“The Scarlet Citadel” is one of the original short stories starring the fictional sword and sorcery hero Conan the Cimmerian, written by American author Robert E. Howard and first published in Weird Tales magazine circa January 1933. It is set in the pseudo-historical Hyborian Age and concerns a middle-aged Conan battling rival kingdoms, being captured through treachery and escaping from an eldritch dungeon via unexpected aid. The story includes Tsotha-lanti who is an evil wizard whose sorcerous arts help ensnare King Conan.

After King Conan of Aquilonia’s army has been slain, he is taken prisoner and put into the Kothian dungeon at Khorshemish He rescues a sorcerer, Pelias and escapes, only to find that the capital Tarantia has been taken over by a rival in his absence, and the Kothian army is set to destroy another city…

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, Even though he’s been beaten nearly to death, chained to a wall, and locked away deep within Tsotha’s fortress, Conan is by no means out of commission…

Next in issue #2, While the foes and betrayers who stripped him of his crown celebrate their acquisition of Aquilonia, Conan plans his escape. However, an additional, seemingly insignificant foe from Conan’s past stalks Tsotha’s horrific dungeons waiting for a chance to kill the legendary barbarian.

Next in issue #3, Conan goes against his ingrained barbarian instincts and sides with a strange wizard in order to topple those who ensnared them both in the horrific dungeons beneath the Scarlet Citadel

Finally in issue #4, Conan races to Aquilonia to regain his throne with the aid of Pelias the Wizard!
