A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…
Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. The film series began with Star Wars, released on May 25, 1977. This was followed by two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, released on May 21, 1980, and Return of the Jedi, released on May 25, 1983. Then more than two decades after the release of the original film, the series continued with a prequel trilogy; consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released on May 19, 1999; Episode II: Attack of the Clones, released on May 16, 2002; Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released on May 19, 2005; and finally the epic saga concluded with Star Wars: The Force Awakens released on December 18, 2015; Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released on December 18, 2017. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, released on December 18, 2017. And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released on December 20, 2019.
Marvel Comics proudly presents a prequel comic adaptation of Star Wars: Episode VII, The Force Awakens. Star Wars: Shattered Empire is a four-part Star Wars comic book miniseries, written by Greg Rucka and penciled by Marco Checchetto, set between Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. The series is part of the Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens multimedia program.
Now… a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Shattered Empire! Emperor Palpatine’s twenty-year reign of terror came to an abrupt and fiery end in the skies above the forest moon of Endor. A decisive victory for the Rebel Alliance, to be sure, but even with the loss of its leadership, the Empire’s Moffs and regional governors retained their hold on important systems from the Core to the Outer Rim, thanks to the might of the Imperial Starfleet. Now, with a power vacuum atop the Empire, those Moffs will jockey for position and control, and the heroes of the Rebel Alliance will soon discover that a wounded and fractious Empire may be more dangerous than any threat they faced before!
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, It is the final moments of the Battle Of Endor. Amidst the stars about the Forest Moon, Rebel forces have engaged the evil Galactic Empire in a desperate, final confrontation, hoping to end the tyrannical rule of Emperor Palpatine and bring peace to a wearied and battered galaxy. But the Rebel Fleet has fallen into a trap. The second Death Star is fully operational, and on Endor’s moon, the energy shield protecting it still stands. What was to be a moment of triumph now teeters on the brink of disaster. Now, rebel pilots have engaged Imperial forces in furious dogfights, frantically trying to protect the Rebellion’s capital ships, and to buy enough time to rescue victory from the jaws of defeat…
Next in issue #2, The Rebel Alliance has succeeded in the impossible: The second Death Star has been destroyed. Emperor Palpatine is dead. The victory so many fought and died for has been achieved. While word of the rebel triumph has spread in some quarters, in others there remains only the sanctioned newsfeeds of the Empire, an unending stream of propaganda and terror that has been a way of life for as long as many can remember. For the rebels, wearied and exhausted by their long struggle, it is becoming clear that the war is not yet over. Scattered Imperial Forces persist, as committed as ever to upholding the legacy of darkness its Emperor brought to the galaxy…
Next in issue #3, The Emperor is dead, as is his most fearsome agent, Darth Vader. Yet scattered Imperial forces remain intact, loyal to the Galactic Empire, still willing and able to do the bidding of its master. Lieutenant Shara Bey and her husband, Sergeant Kes Dameron, have been with the Rebel Alliance since before the Battle of Hoth. Their time together has been rare and precious, and they once more find themselves separated by duty. Under the command of General Han Solo, Dameron has been deployed with his commando group, the Pathfinders, in ongoing combat operations against the shattered Empire. Meanwhile Shara Bey has been assigned a light duty, acting as pilot and escort for Princess Leia Organa in an attempt to find allies for the fledgling New Republic. It is this that has brought Bey and Organa to NABOO, the Emperor’s homeworld. They are about to discover precisely how far Palpatine will go to protect his secrets…
Finally in issue #4, The Battle of Endor is now three months in the past. Word of the Rebel Alliance victory and the death of Emperor Palpatine continues to spread slowly throughout the galaxy, its progress impaired by the endless propaganda of the Galactic Empire. Nonetheless, in many quarters, the Empire continues exactly as it did before, and the war continues to rage. A contingency plan known as Operation: Cinder has been activated by the Emperor’s death to exact vengeance against his enemies, as well as to preserve the secrets, treasures, and knowledge of the Sith Lord. Countless worlds throughout the Outer Rim have suffered devastating attacks as Imperial remnants hurry to fulfill their late master’s will. The elation of the rebel victory is now just a fading memory, lost in the wake of nonstop combat operations against the Imperial remnants. For many of the rebels, the dream of laying down their arms and living in peace seems further away than the elation of victory promised…
