Kolchak: The Night Stalker is an American television series that aired on ABC during the 1974–1975 season. Kolchak: The Night Stalker was created by Jeff Rice. It featured a fictional Chicago newspaper reporter – Carl Kolchak, played by Darren McGavin – who investigated mysterious crimes with unlikely causes, particularly those that law enforcement authorities would not follow up. These often involved the supernatural or science fiction, including fantastic creatures. The series was preceded by two television movies, The Night Stalker (1972) and The Night Strangler (1973). Although the series lasted only a single season, it garnered a world-wide fan following and is considered a cult classic in horror television. Subsequent novels and comic books later followed. And it later influenced the creation of the X-Files, which is in the same vein as Kolchak: The Night Stalker.
Now, Moonstone continues the creepy horror anthology that is: “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” in various comic book related projects. Cue the “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” intro theme music and be prepared to get totally spooked out in… Kolchak: The Night Stalker – Eve of Terror! Another Kolchak TV script that was never produced!
“Eve of Terror,” an unfilmed episode that underwent multiple redrafts through March of 1975, is credited primarily to Stephen Lord (“Demon in Lace”) and Michael Kozoll (“Demon in Lace” and “The Knightly Murders”). Here The Night Stalker tackles the classic-monster Jekyll & Hyde theme, with a distaff twist during a period when network executives still thought “women’s liberation” was a buzzword. Per formula, a violent murder is set up for the show’s teaser, beginning with Kolchak talking into his trusty tape recorder, above. The story is summed up by one of Kolchak’s lines in the episode: “What if I told you that a deranged feminist murdered a Casanova lab technician, a sex goddess, and her purveyor?”
Story/Spoilers
Kolchak is hot on the story of a scientist who is mysteriously, and quite violently, murdered. He discovers that the laboratory, & the shadowy figures that fund its experiments, have much to hide. But when a seemingly unrelated murder takes place with Kolchak as its only witness, no power on earth than can stop our man from uncovering the horrible truths.
