A thrilling adaptation of one of Robert E. Howard’s most beloved Conan stories!
Based on Robert E. Howard’s first Conan story.
“The Phoenix on the Sword” is one of the original short stories about Conan the Cimmerian, written by Robert E. Howard and was first published in Weird Tales magazine December 1932. The tale, in which Howard created the character of Conan, was a rewrite of the unpublished Kull story, “By This Axe I Rule!” with long passages being identical. The Conan version of the story was republished in the collections King Conan (Gnome Press, 1953) and Conan the Usurper (Lancer Books, 1967).
“The Phoenix on the Sword” begins with a middle-aged Conan of Cimmeria attempting to govern the turbulent kingdom of Aquilonia and details Conan foiling a nefarious plot to unseat him as king of Aquilonia. Look for… The return of Conan’s greatest foe – Thoth-Amon!
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Daggers at my Back”, First hailing Conan as a liberator after he annihilated Aquilonia’s foes on the battlefield, common folk and politicians alike now rally to unseat the Cimmerian from his stolen throne. Conspirators plot to kill King Conan and take the crown for themselves, but their schemes pale in comparison to a terror waiting quietly in the wings-Thoth-Amon, an enemy who has haunted Conan his whole adult life and whose wicked aspirations dwarf those of maneuvering politicians!
Next in issue #2, “A Gathering of Vultures”, Conspirators move in the shadows as King Conan’s troops move to quell a Pictish uprising, leaving the newly crowned king exposed to the machinations of four influential traitors who seek to wrest the crown from Conan’s lifeless brow! But something even deadlier moves silently in the night, answering the call of the ancient serpent god Set. A faithful servant of darkness, the wizard Thoth-Amon toils in Aquilonia and prays for a rebirth of power that will unleash untold evils!
Next in issue #3, “A Servant for my Hate”, King Conan has built his empire by brawn and by blade, but there are dangers that lurk in the shadows of his throne that cannot be slain by the Cimmerian’s steel. Assassins are at his chamber door, and Thoth-Amon-back to the height of his power-is summoning fearsome fiends from the fiery pit! If he is to survive the night, Conan will need to enlist the aid of the gods!
Finally, in issue #4, “Mists of Blood”, The Rebel Four spring their trap on King Conan, sending assassins to slay the barbarian monarch in his sleep! After waking from a strange vision, Conan has his back up against a wall and his enemies in front of him-right where he wants them. If these traitors want his crown, they’ll have to take it! But even if Conan survives the assassination attempt, the evil wizard Thoth-Amon is back at full power and waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike and take the throne for himself!
