5, Chaos ensues as the inmates take over the prison, with John Constantine reigning as King. When an FBI agent enters the fray, will he have what it takes to take “England” down for good?
