Kolchak: The Night Stalker is an American television series that aired on ABC during the 1974 – 1975 season. Kolchak: The Night Stalker was created by Jeff Rice. It featured a fictional Chicago newspaper reporter – Carl Kolchak, played by Darren McGavin – who investigated mysterious crimes with unlikely causes, particularly those that law enforcement authorities would not follow up. These often involved the supernatural or science fiction, including fantastic creatures. The series was preceded by two television movies, The Night Stalker (1972) and The Night Strangler (1973). Although the series lasted only a single season, it garnered a world-wide fan following and is considered a cult classic in horror television. Subsequent novels and comic books later followed. And it later influenced the creation of the X-Files, which is in the same vein as Kolchak: The Night Stalker.

Now, Moonstone continues the creepy horror anthology that is: “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” in various comic book related projects. Cue the “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” intro theme music and be prepared to get totally spooked out in… Kolchak Tales: The Frankenstein Agenda! Sent to the Oregon woods to do a story on a Native American celebration, Kolchak: The Nightstalker finds himself neck deep in a military conspiracy. An experiment to adapt mankind for space has gone horribly wrong and produced a monster with a very human soul.

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, The forests of western Oregon hold a secret…something much more than its typical Sasquatch sightings. But whatever it is that’s stalking the woods, the military is very interested in keeping it quiet. Well, we all know just how quiet a reporter Carl Kolchak is about things like a deformed, hulking creature that hides in the shadows.

When Kolchak heads for Central Oregon to investigate reports of strange lights in the sky and sightings of the legendary Sasquatch, he finds an unusually large military presence in the area. Ignoring their order to turn back, Karl sneaks into the woods and finds the disembowelled corpse of a bear; he then runs into Colonel Braxton, an unfriendly soldier who places a watch on the snooping reporter. Karl soon arrives in the town of Log Run, where he hands over his assignment to student Roy Two Clouds in order to give himself the time to continue his investigations. That night, Kolchak joins the local sheriff at the house of Sophie Newman, a recently abducted widow. Following the trail into the dark wood, Karl comes face to face with a walking nightmare…

Next in issue #2, The military wants very much to contain – and eliminate – a situation up in the Oregon woods. And Carl Kolchak is right in the middle! But when that ‘situation’ is a creature genetically engineered for deep-space survival of their own creation, what other drastic measures, and creations, are they willing to unleash to silence everyone once and for all?

Held hostage by a bizarre, hulking monster, Kolchak learns from his fellow prisoner, widow Sophie Newman, that the creature is in fact her son, John. It seems that that John had recently volunteered for a secret project being conducted at the nearby army base, a project that somehow led to his transformation into the mute creature now standing before them. Vowing to uncover the truth behind John’s metamorphosis, Kolchak’s search leads him to Doctor Miles Stewart, a terrified scientist now living in fear from the repercussions of creating a new form of life for the colonisation of alien planets…

Finally in issue #3, Kolchak has learned the terrible secret behind this grotesquely mutated creature – this betrayed army soldier, this twisted shell of a man. But even as an immoral military plays God, Kolchak himself must win a wrestling match with his own morals when the means to destroy the abomination is put into his hands. And a former soldier’s mother waits for him to make his choice!

Attacked by four hideously mutated dogs, Kolchak is saved by the misshaped creature that was once John Newman. When Carl and John’s mother, Sophie, report the rogue operation taking place at the nearby military base to Sheriff Jeff Carter, the officer asks the reporter to sneak into Fort Dean to gather further information. However, on entering the premises Kolchak is immediately captured by Colonel Braxton and taken to a laboratory where creatures from the depths of hell are being created for use on the battlefield…
